Morning show host Jenna Bush Hager said Monday she had a "lovely" dinner with then-Prince Charles the night before Queen Elizabeth II died, adding that she thought that the timing of his mother’s passing was likely a "surprise" to him. "It was a lovely meal," Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, said on her show "Today with Hoda & Jenna." The journalist had flown to Scotland to meet with Camilla, then-Duchess of Cornwall, to discuss her book club. Moscow for the first time openly recognizes a defeat since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022. Kremlin officials and state media propagandists are extensively discussing the reasons for the Russian defeat in Kharkiv Oblast, informs the Institute for the Study of War. The Kremlin never admitted that Russia was defeated around Kyiv or, later, at Snake Island, framing the retreat from Kyiv as a decision to prioritize the «liberation» of Donbas and the withdrawal from Snake Island as a «gesture of goodwill». The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) originally offered a similar explanation for the Russian...

This is my vanity update on the Ukraine-Russian war. My information is primarily sourced from the many Russian accounts I follow on telegram and Scott Ritter. The Ukraine made a successful counter attack on Russia and reclaimed vast tracts of land. This attack was organized by NATO and it had Ukrainian troops who were NATO trained and equipped. In particular, the HIMARS systems provided by the Americans have been critical to helping Ukraine. My rough understanding is that these allow for longer range attacks on Russian positions. The good news for Russia is that they lost very few troops…the bad...

For as long as there have been politics there have been deals.Of course, it is illegal to trade one's vote for cash, but those with the power to dispense patronage, projects, and promotions have a unique advantage in seeking the support of those whose endorsements can tip the balance for any given issue. It is unprecedented, however, when the stakes have become so high that these kinds of backroom deals can disrupt an election or even plunge a nation into an unrecoverable cycle of debt and economic despair. That is why the "Inflation Reduction Act of 2022" that has come out of...

German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Monday she believed Germany was obliged to play a leading global role, including in the military sphere, and that the country should not be afraid of the responsibilty. “Germany’s size, its geographical situation, its economic power — in short, its clout — makes us a leading power whether or not we want to be one. Militarily as well,” she said in a keynote security address in Berlin. […] Lambrecht confirmed that Europe’s security was still guaranteed by its most important ally, the US. “But this ally has been forced to shift its main...

Ever since Vladimir Putin’s troops first crossed the Ukrainian border on February 24, there has been no shortage of Western commentators seeking to explain why Ukraine really has no choice but to offer Russia land in exchange for peace. Despite a series of Ukrainian military successes and mounting evidence that the Russian invasion has run out of steam, calls for a compromise peace continue. The self-styled foreign policy realists behind these calls tend to overlook the fact that the land they are so eager to give away is actually home to millions of Ukrainians who would face a desperately bleak...

California’s drought regulators have lost a major lawsuit that could undermine their legal authority to stop farms and cities from pulling water from rivers and streams. With California in its third punishing year of a historic drought, an appeals court ruled Monday that the State Water Resources Control Board lacks the power to interfere with so-called “senior” water rights holders and curtail their diversions of water from rivers. The case stems from orders imposed by the state board in 2015, during the previous drought, when it halted farms and cities throughout the Central Valley from taking water from the Sacramento...

A federal judge on Tuesday unsealed additional portions of an FBI affidavit laying out the basis for a search of former US President Donald Trump’s Florida home, The Associated Press reported. The latest portion that was unsealed shows that agents earlier obtained a hard drive after issuing a subpoena for surveillance footage recorded inside Mar-a-Lago. A heavily redacted version of the affidavit was made public last month, but the Justice Department requested permission to show more of it after lawyers for Trump revealed the existence of a June grand jury subpoena that sought video footage from cameras in the vicinity...
