In this episode of the Remnant Underground, Michael J. Matt excoriates the truly preposterous development in Rome whereby the increasingly intolerant and angry Pope Francis choses Christmas 2021, in the middle of a pandemic, to crack down on one of the few growing movements within the Catholic Church today. As Catholics increasingly abandon the out-of-touch Church of Accompaniment, plagued as it is by sexual abuse and financial scandals at the highest levels, Francis turns his sights on faithful Catholics whose only “crime” is their love and devotion to the traditional liturgy and sacraments. A pope who marketed himself on being...

Modern Science’s Broken BargainIt’s up to us to ensure progress serves our ends. The founding manifesto of the modern scientific enterprise—Vannevar Bush’s 1945 classic Science: The Endless Frontier—laid down a promise: that federalizing the academic sciences would protect the universities as bastions of free inquiry and curiosity-driven research. Without such support, Bush argued, the academic sciences would be captured and enslaved by government and corporate political interests. That argument was persuasive to the political authorities of the time. Now, seven decades later, that promise stands broken. Science’s “endless frontier” has become Big Science, a self-aggrandizing cartel organized around the aggressive...

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a catastrophic blow to democracy with disastrous consequences sure to ripple throughout the free world, a majority of democratically-elected representatives decided against legislation proposed by other democratically-elected representatives. “This is the end of democracy as we know it,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for the 486th time since 2016. “It’s unfathomable that the American people would allow such egregious destruction of our country’s democratic foundations by allowing the majority of elected representatives to represent them through legislative action.” President Biden, responding to the subversive circumvention of democracy by following the proven process outlined in the U.S. Constitution, said,...

Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley had strong words for the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) this weekend for its criticisms of Pope Francis. Asked by Argentinean journalist Elisabetta Pique about conservative/liberal polarization among the U.S. bishops, Cardinal O’Malley said that "the episcopal conference is polarized, but it is difficult to put a percentage on the opposing sides. There are also some bishops who are tied to a more conservative policy and the Holy Father himself has commented on the situation of EWTN, where many times the commentators are very critical of the Holy Father, at least of his ideas."

FOURTH WEEK OF ADVENT LUKE 1:26-38 Friends, today’s Gospel declares the significance of Mary’s fiat. When Mary says, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word," she exhibits such faith and thereby undoes the refusal of Eve. And this fiat to the impossible made possible the Incarnation of God. In accepting the seduction of the alluring Mystery, she allowed God’s love to become enfleshed for the transformation of the world. In the Catholic faith, Mary is praised as the Mother of the Church, the matrix of all discipleship. What this...

The mayor of Washington, DC, declared a state of emergency Monday amid a record number of new local COVID infections — triggering booster-shot and renewed mask mandates. All government workers in DC will need to have a booster shot, losing the option to test out of the mandate under the emergency step, said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “All employees, contractors, interns, and grantees of DC Government must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and must have a booster,” Bowser tweeted. A new indoor-mask mandate for the district also will go into effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday and continue at least through Jan....

Congressional candidate Harriet Hageman on Monday received another notable political endorsement for her congressional campaign, this time from U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, a longtime political foe of incumbent U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney. Paul said on Monday that he had the chance to meet with Hageman and discuss their shared conservative views of the federal government, which made him want to endorse her. “Harriet represents the spirit of Wyoming, which is full of people who want to live their lives without the oppressive weight of the federal government on their backs,” Paul said. “Harriet is a staunch defender of every...

Katie Britt’s getting a boost from her former boss, the top Republican on the Appropriations Committee, in her bid to replace him in the Senate. Sen. Richard Shelby plans to use his own campaign funds and sway with colleagues to help Britt overcome Donald Trump-backed primary opposition. Amid a whirlwind of fundraisers and meetings for Britt this month in Washington, many of Shelby’s colleagues described her as extremely well-qualified to succeed him after he retires next year and possibly even win a slot on the powerful committee that oversees $1.3 trillion in annual spending. Shelby’s made no secret of his...

As a moderate, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski sometimes votes with the Republican fold, sometimes against. And sometimes she does both on the same issue, as she did this month on raising the debt limit. Last week, Murkowski broke with most of her party when she voted to make it easier for the Senate to pass an increase in the national debt limit. “Because it was the right thing to do,” Murkowski told reporters. Without an increase, the government would run out of money to pay military and civilian salaries, debt payments and other spending Congress has already agreed to. Murkowski...
