Changes to blood cells caused by the coronavirus may explain why so many patients suffer from long Covid, researchers say. German researchers have found that the virus alters the size and stiffness of red and white blood cells, making it harder to get oxygen and nutrients around the body. Their small study of 55 people found that these changes can last for several months, which may explain why many Covid patients become 'long haulers'. They believe the disruption to oxygen flow is the root of the common symptoms which plague long Covid patients - breathing issues, tiredness and headaches. But...

Images obtained by Fox News on Thursday cast new doubts on President Biden’s adamant claims during the 2020 presidential campaign that he never discussed overseas business dealings with his son Hunter. One of the pictures appears to show Biden next to Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim with Hunter off to the side. Two other executives are in the frame along with Hunter's associates. The New York Post, which first reported on the photos, said Hunter and his associates were working at the time on energy deals in Latin America and Mexico. Speculation abounds over whether or not the pandemic-induced growth in homeschooling is temporary. While there are several signs indicating that parents won’t be sending their children back to public schools this fall, and homeschooling continues to be a popular choice, the question remains: for how long and to what extent?According to remarks by one prominent investor, this is just the beginning of a widespread shift away from conventional schooling models toward disruptive innovation in education–with homeschooling leading the way. “It certainly feels like we’re on the front end of a pretty dramatic homeschooling boom,” said Marc Andreessen, co-creator of the...

Microbe communities found in the stomach of cows can break down plastic, potentially offering a sustainable way to help reduce litter, a study has found. Specifically, the organisms come from the rumen — the first and largest of the four compartments that make up the bovine stomach.... ...The team found that the microbes from the cows' rumens were capable of breaking down all three plastics — PET, PBAT, PEF — with the powdered versions, with their greater surface areas to attack, unsurprisingly breaking down faster than the films. Moreover — compared to the results of similar studies conducted using single...

As Connor Boyack recently discovered, there is no such thing as bad publicity. The creator of the popular Tuttle Twins children’s book series, which reinforces libertarian values and free-market principles, saw his book sales surge after an established progressive magazine wrote a lengthy feature article attacking the books.Current Affairs published the expletive-laden piece in its July/August print issue, calling libertarianism “one of the most disgraceful political tendencies in the world.”Apparently, not everyone agreed with the far-left writer, Rob Larson, that a political philosophy grounded in individual rights, personal responsibility, and consent is “disgraceful.” Soon after the article appeared online at...

The American embassy in the United Arab Emirates drew criticism from residents of the Middle East for flying a rainbow “Pride” flag. As CNBC reported, the United States and the United Kingdom are the first nations to fly a Pride flag at their diplomatic missions in the Arab Gulf. Currently, Article 354 of the United Arab Emirates’ criminal code states that “whoever uses coercion in having sexual intercourse with a female or sodomy with a male shall be sentenced to capital punishment.” Earlier this week, the U.S. Mission to the U.A.E. tweeted that “on the anniversary of Stonewall, a milestone...

Democrats on Thursday expressed their displeasure with the Supreme Court's final decisions of its 2020-2021 term, accusing the justices of doing "severe damage" to the political system and in some cases re-upping their calls to pack the court with liberal justices appointed by President Biden. One decision was on a challenge to Arizona election laws, including a ban on ballot harvesting. The other was about a California law that required nonprofits to disclose their largest donors to the state government for law enforcement purposes. The court upheld the Arizona laws – which liberals saw as voting rights restrictions and conservatives...

The Magic Kingdom fireworks show at Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Florida, returned Thursday after being suspended for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic — but some parts of the show have changed since 2020. That includes a modification to the introductory greeting of the "Happily Ever After" fireworks that removes the phrase "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls." Disney announced in April that it was adding "Inclusion" as a fifth key component of its customer service. "We want our guests to see their own backgrounds and traditions reflected in the stories, experiences and products they encounter...

Rabat - Over 400 undocumented workers residing in Belgium, primarily Moroccans and Algerians, have been participating in a mass hunger strike since May 21. The workers, many of whom have been working undocumented in Belgium for years, are demanding local authorities to finally legalize their stay in the country. International media coverage has shown the protesters emaciated by the month-long hunger strike, with some having sewn their lips shut. Two Belgian universities and a local church were among the locations of protests. According to Reuters, the majority of the 400 migrants have come from either South Asia or North Africa,...

Expert researchers in STEM fields are already in great danger of being pushed aside by activists of the proper opinion. The rest of us will pay in the longer run Article content Hudlicky’s research productivity is admirable and rare. The mere fact that he obtained a position as a Canada Research Chair meant that his department, as well as the relevant federal governmental agency, both determined he was a fish well worth landing. Plus, the universities that hire researchers competent enough to be considered for a Canada Research Chair competition are not doing those they are attempting to recruit any...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called on the International Olympic Committee to “reconsider” its anti-doping policy Friday following the suspension of US sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson due to a positive test for a chemical found in marijuana at last month’s US Olympic trials. “The criminalization and banning of cannabis is an instrument of racist and colonial policy,” the socialist lawmaker wrote on Twitter. “The IOC should reconsider its suspension of Ms. Richardson and any athletes penalized for cannabis use.”Richardson, who won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.86 seconds at the trials in Eugene, Oregon, June 19, was handed a one-month...

Landscape architect Sarah Ewbank believes Stonehenge once had thatched roof Sarah believes iconic Salisbury monument was an all-purpose Neolithic temple After making models, the architect believes it had a large oval hall overlooked by galleries in which the crowds might have gathered to hear the speakers below She points out that the total diameter — some 30 metres — is almost exactly the same as Shakespeare’s Globe, a similarly thatched building in which, several millennia later, the human voice could carry to every audience member. ‘It is unquestionably the right size for an enclosed public venue,’ she says, speculating that...

These ultrabright flashes have recently been tracked for days, upending ideas about the cataclysms that create them. The Cherenkov Telescope Array, currently under construction, will use a network of more than 100 ground-based telescopes such as this one to monitor the long afterglows of ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray bursts. In July 1967, at the height of the Cold War, American satellites that had been launched to look for Soviet nuclear weapons tests found something wholly unexpected. The Vela 3 and 4 satellites observed brief flashes of high-energy photons, or gamma rays, that appeared to be coming from space. Later, in a 1973...
