I laughed out loud in Marks & Spencer when I found that they are now selling something called ‘Chicken Kyiv’. This is apparently just like their old ‘Chicken Kiev’, only with added propaganda. I am told that there is now also a ‘No Chicken Kyiv’ for vegans, without any actual chicken in it. Not since the wild frenzy after the death of Princess Diana have I ever met such a wave of ignorant sentiment. Nobody knows anything about Ukraine. Everyone has ferocious opinions about it. The other night I shocked a distinguished Oxford academic by informing her that the lovely,...

Explanation: Tsunamis this large don't happen on Earth. During 2006, a large solar flare from an Earth-sized sunspot produced a tsunami-type shock wave that was spectacular even for the Sun. Pictured here, the tsunami wave was captured moving out from active region AR 10930 by the Optical Solar Patrol Network (OSPAN) telescope in New Mexico, USA. The resulting shock wave, known technically as a Moreton wave, compressed and heated up gasses including hydrogen in the photosphere of the Sun, causing a momentarily brighter glow. The featured image was taken in a very specific red color emitted exclusively by hydrogen gas....

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar sent a letter to 19 financial companies that he alleges could be ‘boycotting the fossil fuel industry.’ Hegar is asking the companies, including JP Morgan and Wells Fargo, to clarify their fossil fuel investment policies and procedures, and has requested a list of any mutual funds or exchange-traded funds in their portfolios that may prohibit or limit investment in fossil fuels. It’s part of Hegar’s efforts to implement Senate Bill 13, which was passed during the 87th Regular Legislative Session. The bill does not prohibit these companies from boycotting fossil fuels, but rather...

As a song, “Ebony and Ivory” may not have aged well, but, on the May 22, 1982, episode of Saturday Night Live, the treacly Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder duet gave two of the show’s biggest stars one of their biggest hits. With the cloyingly rosy musical paean to black-white relations having come out just that March, SNL writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield knew they had the perfect Stevie Wonder for a parody sketch in Eddie Murphy. Murphy, well on his way to becoming one the biggest stars in the show’s history, did a killer Wonder, but had teased...

[Catholic Caucus] Liturgy Unites, Gaslighting Divides Guns don't kill people, people do. People are the source of division, not the things they use to bring about violence. The voice is one of the most beautiful gifts given to men, and yet men use their voices all too frequently in sinful ways to divide and to hate. This is not the fault of the voice but of the man or woman who uses it for unholy purposes. So, intentions are key in uncovering in any situation what is the cause of division, if indeed there subsists such a lack of true...

Disgraced ex-Gov. During an 11-minute speech at Buffalo’s True Bethel Baptist Church, the scandal-scarred former chief executive compared the massacre to the Klu Klux Klan’s extrajudicial killings.

Rush singer and bassist Geddy Lee revealed that he and guitarist Alex Lifeson were forbidden from using a slogan they’d come up with for the launch of their branded beer. Rush Canadian Golden Ale weighs in at 5.5% ABV, and the can features the Starman artwork from the classic album 2112, along with the tagline “Books are for tourists.” But in a new interview with Classic Rock, Lee revealed those words aren't the ones they wanted to be inscribed above the graphic. “Rush fans like beer,” he said. “Hendersons approached us during the pandemic and said, ‘If you’re interested, then...

A Japanese filmmaker is shaking Cannes film audiences to the core with a dystopian vision of her country in which old people agree to be euthanized to solve the challenge of a rapidly aging population. “Plan 75” by Japanese director and writer Chie Hayakawa is based on a very real problem. Japan is the most rapidly-aging industrial society, a trend that is causing huge economic and political problems as a dwindling number of younger people must support a growing army of the old. Close to 30 percent of Japan’s population is over 65, the majority women, and that rate is...

I am a middle-aged African American father, reeling from the sheer horror of what happened to members of my community in Buffalo. Through my pain, I am praying for all the victims and their traumatized families, friends and neighbors -- and for all the minority Americans who are feeling even more afraid now than they did before. (snip) Because you are male, you were born a winner of the patriarchal jackpot. You are more likely to rise to the top of the career ladder and will be better paid on your way up. The state will not attempt to dictate...
