First lady Jill Biden is being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Thursday to have an object removed from her left foot, an injury sustained on a beach in Hawaii last weekend. Michael LaRosa, spokesman for the first lady, said Mrs. Biden “stepped on an object on the beach which became lodged in her left foot.” The injury occurred last weekend before she conducted two official events in Hawaii, as she was returning from the opening of the Olympics in Japan.

If there was any doubt that President Biden wants to ban the vast majority of guns in the United States, he again clarified his position last week. “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon — whether it’s a — whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle — is ridiculous,” Biden said at a televised CNN townhall meeting. “I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things, but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term.” The president’s...

The 67-year-old pig farming magnate was reportedly detained alongside 20 of his family members and business associates over a dispute with a government-run farm. He is one of a number of high-profile corporate bosses who have been targeted by the Chinese government, the BBC said. Sun has spoken out about politically sensitive topics and has supported prominent human rights lawyers and dissidents by paying their legal costs, the activists group Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) said. In recent pre-trial hearings, Sun reportedly denied the allegations against him but admitted to making mistakes, like posting things online, the BBC reported. Sun's...

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Work on the bipartisan infrastructure bill in Congress has ground to a halt as nobody there is sure what number comes after trillion. "I'm so glad we have been able to reach across the aisle on this bill," said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. "This should give us enough to dig a hole to the center of the earth and throw all the rest of our money in it, and then paint BLM murals on every road, and also fund the construction of 38 billion new Planned Parenthood locations. The most important part of this deal is that Mr....

President Joe Biden endorsed coronavirus vaccine mandates on Thursday, using some of his strongest rhetoric to date to encourage private companies to require employees to get the vaccine. “In addition to providing incentives to encourage vaccination, it’s time to impose requirements on key groups to make sure they’re vaccinated,” Biden said at an event at the White House, endorsing the idea of private businesses everywhere requiring their employees to get vaccinated. “I’d like to see them continue to move in that direction,” he said, about private businesses. He said he asked the Justice Department to issue an opinion on the...

It seems that one of the large COVID vaccine manufacturers is considering calling it quits. Reuters is reporting that AstraZeneca is considering options to exit the vaccine business it was so ready to jump into just a few months ago. A company official said that the organization is trying to determine if the vaccine business is sustainable for the organization. It’s a surprising statement given that the company had very little expense out of its own pockets for the vaccine. AstraZeneca received millions in government aid to help develop and manufacture the COVID vaccine that it produced. In fact, the...

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska education officials announced Thursday that they have largely scrapped plans for gender identity lessons in public school curriculum after an uproar from conservatives who argued that the topics weren't appropriate for children. The new draft of the proposed sexual standards from the Nebraska Department of Education came after agency officials faced intense criticism from parents, school boards, state lawmakers and Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who held town hall events to blast the proposal. Opponents flooded a meeting of the Nebraska State Board of Education, an elected board that oversees the agency. “What we're really trying...

SAN DIEGO, CA—According to sources, Democrats in Washington really want people to get vaccinated. When it comes to undocumented immigrants, however, Democrats don't really seem to care as much. This led local man Damien Cooper to pose as an illegal immigrant so politicians won't bother him about getting vaccinated all the time. "Hola," said Cooper to reporters when asked about the situation. "Donde esta la biblioteca?" The reporters quickly surmised from Cooper's fluent Spanish that he was a Mexican immigrant and it would be racist to question him further. Cooper's employer has also backed off after initially telling him he...

A recent spike in COVID-19 infections driven by the more-transmissible delta variant has pushed Ohio above the benchmark Gov. Mike DeWine had used earlier this year for determining when he might lift the state’s coronavirus health orders. Ohio has averaged 77.4 new COVID-19 infections per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, according to data updated Thursday by the Ohio Department of Health. The previous week’s update showed the state averaged only 46 new infections per 100,000 residents. Earlier this year, DeWine set a benchmark of 50 infections per 100,000 residents for when he would lift all of the state’s...

American multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology behemoth Pfizer Inc. has been at the vanguard of fighting the coronavirus outbreak. It has developed an mRNA based vaccine that is clinically proven to be effective against preventing the complications arising out of COVID-19. As a result, countries across the world have shown eager interest in procuring the vaccine produced by the company. The company, on the other hand, has been extremely finicky in protecting the details of its international COVID-19 agreements. However, recently, a Twitter user who goes by handle @eh_den chanced upon the contract that Pfizer Inc. reportedly gotten into with Albania....

PONTIAC, Mich. – A Pontiac woman accidentally set herself on fire while using rubbing alcohol to torch her car because there were bed bugs inside, police said. Deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office were called at 1:39 p.m. Tuesday to the 1200 block of Perry Street because of a car fire. Officials said a 31-year-old Pontiac woman who owned the car had a panic attack because there were bed bugs inside. She decided to kill the bed bugs by pouring rubbing alcohol inside the car and lighting it on fire, according to authorities. In the process of torching the...

It's the middle of summer and I'm reminded of the hot summer nights from 1979 when I was 17 years old and just got my driver's license. I was borrowing my father's Newport Chrysler and cruising up and down Revere Beach. Kelly's Roast Beef had a fried clam plate for $4.95 which was outrageously expensive at the time. Remember that the minimum wage was $2.65 an hour and I was barely making even that. So a Kelly's clam plate was about 2 hours of corralling and pushing shopping carriages at the Cerretani's Supermarket. But I had a few of them....

The June 2021 Religion and the Vaccine Survey, conducted jointly by PRRI and IFYC, updates and expands on the March 2021 PRRI–IFYC Religion and the Vaccine Survey, documenting how faith-based approaches supporting vaccine uptake can—and did—influence members of key hesitant groups to get vaccinated, as well as which groups pushed the country closer to vaccination goals and which groups still lag behind. The U.S. fell short of the 70% vaccinated goal that the Biden administration set for the July 4th holiday, but it came close. While many states and localities did achieve that goal, the second quarter of 2021 also...

Last night the real Republicans came out in force to support the CCRP and elect new leadership. The Trump endorsed slate, led by Jesse Law, won overwhelmingly. And none of the RINO’s were there. It was literally the most exciting and unified CCRP event I’ve ever attended. The room was packed to the limit. There was no parking. The energy was thrilling. Last night made it abundantly clear who the problem children in the party really are, the RINO’s who didn’t show. But even on the eve of the meeting last night, the loser RINO’s posted messages claiming the executive...

Carbon dioxide may finally get its chance to become a solution in the climate crisis. Italy's Energy Dome says its CO2 batteries will store energy at less than half the cost of lithium "big batteries," while also being very responsive to load demand. This is one of a number of solutions being put forward to replace or complement lithium "big battery" installations designed to soak up excess energy when the grid's not using it, and then feed it back in when it's required.

Fossils found in rugged mountainous terrain in Canada’s Northwest Territories may give a glimpse at the humble dawn of animal life on Earth – sea sponges that inhabited primordial reefs built by bacteria roughly 890 million years ago. A Canadian researcher said on Wednesday the fossils, dating to a time called the Neoproterozoic Period, appear to show distinctive microstructures from the body of a sea sponge built similarly to a species living today called the Mediterranean bath sponge, or Spongia officinalis. If this interpretation is correct, these would be the oldest fossils of animal life by roughly 300 million years.

On this date in 1869, two men of the aboriginal Hesquiat nation of Vancouver Island off British Columbia’s Pacific coast were hanged outside their village by the white colonial authorities, on the charge of gratuitously murdering the (again, white) survivors of a shipwreck. The English-built barque John Bright foundered in a gale just offshore from the location of the eventual gallows in February of that same year, with all aboard lost — including apparently the wife of the captain, their children, and the pretty young English nursemaid who looked after them.* Although within sight of a Hesquiat village also called...
