Coronavirus case and hospitalization rates are worsening for Los Angeles County’s Black residents, a troubling sign less than a month after California fully reopened its economy. Between mid-May and mid-June, the COVID-19 case rate over a two-week-period rose 18% among Black residents but declined 4% for Latino residents, 6% for white residents and 25% for Asian Americans. And the hospitalization rate for Black residents — who are less likely than other racial and ethnic groups to be vaccinated — grew by 11% while declining for Asian American residents by 12%, Latino residents by 29% and white residents by 37%. Experts...

The Biden administration is launching a new "door-to-door" effort to vaccinate Americans after falling short of its Fourth of July goal of having 70 percent of the adult population with at least one shot of the coronavirus vaccine. Amid the administration's ongoing concerns of a surge of the more contagious Delta variant of the virus, President Biden pitched his plan to boost the vaccinated population during remarks he made on Tuesday. "Now we need to go community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood and often times door-to-door- literally knocking on doors, to get help to the remaining people protected from the...

A Polish brewery has sparked outrage with a new beer called White IPA Matters and an advert featuring a black barman drinking it at a US-themed bar. The Mentzen brewery, owned by right-wing politician Slawomir Mentzen, has been flooded with complaints by people claiming the commercial is racist. It features a black barman cleaning glasses with the camera cutting to symbols of America's Deep South, including a Confederate flag. The camera cuts back to the barman before a customer slides him a bottle of the White IPA - a light-tasting ale generally marketed at people who don't like the taste...

[Catholic Caucus] Concelebration: A new battleground in the liturgy wars?Concelebration is a control-freak’s dream.Pope Francis concelebrating Mass with many others in Mexico July 6, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — The celebration of priests together, when two or more priests celebrate one Mass, has long caused controversy. For decades after the Second Vatican Council, priests have felt under pressure to take part in “concelebrated” Masses instead of celebrating their own Mass, perhaps without a congregation. Concelebration is now being enforced in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, ending the long tradition of large numbers of priests celebrating individually at side altars. Now, concelebration is...

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham told reporters Tuesday he was "amazed at how badly" the first six months of the Biden administration has been for the U.S. "The border is in chaos. Afghanistan is teetering. China is rearing its head. Inflation is growing because we're spending so much money that's not paid for," Graham said. "You see lawlessness in the streets, the cops do not feel supported." Graham said he will be sending a letter to President Biden

Speaking at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California, on July 23, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo attempted a difficult balancing act. On the one hand, Pompeo repudiated more than four decades of American policy toward China. Pompeo argued that the days of the U.S. holding out hope for political liberalization was over. And he called on free nations around the world to lock arms against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) various schemes and threats. On the other hand, Pompeo said he did not want to “seem too eager to tear down President Nixon’s legacy.” While...

Kyle Rittenhouse’s attorney wants a judge to allow him to argue that one of the men his client fatally shot during a Wisconsin protest was a sex offender, saying it supports a defense theory that he attacked Rittenhouse and intended to take his gun because he couldn’t legally possess one. Mark Richards maintained in court filings Thursday that Joseph Rosenbaum was convicted of having sex with a minor in Arizona in 2002 and was prohibited from possessing firearms. Rosenbaum started the altercation with Rittenhouse in hopes of making off with his assault-style rifle, which only bolsters Rittenhouse’s self-defense argument, Richards...

Plant-based meat substitutes taste and chew remarkably similar to real beef, and the 13 items listed on their nutrition labels—vitamins, fats and protein—make them seem essentially equivalent. But a Duke University research team's deeper examination of the nutritional content of plant-based meat alternatives, using a sophisticated tool of the science known as "metabolomics," shows they're as different as plants and animals. Meat-substitute manufacturers have gone to great lengths to make the plant-based product as meaty as possible, including adding leghemoglobin, an iron-carrying molecule from soy, and red beet, berries and carrot extracts to simulate bloodiness. The texture of near-meat is...

A white Ohio police chief has been forced out of his job after he was caught on video putting a Ku Klux Klan sign on a black officer’s desk — in what he claimed was a joke between the two colleagues. Sheffield Lake Police Chief Anthony Campo — a cop for 33 years — was caught on surveillance video taking the KKK sign from a copy machine last Friday, officials said. He then carefully arranges the bright yellow hooded raincoat seemingly to resemble the hood and robe used by the racist hate group. The video, which has no audio, shows...

A former Alabama high school teacher who once claimed it was her constitutional right to have sex with two of her students has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison. Carrie Cabri Witt, 47, will get to serve most of her sentence on probation, after spending 18 months behind bars and another 18 months in a community corrections program, local outlet WAAY reported. Her sentencing on Thursday seemed to put an end to a controversial case that stretched back five years.

State legislation regarding Critical Race Theory and its variants playing out in training and instruction (such as misleadingly-named “antiracism” and “equity”) is a hot political issue. Numerous examples of abusive eduational and workplace trainings that devolve into race-shaming and racial abuse have stoked public anger at CRT as it is practiced. The landscape of state legislation is varied and still developing. Thousands of teachers have pledged to defy any laws restricting their teaching of CRT, and the National Education Association is fully behind the push to expand CRT in K-12. The messaging against opposition to CRT, including legislative action, is...
