WINDSOR TERRACE — Another statue of the Virgin Mary was vandalized outside a Catholic Church in New York City, this time early Sunday evening in the Bronx. At about 6 p.m. Sunday, a woman was seen setting fire to the statue outside the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mary Church, at 150th St. and Melrose Avenue. The act was caught on video and broadcast by WABC Channel 7. “A woman came and put some clothing in front of the statue … and set it on fire,” said Father Sean McGillicuddy, pastor of the parish. He added that bystanders called the...

As a field, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence suffers from some rather significant constraints. Aside from the uncertainty involved (e.g., is there life beyond Earth we can actually communicate with?), there are the limitations imposed by technology and the very nature of space and time. For instance, scientists are forced to contend with the possibility that by the time a message is received by an intelligent species, the civilization that sent it will be long dead. Harvard astronomers Amir Siraj and Abraham Loeb tackle this very question in a new study that recently appeared online. Taking their cue from the...

One of the region’s most prolific apartment builders has sued the city of Los Angeles over its COVID-19 eviction moratorium, saying his companies have experienced “astronomical” financial losses and are legally entitled to compensation from the city. GHP Management Corp., which is owned by real estate developer Geoffrey Palmer, said in its lawsuit that 12 buildings that it manages have experienced more than $20 million in lost rental income as a result of the measure. GHP, which filed the lawsuit along with several other Palmer companies, expects that number to triple by the time the provisions of the moratorium have...

For many people who contract mild, moderate, or severe COVID-19, the disease's effects don't disappear when the infection fades. A systematic review and meta-analysis published Monday to the journal Scientific Reports found that 80% of cases result in at least one long-term symptom. The authors of the report scoured more than 18,000 publications, seeking studies assessing the long-term effects of COVID-19 with at least 100 subjects. They found fifteen studies, which collectively followed 47,910 patients for as long as 110 days post-infection. They then pooled the data to discern the prevalence of chronic side effects. "The five most common symptoms...

A man who died in 1999 has been identified as a suspect in the 1980 killing of an Irvine mother in Newport Beach, thanks to advances in DNA technology and investigative genetic genealogy, police announced Monday. Kenneth Elwin Marks is believed to be the person responsible for killing 42-year-old Judith “Judy” Nesbitt on Nov. 26, 1980, while she was showing her family’s boat to a man she thought was a potential buyer, Newport Beach Police Department officials said in a news release. That afternoon, Marks followed Nesbitt into the boat’s sleeping quarters and, after a violent struggle, shot the mother...

Gov. Kate Brown announced Tuesday that Oregonians will be required to start wearing masks in all indoor public spaces regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status -- a move that comes as the pandemic spirals out of control and new projections show COVID-19 hospitalizations could nearly double by September from today’s record numbers. Brown didn’t specify a date for when the mandate will take effect, but she is expected to share more details during a news conference Wednesday. Brown also announced Tuesday that starting as early as Oct. 18 she will require all state employees in the executive branch -- which...

SPRING HILL, Fla. (WFLA) – Carol Jean Murphy opened the mailbox last week to find disturbing news: the IRS thinks she’s dead and won’t process the tax return she filed in February. This is the third tax year Murphy says this has happened. The instructions on the IRS letter direct her to the Social Security Administration to get documentation proving she’s not actually dead. “I just don’t know where the problem lies because when I get to Social Security, they say, no, I’m fine,” Murphy said. Each year, after sitting in a long line at the Social Security Administration office...

CHICAGO (CBS) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s promises to reduce gun violence swept her into office with an overwhelming 2019 win. After a violent weekend with 73 people shot, 10 of whom were killed, Lightfoot has declined to ask for help from the Illinois National Guard. But she has eagerly accepted help from the Department of Justice. They are decisions that help shape a playbook to thwart what the mayor herself calls a crisis of violence in Chicago. CBS 2 dug into city crime data in the three years prior to Lightfoot taking office. In 2016, 4,321 people were shot in...

Feast of Saint Lawrence John 12:24-26 Friends, our Gospel for today contains one of the most beautiful and terrible summations of the Christian message: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." And now this one upon whom the crowds had pinned their hopes is speaking of falling to the earth and dying. And then it gets stranger. "Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in the world will preserve it for...

It looks like yet another instance of “get woke, go broke” for NBC and the Tokyo Olympics. Ratings for the Olympics have been so poor this year that NBC is being forced to hand out “extra commercials” for those who bought advertising during the games, according to Fox News. Experts have pointed to backlash over protesting the U.S. flag and “woke” athletes as the key reason why ratings are down. The ratings dropoff is stunning. Per Fox News: NBC’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on July 26 averaged 14.7 million viewers — for a 49% drop compared to the...

America’s fakest “doctor” is back on television fearmongering about the so-called “delta variant” of the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19), admitting in the process that “vaccinated” people are actively spreading it to others. Tony Fauci, appearing on the fake news program “Face the Nation,” explained to some robotic suit and tie that the “new thinking” surrounding the delta variant is that it easily spreads from person to person, including people who already got injected with a Trump Vaccine. Fauci claims that he and his fellow career bureaucrats have determined that the delta variant easily creates “breakthrough” infections in the vaccinated, though the...
