New claims for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week, the Department of Labor said Thursday. Initial jobless claims declined to 364,000 for the week ended June 26, a decline of 51,000 from the previous week. Economists polled by Econoday had estimated 395,000 new claims. The White House is readying COVID-19 "surge teams" to send to communities with low vaccination rates to help combat the rapidly spreading delta variant of the coronavirus, officials announced Thursday.
