In a discussion on freerepublic.com, later that month, this correspondent replied to a comment about the efficacy of pistols used to defend against bears:“Actually, there are legions of people who have been badly mauled after using a handgun on a bear. Even some of the vaunted magnums.”OK, give us a few examples. As you claim “legions”, it should not be too hard. The claim was made in...

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, was a messaging piece of legislation that was never meant to be passed. But Democrats are increasingly held hostage by the wing of the party that believes Twitter is real life. Now, the same forces seem intent on dismantling the Biden Administration. First, the Twitter activists of the left bought into the For the People Act rhetoric. The progressive base fully believes the GOP is dismantling democracy. News anchors roared that the GOP couldn't even debate saving democracy or protecting the right to vote. Most Americans do not care. They support needing a...

President Biden visited North Carolina on Thursday amidst a White House push to Americans to get vaccinated against COVID. "It's awful hard as well, to get Latinx vaccinated as well. Why? They're worried they'll be vaccinated and deported," Biden said to a crowd in Raleigh. These comments were immediately following Biden’s remarks about the black population and potential vaccine hesitancy. "There's a reason why it's been harder to get African Americans, initially, to get vaccinated. Because they're used to being experimented on. The Tuskegee Airmen and others. People have memories. People have long memories," Biden said. Biden, however, got the...

Kamala Harris has been in politics for 18 years, yet still can't quite figure out how to keep staff. Five score and forty-five years ago, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, the “Boy General” of the Civil War, and most of his troopers were killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn—or were they? I’ve written a series of comic novels that tell the story of how Custer was actually rescued by an Indian princess, and went on to lead a life, undercover, as a knight-errant in the West. The stories are meant to funny, and driven by action and adventure, but I confess, they have a point. That point is easily summarized by asking what it means to be...

A massive ship carrying a new, giant crane to the Port of Oakland made narrow passages under the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge this morning and is heading for the Ben E. Nutter Terminal. The Zhen Hua 26 from China is 764 feet long, just a tad shorter than San Francisco's iconic Transamerica Pyramid. The crane stands more than 300 feet tall on the ship, and the crew made preparations to allow the crane to fit under the bridges on its final leg from China.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said his optimism on a bipartisan infrastructure bill was “short-lived” following President Joe Biden’s remarks that he would consider vetoing the bill if it doesn’t include a sweeping reconciliation package. His comments came shortly after Biden endorsed the bipartisan deal to spend $1.2 trillion over eight years before stating that “If only one comes to me, this is the only one that comes to me, I’m not signing it“ McConnell accused Biden of “caving” to the far left following the bipartisan breakthrough and offering mixed messaging on the matter.

(NASA/CXC/SAO/P.Slane, et al.) ====================================================================================== A ghostly "hand" reaching through the cosmos has just given us new insight into the violent deaths of massive stars. The spectacular structure is the ejecta from a core-collapse supernova, and, by taking images of it over a 14-year span, astronomers have been able to observe as it blasts into space at around 4,000 kilometers (2,485 miles) per second. At the very tips of the "fingers", the supernova remnant and blast wave - named MSH 15-52 - is punching into a cloud of gas called RCW 89, generating shocks and knots in the material, and...

This is interesting for what it says about the state of European semiconductor manufacturing: German tech giant Bosch has opened the doors to a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dresden, which it hopes will plug the significant hole currently plaguing automotive supply chains. The site – which was estimated to cost the company in excess of €1 billion (AU$1.57 billion) to build – will reportedly begin producing much-needed chips for vehicles by early September this year. It is so far unclear how the product will be distributed, and if German manufacturers – including Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz – will be...

CORUSCANT—Emperor Sheev Palpatine has made a new push for blaster control in an effort to bring peace to the galaxy. “We live in a world where the common rogue feels he can just shoot first whenever he feels like it,” Palpatine said in a speech at the former headquarters of the Galactic Senate. “This violence has to end.” Palpatine was also dismissive of the idea that people need blasters in case they have to overthrow the Empire if it turns tyrannical. “It’s just a ridiculous idea that a rebellion armed with blasters could do anything about us,” he said. “You’d...

When Wency Suo heard Idaho’s lieutenant governor was creating a task force to look into “indoctrination” in schools, she had a mix of emotions: surprise, disappointment, and anger. At the task force’s first meeting, Suo, a rising high school junior in Boise, noticed something right away — the absence of people of color on the task force. She said she already distrusted the intentions behind the task force, and what she saw during the first meeting worried her even more. Caitlin Yang, a rising junior in Boise, said she was skeptical at first when she heard of the task force....

The top U.S. military officer in the United States and President Joe Biden’s military adviser, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark Milley is stoking controversy on the right and left after he defended studying critical race theory as a way to understand “white rage” during a House hearing on Wednesday. Milley, asked to respond to Republican lawmakers’ criticism of critical race theory being taught in the military, caused shock waves throughout the political world that were still reverberating the next day, when he defended it and tied “white rage” to the January 6 Capitol riot.
