9th CIRCUIT COWBOY is the story of Judge Harry Pregerson who, for almost half a century, served on California’s famously liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and was known for placing his personal scruples over what he discounted as abstract legalities. “I looked upon being a judge,” he said, “as a chance to help as many people as I could through the law.” Growing up during the Depression in diverse East Los Angeles, Harry enlisted in the Marines in World War II and served in the Pacific. In the bloody Battle for Okinawa, he received a field commission to lieutenant...

I have accepted the invitation of Texas Governor Greg Abbott to join him on an official visit to our Nation’s decimated Southern Border on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. The Biden Administration inherited from me the strongest, safest, and most secure border in U.S history and in mere weeks they turned it into the single worst border crisis in U.S history. It’s an unmitigated disaster zone. We went from detain-and-remove to catch-and-release. We went from having border security that was the envy of the world to a lawless border that is now pitied around the world. Biden and Harris have handed...

Novavax's vaccine is made of tiny particles studded with the coronavirus spike protein plus honeycomblike molecules, derived from plants, that stimulate the immune system.Image of Novavax's tiny particles studded with coronavirus spike proteinsEighteen months ago, a small vaccinemaker here called Novavax faced an existential threat: delisting by the NASDAQ stock index. On the heels of a second failed vaccine trial in less than 3 years, the firm's shares had plunged to less than $1 for 30 straight days, triggering a warning by NASDAQ. Frantic to conserve cash, the company sold its two Maryland manufacturing facilities, slicing its payroll by more...

Note: This story contains offensive language Late on the night of April 24, the wife of Georgia’s top election official got a chilling text message: “You and your family will be killed very slowly.” A week earlier, Tricia Raffensperger, wife of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, had received another anonymous text: “We plan for the death of you and your family every day.” That followed an April 5 text warning. A family member, the texter told her, was “going to have a very unfortunate incident.” Those messages, which have not been previously reported, illustrate the continuing barrage of threats and...

Furious parents have spoken out against a school board member who told graduating high school students to remember 'jihad' as they 'entered a world of white supremacy'. Asra Nomani, a Muslim mom in the district, said the speech by Fairfax County School Board member, Abrar Omeish, was a 'wake up call.' 'Political Islam has joined with radical left to hijack our schools,' she told Fox & Friends on Tuesday.

A federal watchdog announced on Tuesday that it was starting a review into how the National Institutes of Health manages its grant program, an investigation that likely includes funding given to a Chinese laboratory at the center of COVID-19 questions. Republicans have scrutinized NIH grants to EcoHealth Alliance, a scientific nonprofit that has helped fund research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The review comes amid growing questions about whether the pandemic could have begun with a leak from the lab and whether scientists there were using American money to conduct 'gain of function' experiments on viruses.

A Massachusetts public school system is encouraging students, parents and staff members to report each other for incidents of 'bias' and 'microaggressions', such as saying the principal is 'crazy', mispronouncing names and scheduling tests on 'cultural holidays'. Wellesley Public Schools represents 2,000 elementary pupils, 1,100 in middle school and 1, 500 in high school, 15 miles west of Boston. The district introduced a policy on 'Responding to Incidents of Bias or Discrimination', with an accompanying Google Doc for those connected to the school to anonymously report each other.

Wholesale prices in the U.S. increased at their fastest annual rate ever in May, driven by rising food prices, as soaring inflation threatens to derail the post-pandemic economic recovery. The producer price index, which measures inflation pressure before it reaches consumers, rose 0.8 percent in May for an annual gain of 6.6 percent, the biggest jump since annual data was first compiled in 2010, the Labor Department said Tuesday. The annual gain is somewhat skewed by a 'base effect' from last year's data, when prices plunged early in the pandemic, but nevertheless offers another worrying signal to consumers that their...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Even though California has lifted its mask mandate for most businesses, many people are unsure what to do when it comes to ditching their face coverings. Mindy Pfeifer was one of the only people seen walking into a Trader Joes’ in Studio City on Tuesday. “I felt rebellious in Trader Joe’s right now without a mask,” said Mindy Pfeifer. “I feel like everyone was looking at me, and they were, and then I kept looking around…I feel like I had to justify. Even to the checker, they were like ‘You’re good, you’re good.’ I know but...

I’ll bet that in some corner of your toolshed or garage, an old hoe is leaning against a wall. A hoe that hasn’t seen use in a long, long time, having been replaced by, perhaps, a gasoline- or electric-powered tiller, chemical weed killers, or mulches. Hoeing is not much in vogue these days, perhaps because it seems to require what Charles Dudley Warner, in his 19th century classic “My Summer in the Garden,” said every gardener should have: “an iron back with a hinge in it.” But hoeing is, believe it or not, an easy, safe way to control weeds....

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) plans to formally trigger the budget reconciliation process on Wednesday, setting Democrats up to ram the White House's American Jobs and Family Plans through the Senate via a simple majority vote in July. Why it matters: Announcing this strategy now could be dangerous to the group of 20 bipartisan lawmakers trying to hash out a deal on the "hard" infrastructure portion of President Biden's package. Some of the Republicans in the group may be less keen on continuing negotiations knowing they plan to force the more progressive parts of Biden's plan through a partisan...

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature. […] “Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our...

On May 28, the Illinois House of Representatives passed the highly controversial “comprehensive” sex education bill (SB 818) over the objections of numerous parents, educators, and representatives. The Illinois Senate passed this proposal back on May 20th. For more information on the deeply troubling nature of Comprehensive Sexuality Education, we highly encourage you to watch the documentary, available HERE. SB 818 is the most recent in a string of legislative efforts to sexualize public education, while removing parents and school boards from the decision-making process. School boards are the intended leaders of public education. Elected by parents in the community,...

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal jury is deciding whether one of the nation's biggest private prison companies must pay minimum wage — instead of $1 a day — to immigration detainees who perform tasks like cooking and cleaning at its jail in Washington state.... ...GEO's response is that the detainees simply aren't employees. Even if they were, the company says, it would be unlawfully discriminatory for Washington to require GEO to pay them minimum wage — now $13.69 an hour — when the state doesn't pay minimum wage to inmates who work at its own prisons or other detention facilities....
