Energy Dome uses carbon dioxide as a grid-scale battery

Carbon dioxide may finally get its chance to become a solution in the climate crisis. Italy's Energy Dome says its CO2 batteries will store energy at less than half the cost of lithium "big batteries," while also being very responsive to load demand.

This is one of a number of solutions being put forward to replace or complement lithium "big battery" installations designed to soak up excess energy when the grid's not using it, and then feed it back in when it's required.

Getting rid of lithium would be a good thing.

The advantage of this system, to me, is that it doesn’t deny nature the eventual use of the CO2, because of leakage and all that. It just uses physics to generate power.

Just in time for Mars. Keep an eye out for Elon making an investment.

Then there is yesterday’s story about iron-air batteries, but nothing about where all the power for tens of millions of vehicles is coming from - certainly not wind or solar.

Getting rid of lithium would be a good thing.

Not if you're schizo.

No mention of where the CO2 gas comes from. What preparation is necessary for the gas to be collected?

Its a battery so it would compliment the Wind and Solar systems which are not complete weather systems.

But if the CO2 gas is specialized in some way, then this is basically a sales pitch.

75% cycle efficiency seems fairly high, but possible.

This process doesn’t consume CO2, it can be 100 percent recycled. It would have a trivial effect on the amount of CO2 in the air. It’s also likely that it is not the most efficient molecule to use in this process. There are likely others that would be better.

However, over the long term, recycling even a small amount of CO2 means big environmental savings. If you recycle 1,000lbs of CO2 100 times, you’ve saved the environment a million lbs of CO2.

If it seems too good to be true, it is.

The energy density of liquid CO2 is pretty low. Hysteresis of the gas-to-liquid-to-gas cycle is high. (i.e. you get back a lot less than you put in.)

Another green energy boondoggle looking for federal funding. Get the grants, siphon off a few million, accomplish nothing, declare bankruptcy. That’s how they teach it in colleges. (True.!)

Anybody even remember Solyndra? Bueller??

Interesting math you have there.

Not for the big guy. China is meeting with the taliban. Huge lithium deposites in Afghanistan.

I saw a video today of some guy in a Tesla that ran out of juice, pulled a Honda gen set out of his trunk, flagged down a passerby who had a 5 gallon can of gas, and did it the hard way, LOL.

If you take a 1000 lbs. out of the air, it doesn’t matter how many times you recycle it, it still is only 1000 lbs. of CO2.

True, but it’s not making itself into the environment. It’s being re-used without being a pollutant.

Not that I believe that CO2 is a pollutant. It is not.
