“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).
18 is three sixes, and appropriate for pride—Satan’s sin. Antichrist is the man of three sixes, and he is the man of pride. This is an oft-quoted verse. It is usually misquoted as “Pride goeth before a fall,” but it is “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
We have a biblical example of this: “But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense” (2 Chronicles 26:16).
Uzziah the king stepped into the office of a priest, which was forbidden to all but the Levites. But because he was king, he thought he was above the Law and God struck him down with leprosy. He transgressed against the Lord his God and went into the temple to burn incense. He became proud and as a result he overstepped his boundaries.
A force stronger than gravity brings men down – pride! Solomon gave an axiom here that all men should memorize and consider every day. Getting arrogant or puffed up about anything is a sure way to end up flat on your face. Haughty or proud men are going down just as surely as nuts fall from a tree. Humble yourself today, reader, and hate your pride.
Here is key wisdom from a wise and successful king. He knew better than any consultant or philosopher what works best for prosperity and success in life. He repeated this warning often, indicating its importance, but you will not be taught this rule in business school or any school for that matter. Natural man loves pride, especially his own!
Faith means coming to Christ as a pauper and trusting in Him as your Benefactor.
If you were drowning, you wouldn't ignore a lifebelt thrown to you. You would grasp it .and trust it to save you. That's how you must trust the Saviour.
If you were dying of hunger or thirst, you wouldn't be too proud to accept a handout. Don't let pride keep you from accepting the gift of eternal life from the Lord, or you will perish.
Some people make the mistake of looking for something in themselves that might be good enough to merit salvation. Don't do it!
Did you ever hear of a ship's crew trying to find anchorage, by fastening the anchor inside the vessel? Never. It is always outside. You must anchor your hope in a Power apart from yourself.
The jail keeper was baptized, but that isn't what saved him. He was saved by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and. was baptized after he had become a believer.
Paul said it is "not of works, lest any man should boast." Neither your work for the church nor the church's work for you can save you.
