A government panel of experts in Israel has recommended a fourth dose of a Covid-19 vaccine for all people aged over 60 and healthcare workers. The move was welcomed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who said it would help the country get through a potential wave of the Omicron variant. The Israeli health ministry has so far confirmed 341 cases of Omicron. The overall Covid-19 infection rate is also back on the rise, with 903 new cases recorded on Tuesday.

  • Pfizer pill becomes 1st home COVID treatment authorized by U.S.

U.S. health regulators on Wednesday authorized the first pill against COVID-19, a Pfizer drug that Americans will be able to take at home to head off the worst effects of the virus. The long-awaited milestone comes as U.S. cases, hospitalizations and deaths are all rising and health officials warn of a tsunami of new infections from the omicron variant that could overwhelm hospitals. The drug, Paxlovid, is a faster, cheaper way to treat early COVID-19 infections, though initial supplies will be extremely limited. All of the previously authorized drugs against the disease require an IV or an injection. -snip- The...

Bill Gates said he called off his holiday plans as the omicron variant ushers in what he predicts could be the "worst part of the pandemic." He also predicted, however, that the current surge in COVID-19 cases could be over within months, and the pandemic itself may end next year “if we take the right steps.” “Just when it seemed like life would return to normal, we could be entering the worst part of the pandemic,” he tweeted on Tuesday. "Omicron will hit home for all of us. Close friends of mine now have it, and I’ve canceled most of...

Among those who followed the campus culture wars of the 2010s, the name of Yale sociology professor Nicholas Christakis will ring an instant bell. For the uninitiated: in 2015, Christakis, then the master of Yale’s Silliman College, ran afoul of the campus mob after his wife, fellow professor Erika Christakis, dared to question the woke orthodoxy on culturally appropriative Halloween costumes. As punishment for being married to a thoughtcriminal, Christakis ended up alone in a Yale courtyard, surrounded by dozens of angry students who took turns berating him as he tried in vain to reason with them. The ugly incident...

What historical figure is the city of Washington D.C. named after? That SHOULD be common sense, right? Well, not anymore. Media analyst Mark Dice asks random beachgoers in San Diego who our nation's Capital is named after and you'll see their answers are sad and shocking. Many Americans are getting dumber by the day. You better wake up before it's too late.

Expandable campers have really been pushing above and beyond simple pop-tops into more advanced forms, like transforming Cybertruck A-frames, stretchable off-road teardrops, and flip-open truck-top tents. Germany's ICC Offroad played a big role in the rotating Flip90 pickup camper, and it also has another expanding camper design in the pipeline. Its FlexCamp prototype is designed to start the journey as a basic trailer or pickup-top box, expanding up and out at camp to become a cozy micro-cabin for a family of four. ICC Offroad is developing the FlexCamp to meet the demand for a compact, four-season, off-road-ready camping solution. With...

Dubbed the “goth home” by Twitter user Zillow Gone Wild, this single-family dwelling stands out by being so dark. But after installing a new all-black shingle roof, Goodman went a step further and had the entire exterior redone with black gutters and matching vinyl siding. Goodman loved the look so much he took a page from Mick Jagger’s playbook and said “paint it black” for the interior.

U.S. consumer confidence improved by much more than expected in the month of December. The report showed the consumer confidence index climbed to 115.8 in December from an upwardly revised 111.9 in November. Economists had been expecting the consumer confidence index to inch up to 110.7 from the 109.5 originally reported for the previous month. The bigger than expected increase by the headline index reflected an improvement in consumer expectations,

Omicron should be a cause for celebration, not fear. Its symptoms are mild to nonexistent in the majority of the infected, especially the vaccinated; hospitalization rates are over nine times lower than for previous COVID strains; deaths are negligible. The only public health experts whom the media quote are those determined to put the most dire spin on Omicron. There are apparently no circumstances that would warrant a less-than-totalitarian response in advance of any actual disaster. The yearning for more draconian lockdowns and more control over the private sector is palpable. The South African data should lead any coverage of...

The pseudo-medical geniuses at Facebook partner Lead Stories tried to fact-check the British Medical Journal. Then they somehow claimed those actions weren’t censorship. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) responded to a bizarre “fact-check” by Lead Stories of its bombshell report headlined: “Covid-19: Researcher blows the whistle on data integrity issues in Pfizer’s vaccine trial.” The report in question revealed how “Revelations of poor practices at a contract research company helping to carry out Pfizer’s pivotal covid-19 vaccine trial raise questions about data integrity and regulatory oversight.” But Lead Stories Managing Editor Dean Miller, who isn’t a medical professional, wrote a...
  • Wear and Tear in Vulnerable Brain Areas Lead to Lesions Linked to Cognitive Decline in Aging

Lesions (red) occur near areas that must stretch more to accommodate pressure changes of the circulating cerebrospinal fluid. When the walls of the CSF-filled ventricle (black) wear thin, CSF leaks into the brain tissue (grey) and creates lesions. Credit: Stevens Institute of Technology Researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology show that strain on ventricular walls explains where lesions develop in the aging brain. As our brains age, small lesions begin to pop up in the bundles of white matter that carry messages between our neurons. The lesions can damage this white matter and lead to cognitive deficits. Now, researchers at...

By removing three dirty cops from the witness list, the Justice Department hopes to prevent any cross-examination during the trial and, one supposes, any link to January 6. As questions mount about the government’s animating role in the Capitol protest on January 6, the criminal case against the men charged with conspiring to “kidnap” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2020 continues to collapse. Defense attorneys in the Whitmer case are carefully compiling evidence that depicts an elaborate tale of FBI entrapment; at least a dozen FBI informants were involved in the failed plot—equaling one FBI asset per defendant. FBI agents...

CHICAGO — Mayor Lori Lightfoot and health officials announced Tuesday that individuals 5 years of age and older will be required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to dine indoors and visit gyms or entertainment venues where food or drinks are served. According to the mayor’s office, the new requirement goes into effect Jan. 3 and is in response to the rise in COVID-19 cases in part by the omicron variant. It is similar to the requirements already in place in other large cities, including New York City and Los Angeles. “There’s no denying that we’re...

For more than a century, the U.S. government has failed to prevent Americans from consuming politically disfavored intoxicants. Worse, it has systematically made drug use more dangerous by forcing consumers to rely on black-market products of unknown composition, and by pushing traffickers toward increasingly potent substances that are easier to smuggle. The ongoing opioid crisis, which has driven drug-related deaths to record levels, illustrates both of those phenomena. But instead of recognizing the lethal effects of prohibition, President Joe Biden is doubling down on a strategy that has never worked as intended. Last week, Biden signed two executive orders aimed...

The US Army is wrapping up early clinical trials on a universal vaccine it hopes will target all existing coronavirus variants. Named SpFN, for Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle, it has shown promise in non-human primate trials and early human trial results are expected "this month," according to a press release from the US Army Walter Reed Army Institute of Research released Thursday. The jab could also help protect against other coronaviruses beyond COVID-19, which offers hope against future pandemics. A new design The vaccine is designed on a new platform called "self-assembling protein nanoparticle." Unlike most currently available vaccines, which use...

Seventeen years ago, I reprised a Christmas column I'd written in the 1990s for a Texas newspaper. The original column and the 2004 interpretation celebrated a holiday prayer conceived by my favorite grand-aunt, Aunt Lillian, a before-the-big-meal "grace" of gratitude and humble spirit composed with a mother's grasp of Thanksgiving and Christmas appetites and enthusiasms. In 2004 I spent several months on active duty in Iraq. My family and I felt a great deal of gratitude for my return. I gave Lillian's prayer before both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Allow the detour, but Aunt Lillian was a delightful lady and...
