  • Astronomy Picture of the Day - A Flower-Shaped Rock on Mars

    APOD.NASA.gov ^ | 9 Mar, 2022 | Image Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, MSSS
Explanation: It is one of the more unusual rocks yet found on Mars. Smaller than a penny, the rock has several appendages that make it look, to some, like a flower. Although it would be a major discovery if the rock was truly a fossilized ancient Martian flower, there are less spectacular -- and currently preferred -- explanations for its unusual structure. One theory that has emerged is that the rock is a type of concretion created by minerals deposited by water in cracks or divisions in existing rock. These concretions can be compacted together, can be harder and denser...

The warning signs are everywhere. We are stumbling toward an energy crisis that is likely to be far more severe and long-lasting than the upheavals of the 1970s. And no, this isn’t about Russia or Ukraine. This is about the perilous state of the U.S. electricity grid. If action isn’t taken soon to address the unraveling reliability of the grid, the United States will face the specter of rolling blackouts, factory shutdowns, loss of jobs and soaring electricity bills. Our organization CASE recently released a policy brief highlighting just how dire the situation is. Events In recent years show how...

U.S. consumers likely paid more for a variety of goods and services in February compared to the prior month and year, with prices climbing across the economy amid lingering supply and demand imbalances. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its February Consumer Price Index (CPI) Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET, providing an update on the extent of inflationary pressures directly hitting consumers' wallets. Consensus economists polled by Bloomberg are looking for the CPI to jump by 7.8% in February compared to last year, which would mark the fastest annual jump since 1982. It would also take out...
  • Why have Some People Never Caught Covid? The Answers Could Help Protect Us All

I’m one of the fortunate people who is yet to test positive for Covid. This is despite the fact that I work with live replicating Sars-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid) for my research, teach face-to-face at university, and have school-age children. My fully vaccinated healthy friends of the same age were not so lucky, and some have suffered from more than one case of Covid in the past couple of years. What does this reveal about my immune system? First, we have to consider a number of scenarios. There is a very small chance that I have never come...

So, a complaint was filed with the FBI after the 2020 election that a mentally incompetent person voted in the 2020 election in Philadelphia. Now a year and four months after the election, the FBI is finally investigating. It has been confirmed that this person did in fact vote by mail in ballot, of course, despite lacking the mental capacity to be able to do so, or register to vote. The person who filed the complaint in 2020 is very suspicious of the sincerity of the investigation and possible retaliation.

Hey, whatever happened to that story about Sandra Shells? She was the 70-year-old nurse killed by one of Los Angeles' many "unhoused" individuals (drug-addicted psychopaths) while she waited for a bus at 5:15 in the morning in January, on her way to her job at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. A homeless guy, Kerry Bell, walked up to Shells and punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground and fracturing her skull. She died of her injuries three days later. Her life mattered more even than, say, George Floyd's -- and I can prove it. 1) Shells...

A bill addressing law enforcements use of genetic genealogy DNA databases like GEDmatch and Ancestry failed to pass the Utah House of Representatives late last week amid concerns it was not specific enough to prevent police “fishing expeditions.” The bill would have been the third in the nation to specifically address the use of third-party genetic genealogy databases in police investigations. House Bill 340 “Forensic DNA Privacy Amendments” was sponsored by Rep. Steve Eliason (R-Sandy), and was presented during a House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee in mid-February with the support of Greg Miller, CEO of the Larry H....
  • Psaki Warns to Be on Lookout for Russia Using Chemical or Biological Weapon

Following days of Russia and China accusing the United States of having secret biological weapons projects in Ukraine and claiming to have found evidence of the projects, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that the world should be prepared if Russia uses its claims as an excuse to release a chemical or biological weapon of its own in Ukraine. "Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag...

MINNEAPOLIS — Last year, with the federal government making available huge new sums of money for programs to feed needy children during the pandemic, a nonprofit organization called Advance Youth Athletic Development set up what it described as an enormous child care operation in northeast Minneapolis that could prepare 5,000 dinners each weeknight. Based on the group’s claims, the State of Minnesota channeled $3.2 million of the federal food aid to the program. But on a subzero morning in January, the F.B.I. carried out a series of predawn raids around the region. It revealed a sprawling investigation into Advance Youth...

Hillary Clinton is making it clear she has no plans to run for the White House again, ruling out a possible rematch with former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Asked whether she would be open to running for president again, Clinton laughed it off, telling MSNBC's Morning Joe on Tuesday, "No, no, but I am certainly going to be active in supporting women running for office and other candidates who I think should be re-elected or elected—both women and men." There had been speculation that Clinton could potentially cast a presidential bid in 2024, after skipping the...

Former North Carolina governor Pat McCrory, who is seeking the Republican nomination in a U.S. Senate race, has launched a campaign ad accusing one of his primary rivals, Rep. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), of being too complimentary of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “As Ukrainians bled and died,” McCrory says in the video, “Congressman Budd excused their killer.” The ad then quotes Budd praising Putin as a “very intelligent actor” who had “strategic reasons” for invading Ukraine, including a desire to “protect his southern flank.” Budd said in a February interview with CBS17 TV in Raleigh that he thinks Putin is “evil”...

New York/Abu Dhabi (CNN Business)The oil market has been stretched incredibly thin, with few producers willing — or able — to replace Russian barrels banned by the United States and shunned by others. Enter the United Arab Emirates, which suggested it may be coming to the rescue. The UAE's ambassador to Washington, Yousef Al Otaiba, told CNN Wednesday that the country wants to increase oil production and will encourage the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cartel to ramp up supply. Otaiba's comments sent oil prices dropping like a rock Wednesday. US oil fell 12% to less than $109...

As COVID restrictions end around the country, and Democratic politicians pretend that something about the science has changed instead of their poll numbers being in the dirt, Americans must first demand: apologies. Here, I’ll even go first. I spent much of 2020 and 2021 writing again and again arguing for the opening of schools throughout the country. But in March 2020, I was one of the leading voices urging schools to close. It made no sense to me that my husband had stopped going into the office because of the mysterious new virus but my children continued to go to school.
