Mask mandates are back in Dallas County. As of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, all businesses, public schools, and county buildings must require mask-wearing to prevent the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, according to an executive order signed today by Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. By 2018, however, Hochul had reversed on the issue. She blasted a county clerk that year for vowing to deny driver's licenses to illegal immigrants despite changes to state...

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the congressional investigative arm, on Aug. 11 for a rush review of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) extended renters’ eviction moratorium. Toomey wants GAO to determine whether the moratorium recently ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court but extended at the direction of President Joe Biden by the CDC on Aug. 3 is a regulatory rule subject to the Congressional Review Act (CRA). If the moratorium is subject to CRA, then it could be repealed by a majority vote in the Senate. Toomey has previously used this...

The Taliban fighters we meet are stationed just 30 minutes from one of Afghanistan's largest cities, Mazar-i-Sharif. The "ghanimat" or spoils of war they're showing off include a Humvee, two pick-up vans and a host of powerful machine guns. Ainuddin, a stony-faced former madrassa (religious school) student who's now a local military commander, stands at the centre of a heavily-armed crowd. The insurgents have been capturing new territory on what seems like a daily basis as international troops have all but withdrawn. Caught in the middle is a terrified population. Tens of thousands of ordinary Afghans have had to flee...

Disgraced outgoing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s stain is even affecting the legacy of his late father, three-term Gov. Mario Cuomo. Some Democrats are entertaining a push to remove Mario Cuomo’s name from the new $4 billion Hudson River crossing in Rockland/Westchester — an idea unthinkable just months ago. It would be renamed with its original moniker — the Tappan Zee Bridge. Queens Assemblywoman Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, a Democratic socialist, has signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill to rename the bridge.

"Anecdotally and in clinical settings, we're definitely seeing an uptick in suicides and suicide attempts," At the heart of these numbers are several issues Researchers attribute the high suicide attempt rate to two factors: religious discrimination and community stigma — both of which, they say, prevent Muslim...
