In an important article in Foreign Affairs entitled "The Ukraine Temptation," Stephen Wertheim, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, urges the Biden administration to reject calls to effectively reverse America's strategic pivot to Asia by becoming more involved in the Russia-Ukraine war. Wertheim recognizes that it is China, not Russia, that poses the most immediate threat to U.S. strategic interests. The essence of Wertheim's advice, to paraphrase President Lincoln during the Civil War's Trent Affair, is one Cold War at a time.Wertheim notes that the images of bombed Ukrainian cities that Americans are seeing daily on...

Tony Dungy, the first black coach ever to win a Super Bowl, might have escaped notice this week had he merely supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s “Responsible Fatherhood Initiative.” His real sin was to explain why. Said Dungy, “That hit me.” Predictably, Dungy’s truth-telling stirred the woke beehive. “Dungy standing there cackling,” tweeted former ESPN commentator Keith Olbermann, “a fascist political prop.” “Fathers are extremely important, but yeah,” tweeted Jemele Hill, also formerly with ESPN, “that ain’t how this works. If a father is in the home and can’t find a job, then what?” Deadspin, which comically positions itself as...

Rumble assured its users Wednesday that it will stick to its "mission to protect a free and open internet" by continuing to allow Russia's state-owned news network RT to post on its platform. "There is a reason the public has radically turned against both the corporate media and Big Tech: because you have arrogantly claimed for yourselves the power to decide for the public what information they can and cannot be trusted to hear and what views they can and cannot express," Rumble wrote. "By stark contrast, the reason Rumble is growing so rapidly is because we trust adults to...

A Ukrainian navy missile battery reportedly has struck the Russian navy cruiser Moskva off the coast of Odessa, a strategic port city on the Black Sea in southwest Ukraine. Multiple Ukrainian government officials claimed Wednesday that a Neptune anti-ship battery, apparently hidden in or around Odessa, scored two hits on Moskva, setting the 612-foot vessel ablaze. Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kyiv, announced the strike. So did Maksym Marchenko, head of the administration in Odessa. “Neptune missiles … caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” Marchenko said….

Macron said he “would be careful” using such language “because these two peoples [Russians and Ukrainians] are brothers” during a Wednesday interview with public broadcaster France 2...“I want to continue to try, as much as I can, to stop this war and rebuild peace. I am not sure that an escalation of rhetoric serves that cause,” he added. French President Emmanuel Macron declined to describe Russian actions in Ukraine as a “genocide” a day after President Joe Biden used the term for the first time.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Even after two men were found dead in his California apartment, Ed Buck did not stop injecting gay men with walloping doses of methamphetamine. Federal prosecutors said Buck's unrelenting fervor to satisfy a fetish by preying on vulnerable men, often young and Black, is reason enough to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life. Buck, 67, a big dollar donor to Democratic, LGBTQ and animal rights causes, faces sentencing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for providing fatal doses of drugs, operating a drug den and enticing men to travel for...

European governments have been working hard to find alternatives to both Russian pipeline and liquefied gas in order to become more independent and to keep money from flowing to Vladimir Putin, as well as to bring down energy prices. That’s leading some to rethink restrictions on exploiting shale gas reserves. The U.K. government last week commissioned the British Geological Survey to review the safety of fracking, which is currently subject to a moratorium, now that the war in Ukraine has locked in and exacerbated high energy prices. Separately, a mix of British business leaders have begun a campaign of their...

On Wednesday, Biden authorizedto supply Ukraine with a new $800 million military package including helicopters, armored vehicles, and cannon artillery. Unfortunately, Biden has failed to get Ukraine anywhere the number of weapons it needs to fight Russia ....Ukraine needs longer-range drones, rocket artillery, and more lethal tactical combat drones. Biden has called Russia's war a genocide. The president has the means to help Ukraine stop that genocide in favor of victory. He should do so

Under the International Monetary Fund, there is a tool called Special Drawing Rights that was designed by the U.S. and our partners to provide emergency relief to nations experiencing crises. Due to the effectiveness of this reserve asset in helping those who need it the most, it is no surprise that Ukraine has already used the SDRs the country received last year. That’s why Ukrainian officials have asked the United States and other democracies to help them access additional Special Drawing Rights. The United States has a surplus of these IMF reserve assets. We should send them to Ukraine. By...

The warning comes as Russia has begun to stage its forces just across the Ukrainian border for the next phase of Russian President Vladimir Putin's "special military operation" in Ukraine. "We are seeing Ukrainian troops' attempts to carry out sabotage and strike Russian territory," Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. "If such cases continue, the Russian armed forces will strike decision-making centers, including in Kyiv." The threat of a new wave of Russian assaults on Kyiv came on the same day the presidents of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia traveled by train to meet...

Some asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on small boats across the Channel will be given a one-way ticket to Rwanda, under new government plans. Home Secretary Priti Patel is in the African nation to sign a deal for a £120m trial involving mostly single men arriving in Britain via crossings. BBC home editor Mark Easton said ministers face significant legal hurdles and substantial costs. Refugee organisations have criticised the plans as cruel and urged a rethink. Labour said the plan was "unworkable, unethical and extortionate" - the Lib Dems said it would be expensive and ineffective. Precise details...

I lived for very many years in rural Vermont. I’d bought a long-abandoned, post-and-beam farmhouse on a third-class dirt road. The realtor was a German immigrant who’d come to Vermont with his wife and infant children just after the war. He suggested that I call a local builder, Bob, to inspect the house, which was superficially in dreadful shape, but the farm and basement were sound. Bob said he’d be glad to put it right, and he and his brother-in-law restored it to its 1805 perfection. Bob’s family had lived through the war in Germany, and through the famine afterward,...

FETESTI AIR BASE, Romania—As Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened Ukraine in early February, amassing some 150,000 troops along its border, worrying NATO allies, the U.S. Air Force needed to reassure eastern flank Allies, and fast. The 480th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, answered the call. They had one week to deploy to Romania with eight F-16Cs, 150 service members, and a million pounds of equipment. Seven days later, they were flying. “Usually these things takes months to plan,” said 1st Lt. Jayce Webster, project manager for the mission support group “We had to plan airlift, plan ground...

Former Trump administration official Mick Mulvaney said that Joe Biden-backing Hollywood star and Black Lives Matter supporter Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could be one of former President Donald Trump’s serious Republican primary challengers in 2024. After being asked by Politico who could mount a serious challenge to Trump in the 2024 GOP primary, Mulvaney said, “It’s a short list,” but oddly included The Rock on that list. “[Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis could give him a run for his money. [South Carolina Sen.] Tim Scott can give him a run for his money. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson could give him a...
