Taliban back brutal rule as they strike for power
BBC ^ | Aug 11 | By Secunder Kermani

The Taliban fighters we meet are stationed just 30 minutes from one of Afghanistan's largest cities, Mazar-i-Sharif.

The "ghanimat" or spoils of war they're showing off include a Humvee, two pick-up vans and a host of powerful machine guns. Ainuddin, a stony-faced former madrassa (religious school) student who's now a local military commander, stands at the centre of a heavily-armed crowd.

The insurgents have been capturing new territory on what seems like a daily basis as international troops have all but withdrawn. Caught in the middle is a terrified population.

Tens of thousands of ordinary Afghans have had to flee their homes - hundreds have been killed or injured in recent weeks.

I ask Ainuddin how he can justify the violence, given the pain it's inflicting on the people he claims to be fighting on behalf of?

"It's fighting, so people are dying," he replies coolly, adding that the group is trying its best "not to harm civilians".

I point out that the Taliban are the ones who have started the fighting.

"No," he retorts. "We had a government and it was overthrown. They [the Americans] started the fighting."

Ainuddin and the rest of the Taliban feel momentum is with them, and that they are on the cusp of returning to dominance after being toppled by the US-led invasion in 2001.

"They are not giving up Western culture… so we have to kill them," he says of the "puppet government" in Kabul.

Shortly after we finish speaking we hear the sound of helicopters above us. The Humvee and the Taliban fighters quickly disperse. It's a reminder of the continuing threat the Afghan air force poses to the insurgents, and that the battle is still far from over.

Nothing to do with us any more but there you go.

If you read the whole thing they proudly claim to be levying less taxes than the official government used to so I suppose there is some news...

Anyone with half a brain knew the Taliban would retake the country once we pulled out. And I'm not going to blame Biden for this. They'd have done the same of Trump was in charge.

Still, it was long past time to go. They can have that s**thole country as far as I care.

I don’t think they would have done the same if Trump was in charge.

The only thing tat could save places like Afghanistan would be to eradicate Islam there completely.

"We had a government and it was overthrown".

Sounds eerily similar...

Could not agree more. Well said! Let these fools have their terrible backward junkyard. Keep intelligence assets available. If they start plotting anything against us, just carpet bomb them again and again until they stop.

I don’t care what they do over there as long as it doesn’t involve us. Leave them alone.

You think the Taliban wouldn't have taken over the country if it were Trump that pulled all the troops out (as he promised to do)?

Of course they would have.

The only difference is that every news media in the country and neocon in congress would've blamed him incessantly for it.

9th century culture. There’s nothing that modern society can do to help these heathens. Nothing.

I know they would not have... Trump made it clear in his talks with Taliban leaders that if they did it after we pulled out he would directly target them and their villages... I tend to believe him.

If they did, I think he would have adjusted quickly to the situation. Not a wait and see what happens kind of guy.

The feminists in the US should read the summary on Wikipedia about Taliban treatment of women, to remind them how good the US was until January, 2021.
Just a few lines on the Taliban in charge in any region (keep Maxine,AOC, Rashida Tlaib and Kamala Harris in mind as you read, please)

Women must not speak loudly in public as no stranger should hear a woman’s voice.

Women were forbidden to laugh loudly as it was considered improper for a stranger to hear a woman’s voice.

Ban on women’s presence on radio, television or at public gatherings of any kind.

The modification of any place names that included the word “women”. For example, “women’s garden” was renamed “spring garden.”

Much worse are the lists of torture and mistreatment for any infractions of rules.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban_treatment_of_women

Also searches for Taliban torture and atrocities have many stories.
The people are on their own now without us but it is truly their problem. A total revolution against their religious governments in Iran and against any Taliban held regions is all that could work. Not our aid.

You mean help like abortion, gay marriage, single parents households, transsexuals, prostitution? We have some heathen traits on our side.
