CHICAGO -- At least 21 people have been shot, five fatally, in Chicago gun violence over the weekend, police said. One person was dead after being struck by gunfire while in a car Friday evening in Calumet Heights on the Far South Side. The male, whose age wasn't immediately known, was in a car about 6:30 p.m. in the 9300-block of South Harper Avenue when he was struck in the head by gunfire, Chicago police said. A few hours later, a man was fatally shot Friday night in East Chatham on the South Side. The man, 27, was sitting in...

I guess you could say, “Never let a good fence go to waste.” As plans rustle for a possible American echo of the Canadian truckers’ Freedom Convoy, the U.S. Capitol Police are in conversations with the Secret Service about the possibility of reinstalling the temporary fence that has previously encircled the Capitol grounds, a symbol of contrived concern over what the next horrific wave of Trump supporters might do. It was erected after the January 6 riot, as if freshly aggrieved violent hordes might storm the building again and again, and it was up for the “Justice for J6” rally...

Canada is now governed by absurdism, and it is symptomatic of an ailing Western elite. Liberal Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week invoked martial law to arrest and financially destroy truckers on the charge that their largely peaceful protests are “dismantling the Canadian economy” that had already been dismantled for two years under some of the most draconian lockdowns in the world. The trucker “sect,” Trudeau added, is guilty of felonious “unacceptable views.” But his rhetoric still cannot square the circle of demonizing vital workers while conceding he cannot run his country without them. He has invoked the Emergencies...

On February 14, 2022, the Virginia House voted to repeal the controversial “red flag” law, which gave the power to any attorney or law enforcement officer in Virginia to ask a judge for a “substantial risk order” to confiscate guns from a person who poses a “substantial risk” to himself or others. The law also created a registry of such orders. The bill had passed the Committee on Public Safety by an 11 to 10 vote. It passed the house 52 – 47.The controversial Red Flag bill had narrowly passed in 2020 while Governor Northam was in power and Democrats...

Donald Trump's new social media venture, Truth Social, has launched in Apple's App Store, potentially marking the former president's return to social media after he was banned from several platforms last year. The app was available to download shortly before midnight on Sunday and was automatically downloaded to Apple Inc devices belonging to users who had pre-ordered the app. Some users reported either having trouble registering for an account or were added to a waitlist with a message: "Due to massive demand, we have placed you on our waitlist." The app has been available for people invited to use it...

From practically the first day that COVID appeared, New Zealand’s government was on the front line of totalitarianism in terms of trying to keep the virus off its shores. The country’s lockdown was total. With every fanatic rule, it was hard to imagine the government topping itself. And yet that’s exactly what the government is doing. The newest initiative is to fine people for refusing COVID tests—and, if they ignore the fine, destroying them financially and imprisoning them in fortress New Zealand. Beginning in March 2020, New Zealand closed its borders to the world and put the country (and its...

The weird thing about Utah is that while its patriotic, conservative citizens will elect winners like the ever-amusing Orrin Hatch, they are also suckers for prissy invertebrates like Mitt Romney. And now Evan McMullin, the slightly less-lumpy doppelgänger of Brian Stelter (who is a potato), has taken a break from dodging his creditors from his last Toobin Zoom call of a presidential campaign to enter the Utah Senate race against conservative stalwart Senator Mike Lee. McMuffin has got the full backing of the Lincoln Project types, though it might be a hassle campaigning when his biggest supporters can’t come within...

A month ago, it was a free country. Then, its little Mao felt threatened and, suddenly, the gloves are off and the rule of law is gone. One of the hallmarks of liberty is a reliable legal system. In totalitarian countries, one of the ways you control people is to keep them perpetually off-balance. The law and its application are utterly unpredictable. People become paralyzed and dare not do anything that might offend the regime, lest they get destroyed. And that’s what we’re seeing in Canada, where the newly dictatorial government is making no pretense of abiding by the rule...

In a video from Ottawa, a broadcaster stares at the camera in silence as protesters surround him and scream expletives, calling him a liar and bellowing "freedom." Near the U.S. border in Surrey, B.C., a cameraman's equipment is shoved off his shoulder and two men spit on him. A demonstrator follows another journalist closely, yelling that he is a "disgusting, filthy human being," while police escort the reporter through a jeering crowd. Experts and advocates say the treatment of journalists, captured in many cases on video, during recent protests against public health measures should be a wake-up call.

With no public announcements, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) both are studying neurological problems that have appeared in people after receiving the Covid vaccines. In a scoop, Zachary Stieber of the Epoch Times has confirmed via emails that the studies are underway. You can read the report un-paywalled (by special arrangement with the Epoch Times) here: (posted below)

Remember President Clinton? I remember that, after he left office, he regretted that he'd never be ranked among the top presidents because he didn't have a war on his watch. Kosovo need not apply. There's a "tell" here, of course. It is that the leader of a country is not there to hand out goodies in the latest ruling-class enthusiasm for spending other people's money. It is to keep a sharp eye out for enemies. And if an enemy shows up on his watch, he should stick a fork in it. There's a reason why heads of state like the...

Are you "white"? If you go to the paint store and ask for white paint, does the paint match your skin color? If you put your arm against a white appliance, does it look the same? If you are naked in a snowstorm, do you become completely camouflaged? If you put your hand in a copy machine does a blank page come out? No it doesn't, because you aren't white, you are more of a harvest peach. Does that make you "Caucasian"? The word is based off the Caucasus Mountains which basically form the border between Georgia and Russia. I'm...

It has come to this. As George Orwell knew it could. Freedom is fascist. Freedom is slavery. Taylor Dysart, a doctoral candidate at Penn, authored a column in which she claimed that the Canadian truckers’ Freedom Convoy “has surprised onlookers in the United States and Canada,” in large part “because the action seems to violate norms of Canadian ‘politeness.’“ She then opined, “But the convoy represents the extension of a strain of Canadian history that has long masked itself behind ‘peacefulness’ or ‘unity’: settler colonialism.” Huh? Sadly, she wasn’t done. She stated, “The history of Canadian settler colonialism and public...

Rock group Aerosmith released a song in 1987 entitled, “Dude looks like a lady” about a man with an effeminate appearance who could be mistaken for a woman. Today the inverse is playing out in the athletic world, where a lady who looks like a dude -- a male who has transitioned to a female as much as basic biology permits -- is making a mockery of women’s sports. I speak of Lia Thomas, a transgender University of Pennsylvania swimmer who last week, “Dominates 200 yard freestyle at Ivy League swimming championships and sets a new tournament record.” But Lia...

The sister of convicted Wall Street Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff and her husband were found dead in what authorities said was an apparent murder-suicide in Florida, The Associated Press reported. The couple, identified as 87-year-old Sondra Wiener and her 90-year-old husband Marvin, were found unresponsive in their home in Boynton Beach on Thursday, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said, according to AP. The sheriff's office said that detectives from the Violent Crimes Division had arrived to the home and that further investigation indicated "it appears to be a murder/suicide." An official cause of death will be determined by a...

Mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety aren't easy to treat. Medications help many but have a high failure rate and may bring nasty side effects. Talk therapy is time-consuming and expensive. And neither approach is suited to preventing the disorders from developing in the first place. But many people overlook another option that, when it works, can be one of the most effective, least disruptive and cheapest ways of managing mental health disorders: exercise. It's hardly news that exercise is good for your physical health, and has long been extolled as beneficial for mental health, as well. But...

Apparently, Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is trying to force all 159 counties of Georgia into a one-year “maintenance program” to use the same infamous electronic voting system vendor that was used in the 2020 election. If these counties sign up for this program, they will essentially be trapped into using the same machines again in 2022. That’s right: Brad Raffensperger is trying to bluff Georgia’s county election officials into using the same electronic voting machines that made the 2020 election such an international scandal! It’s up to the local counties to decline to use these electronic voting machines...
