Pope in Kazakhstan: “Man is the way for all the religions.”The Pope completed his visit to Kazakhstan with a renewed emphasis on the central theme of his 38th apostolic journey: peace. Shortly before, he signed the Final Declaration upon the conclusion of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions “The path of interreligious dialogue is a shared path to peace and for peace; as such, it is necessary and irrevocable”, the Pope remarked in his last speech in Kazakhstan, delivered at the Palace of Independence in Nur-Sultan, following the reading of the Final Declaration and conclusion of the...

Back in the early 1990s, Nathaniel Landau was a young virologist just starting his career in HIV research. But he and his colleagues were already on the verge of a landmark breakthrough. Several labs around the world were hot on his team's tail."We were sleeping in the lab, just to keep the work going day and night because there were many labs all racing against each other," Landau says. "Of course, we wanted to be the first to do it. We were totally stressed out."Other scientists had identified groups of people who appeared to be completely resistant to HIV. "People...

Consistent use of CPAP treatment in patients with known heart disease and newly diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea is associated with a lower likelihood of rehospitalization, according to a study. Results show that the risk of 30-day hospital readmission among those with cardiovascular disease and high adherence to CPAP for sleep apnea was 60% lower relative to those with low adherence to CPAP. The results highlight the importance of screening for and treating obstructive sleep apnea among individuals with cardiovascular disease, the authors wrote. Nearly 30 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea, a chronic disease that involves repeated...

There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives (not counting nonvoting seats for D.C. and some U.S. possessions) and all of them are up for election in November. Right now, the Democrats control the House with 219 Democrats versus 211 Republicans (there are five vacancies). It takes 218 votes to control the House. This means if the Republicans hold the seats they have and pick up just seven seats from Democrats, they will control the House. Will this happen? The 2022 election cycle is more challenging to predict than usual because it’s the first election since the 2020 Census that...

Click here to see ISW’s interactive map of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This map is updated daily alongside the static maps present in this report. The Kremlin acknowledged its defeat in Kharkiv Oblast, the first time Moscow has openly recognized a defeat since the start of the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin officials and state media propagandists are extensively discussing the reasons for the Russian defeat in Kharkiv Oblast, a marked change from their previous pattern of reporting on exaggerated or fabricated Russian successes with limited detail.[1] The Kremlin never admitted that Russia was defeated around Kyiv or,...

The Danish government is filled with ghoulish inhumane death worshippers.Either that or they have decided that paying attention to real science and ignoring the COVID death cult is a better public health strategy than kowtowing to the terminally paranoid or narcissistic power mad elves like Anthony Fauci. In a move that will no doubt be completely ignored by the MSM and the COVID cultists, the Danish government will not even offer the COVID vaccine to otherwise healthy people under 50. Their explanation from the COVID-19 vaccination website:The purpose of the vaccination programme is to prevent severe illness, hospitalisation and death. Therefore,...

Since yesterday afternoon the arrival of about 50 migrants, mostly of them originally from Venezuela, in Martha’s Vineyard has been one of the biggest stories in the country. The sentiment on the left has been entirely predictable. DeSantis has been vilified for “flinging” these poor migrants at one of the nicest resorts in the United States.Deeply deeply sick and dehumanizing to fling human beings somewhere vindictively.— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 15, 2022Some on the left are suggesting the Gov. may have committed a crime. The Department of Justice needs to investigate Governor DeSantis for using fraud and deception to lure people...

There's a long-established link between a high-fat, high-sugar diet and fatty liver disease, which can lead to life-threatening conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Now, new research adds some detail and dimension to this picture. The lab study is the first-ever to focus on how different amounts of cholesterol as part of a diet high in fat and sugar affect fatty liver disease progression. Modeling the disease in mice, the investigators demonstrated that high cholesterol intake can make fatty liver disease worse—driving inflammation and scarring—and that, importantly, scar tissue can persist even after switching to a diet low in...

Pieper Lewis, an Iowa teenager, has already lived through the nightmare of experiencing multiple sexual assaults when she was captured as a human trafficking victim two years ago by nasty, evil men when she was only 15. That nightmare swiftly ended when she fought back, stabbing her attacker numerous times after yet another sexual assault. Most decent people would cheer on her extreme bravery, but that wasn’t the case in the Iowa court system, as a judge punished her with serious charges for ultimately saving her own life. Adding insult to injury, the judge ordered her to pay $150,000 to...

It saddens many of us that the FBI, unfortunately, has become more akin to the KGB than the independent and efficient arm of the Department of Justice it was intended to be. To the surprise and horror of the American people, among it’s many failures, the FBI has repeatedly failed to protect Americans (remember 9/11) and the U.S. Constitution.

Mortgage rates when President Joe Biden took office? 2.65 percent. Today? 6.28 percent. On Tuesday, Biden held a weird celebration of his “Inflation Reduction Act” on the lawn of the White House. Why was it weird? Because at the very same time as Democrats were applauding themselves, the U.S. Labor Department was releasing figures that showed an “unexpected” rise in inflation, with the cost of rent, food, and other basic necessities continuing to skyrocket. Now we learn that mortgage rates have climbed above six percent for the first time since 2008. Wonder what kind of party Biden has planned for this milestone?30-Year...

We’ve been saying the momentum seems to be going in the Republicans’ direction when it comes to the Senate. We’ve been looking at eight races that Decision Desk has said that the race for the Senate may turn on: Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Virtually all of them seem to have the Republicans up or have the race moving in a favorable direction. Now, Wisconsin has just moved in the Republican direction as well.Democrat Mandela Barnes had been up by more than 7 points in polling against Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) in August. Admittedly, that...

The Corinth Canal is a waterway that crosses the narrow isthmus of Corinth to link the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf...It is believed that Periander, the tyrant of Corinth (602 BC), was the first to conceive of the idea of digging the Corinth Canal. As the project was too complicated given the limited technical capabilities of the times, Periander constructed the diolkós, a stone road which allowed ships to be transferred on wheeled platforms.Later on, Macedonian king Dimitrios Poliorkitis (c. 300 BC) tried to dig the canal, but his team of engineers warned him that if a connection...

Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) called parents at school board meetings “MAGA Republicans” and compared them to those who entered the U.S. Capitol on January 6. “January 6 2021, will never be forgotten, an infamous day in American history. MAGA Republicans descended upon the Capitol, engaged in an insurrection,” Johnson said at a House Judiciary Committee meeting on Wednesday.

It started with Crimea and it will end with Crimea. The grinding war of attrition is into its seventh month with no peace settlement on the horizon. Before the invasion, the issue of Crimea did not top the international agenda. It was not even included in the infamous Minsk Accords and the work of the Trilateral Contact Group, forcing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to look for new formats to voice the Crimea case loud and clear. In turn, Putin legitimised the illegal annexation through false historical narratives, nurturing it with recognition from his authoritarian friends. International actors expressed their traditional concern...

President Joe Biden on Thursday expressed his frustration with Republican governors sending migrants from the Southern border to Democrat-run cities, calling their actions “Un-American.” “Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props,” Biden said. “What they’re doing is simply wrong. It’s un-American. It’s reckless”

In the midst of their three-night run at the Masonic in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday night, Pavement became the band they were destined to be. They were no longer content to generate the most noise on stage, choosing instead to turn their instruments down a notch so that their sonic cohesion could flourish. (Guitarist Scott Kannberg has credited Wilco for this adaptation.) A surprise sixth member, keyboardist and percussionist Rebecca Clay Cole, was added to this tour, and her textural additions allowed the band to finally perform certain cuts that could never survive outside the studio. For perhaps the...

Just off Highway 101 North on route to Rohnert Park is an unassuming storefront attached to a Shell gas station. The building is home to Vinoma restaurant, where a selection of handmade savory and sweet empanadas are prepared by the hundreds. If you don’t pull over, you might miss out on one of the best Bay Area restaurants to eat at right now. I found myself at Vinoma on a recent drive to Sonoma County. The road to Rohnert Park isn’t exactly a quick trip from my East Bay home, but when I heard that an Argentinian restaurant attached to...

President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that his administration would push to end the immunity Big Tech platforms enjoy for third-party content, an effort Republicans previously backed. "I'm calling on Congress to get rid of special immunity for social media companies and impose much stronger transparency requirements on all of them," the president said, per the New York Post. Specifically, he called for the repeal of Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, echoing similar demands from Republicans in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, amid the outcry over tech company censorship of explosive allegations against Hunter Biden....
