The Taliban issued a statement Monday claiming that they have taken control of Panjshir province, which is located north of Kabul that served as the staging ground of the country’s top resistance force. Photos emerged on social media that showed members of the Taliban standing at the gate of the provincial governor’s compound, Reuters reported. The province was the last holdout of anti-Taliban forces in the country and the only province the Taliban had not seized during their sweep last month.

WASHINGTON — Federal Emergency Management Agency officials expect that they will soon be drawn deeper into the nationwide effort to resettle Afghan refugees, adding another complex challenge to a crushing shower of disasters that has cascaded down on the beleaguered agency over the last 18 months. The White House recently named Bob Fenton, the agency's former acting administrator and head of its Region 9 office, to lead the Homeland Security Department's resettlement task force.... ..."FEMA is stretched thin, relying on an overworked workforce," said a second agency official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Six planes funded by a Glenn Beck-founded charity were identified as some of evacuation aircrafts being grounded by the Taliban in Afghanistan, a report said. The flights chartered by Mercury One cost the organization $750,000 each and are currently sitting empty at an airport in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, an official with a non-governmental organization working on the evacuation told Newsweek. More than 1,600 people, including over 100 Americans are expected to evacuate the country on the planes, which were chartered from Afghanistan’s largest private airline, Kam Air, the report said. The NGO official told Newsweek that nobody is aboard...

HUIXTLA, Mexico -- Mexican border agents and police broke up a caravan of hundreds of migrants Sunday who had set out from southernmost Mexico — the fourth such caravan officials have raided in recent days. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday the strategy of containing migrants in the south was untenable on its own and more investment is needed in the...

We care about tenants and appreciate and understand the challenges faced by those who rent during this pandemic. The “mom and pop” small business owners who rent out housing are also in harm’s way economically as there’s a potential they’ll be out of business due to a lack of revenue. If our small business property owners go out of business, that negatively impacts renters as well as there won’t be enough affordable housing stock available. Sadly, our state has failed those facing housing insecurity during the pandemic — and the Governor and Legislative leaders are admitting it with their extension...

On this date in 1771, the German outlaw Matthias Klostermayr was broken on the wheel in Dillingen. The “Bavarian Robin Hood” (English Wikipedia entry | German) led a band of poachers (their merriness or lack thereof is unrecorded) who in the 1760s did a famous business, exploiting the jigsaw of tiny statelets in the region to keep the heat off by ducking across a border every few weeks. Their exploits zestily raiding the hated private hunting preserves of haughty lords elevated them in the popular imagination to social bandits. They’re really said to have distributed a portion of their booty...

Washington, Sept. 5 (CNA) Former United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday called on the U.S. to stand with Taiwan after 19 Chinese military aircraft, a majority of them being fighter jets, flew into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) early Sunday. "The United States must always stand with Taiwan and for freedom," Pompeo said in a tweet, which also included a Bloomberg report on the Chinese warplanes' Sunday incursion. In the same vein, former U.S. ambassador to Japan and incumbent senator William Hagerty also shared the same Bloomberg report in his twitter account on Sunday. "Communist China...

"We've had two bills from Frankfort, state laws, that have said every campus in Kentucky must have an SRO (school resource officer) armed," said State Rep. Kevin Bratcher (R). "JCPS just refuses to do it." Bratcher, along with two other Republican state representatives, is working on a bill, that would make it mandatory to have SRO's on every single public school campus. The pre-filed bill also removes a clause in the previously passed Safety and Resilience Act that exempts school districts from having an SRO if they can't afford it. "In this day and age, and it's sad to say,...

Gerald E. Harmon, M.D.President, American Medical AssociationAMA Plaza330 N. Wabash Ave., Suite 39300Chicago, IL 60611-5885Dear Dr. Harmon:The AMA has taken the startling and unprecedented position that American physicians should immediately stop prescribing, and pharmacists should stop honoring their prescriptions for ivermectin for COVID-19 patients. The AMA is thus contradicting the professional judgment of a very large number of physicians, who are writing about 88,000 prescriptions per week. It also contradicts the Chairman of the Tokyo Medical Association, Haruo Ozaki, who recommended that all doctors in Japan immediately begin using Ivermectin to treat COVID.AMA claims that ivermectin is dangerous and ineffective...
