Jury deciding if immigration detainees must get minimum wage

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal jury is deciding whether one of the nation's biggest private prison companies must pay minimum wage — instead of $1 a day — to immigration detainees who perform tasks like cooking and cleaning at its jail in Washington state....

...GEO's response is that the detainees simply aren't employees. Even if they were, the company says, it would be unlawfully discriminatory for Washington to require GEO to pay them minimum wage — now $13.69 an hour — when the state doesn't pay minimum wage to inmates who work at its own prisons or other detention facilities.

In her closing argument, GEO attorney Joan Mell accused the state and detainee advocates of using the lawsuits to attack the immigration detention system. GEO has operated the detainee work program for more than a decade, and the state made no effort to get the company to pay the minimum wage until 2017, amid a flurry of lawsuits Ferguson filed against the Trump administration.....

How does one pay minimum wage to another who doesn't have a green card to lawfully work in the United States?

How about, instead of paying them to work, they are required to do hard-labor (with NO pay) until they are deported...

Robert Watson Ferguson is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 18th Attorney General of Washington. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 and 2020.

"Bob" didn't have a problem with the Halfrican stooge's policies for 5 years...

Ferguson plans to be President in about another 11 years. He will be elected Washington State’s next governor when Inslee quits, and after about two terms he will make his bid. And woe unto this country if he gets elected!

This just reminds me of days gone by. Early 80’s working in a jail. There was marine who’d become addled by artillary. He was close to deaf and harmless when sober. But, when he drank he became disruptive and would get himself arrested. Instead of serving his time at the farm, he preferred to serve it at the jail (he’d have his own private cell, better food, a little more freedom...) In return for this arrangement that he wanted, he’s sweep up, take out the trash... nothing strenuous. BUT! Then come the ACLU and a bunch of so-called do-gooders... filed suit in court saying that because he wasn’t being paid, it was forced labor, blah, blah, blah. So... the result was the poor guy had to go serve his time at the farm where younger idiotic scum would torment him day and night. THAT is reality!

This country is so screwed. I’m stocking up and prepping and concealing what I have as much as possible. We had a good run.

I actually think this might make some corporations stop their ridiculous support for illegal immigration.

Quick search, federal incarceration: $88.52/day or $32,310/yr; 15 bucks a day less if they’re in a halfway house, Federal Register, 2017 figures, $102.60/day or $37,449/yr 2018 figures.

but, in sunny Calif, 2019 numbers were $81K/yr or $221.91/day

The above doesn’t include the average $31K/patient for medical treatment
