If you were to ask any of the 1 million Americans living with multiple sclerosis, they’d probably say their disease started with changes so small they almost didn’t notice them: a wobbly step, a weakening grip, sight going soft around the edges. But MRI scans of their brains — dotted with ghostly white scars — would tell a different story. Those scars are signs of inflammation dating back multiple years. Each spot represents a dead zone filled with mangled remains of thousands, sometimes millions, of neurons. Like city blocks going dark during a power outage, these cells blinked out one...

MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchel said Thursday “Katy Tur Reports” that Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) “completely embarrassed” President Joe Biden by giving a speech on the Senate floor opposing changing the filibuster ahead of Biden meeting with the Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill. Mitchel said, “Kyrsten Sinema did something that is extraordinary. Yes, anyone who was reading her body language had to know where she came down on this. She made no secret of it, but she wasn’t openly publicly verbal about it. But she went to the floor of the Senate within an hour of president coming up there to...

Just under five years ago more than half of the Democrats currently in the Senate signed a letter defending the 60-vote filibuster on legislation – but now many of them are leading the charge to eliminate it as soon as this weekend. "Reality changed," Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said when asked what is different in 2022 compared with 2017, when she was among the signers of the letter led by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Chris Coons, D-Del. -------------- Sen. Mazie Hirono said "reality changed" between 2017 and 2022, which is why she now opposes the Senate filibuster. (AP Photo/Julio...

Pope Francis: Synodality is Not a ‘Search for Majority Consensus’“Let us remember, in this regard, that synodality is not a simple discussion. It is not an ‘adjective.’ Never ‘adjectivize’ the substantiality of life.”VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis said on Thursday that synodality is not a “search for majority consensus,” but rather a “style” guided by the Holy Spirit. The Pope made the remark in an address to a delegation of French Catholic Action groups at the Vatican on Jan. 13. “The Church as a whole is also engaged in a synodal process, and I count on your contribution,” he...

A University of Calgary study has found promising results for the generic drug hydroxychloroquine when used to treat the evolution of disability of primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), the least treatable form of the autoimmune disease. MS affects about 90,000 Canadians with about 15 percent of those diagnosed with primary progressive MS, one of the highest rates in the world. Research teams led by Dr. Marcus Koch, MD. found hydroxychloroquine helped to slow the worsening of disability during the 18-month study. "With primary progressive MS, there is no good treatment to stop or reverse the progression of disease. The disability...

Florida lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow schools districts to put cameras in classrooms and microphones on teachers. The measure was proposed by state Representative Bob Rommel, a Republican from Naples. "I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," he told CBS Miami. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but … it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too." But Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco told the station a handful of Broward County...

Cardinal (Nighty-nite, Baby) Tobin: Refusing to deal with complexity in the church is a form of heresy.Critics who dismiss an ongoing Vatican effort to consult Catholics around the world, part of the pope’s efforts to reinvigorate church life, fail to understand how Francis is trying to reshape the church, one of his cardinal advisors said in a speech on Tuesday.“Synodality is a way of being church, based on the idea, the ideal, that all the baptized are walking together with a shared attention to the Holy Spirit,” Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, said in a keynote address to...

The Supreme Court of the United States denied certain military veterans a chance at greater retirement benefits in a nearly unanimous opinion authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett on Thursday. Justice Neil Gorsuch bucked the 8-1 majority and would have allowed a subset of veterans to recoup more Social Security funds after their service ended. Stylized as Babcock v. Kijakazi, the case turns on the Social Security Act’s so-called “windfall elimination provision,” which is a statute designed by Congress to reduce Social Security payments for retirees who receive separate pension payments. Such retirees would otherwise, in Congress’s view, receive a...

Regularly eating a small serving of dried goji berries may help prevent or delay the development of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in older people, and is estimated to affect more than 11 million in the US and 170 million globally. "AMD affects your central field of vision and can affect your ability to read or recognize faces," said Glenn Yiu, professor. The researchers found that 13 healthy participants aged 45 to 65 who consumed 28 grams (about one ounce, or a handful) of goji berries five times a week for 90...

Republican state legislatures have, across many states in recent months, passed legislation to roll back some of the extraordinary (and often, unlawful) suspensions of time-honored election integrity safeguards during the 2020 election. To the leaders of the Democrat party, this amounts to a return to the poll taxes, firehoses, and dogs of the segregated South. To Republicans, the two “voting rights” laws would amount to a federalization of elections without precedent in American history. What’s more, it’s a solution in search of a problem. There is no crisis of voting rights in America. As anyone who has tried knows, it’s...
