If present-day electoral politics strike you as disreputable, take comfort in the knowledge that the Republic has survived its share of low-down, brass-knuckle campaigns in the past. The presidential election of 1828 might have been the very dirtiest. This race pitted incumbent John Quincy Adams, the silver-spoon New Englander and son of Federalist founding father John Adams, against Andrew Jackson, the uncouth self-made westerner of Scotch peasant stock. Jackson was [in]famous for his duels, and his willingness to push the envelope on acceptable use of the military forces he commanded. Some foes saw him as an American Napoleon; some supporters,...

Russia has reported the first case of a bird flu strain, H5N8, being passed from poultry to humans. Officials said seven workers at a poultry plant in the south of the country had been infected following an outbreak there in December. "All seven people... are now feeling well," said the head of Russia's consumer health watchdog, Anna Popova. She said that adequate measures had been quickly taken to stop the spread of infection. There was no sign of transmission between humans, Ms Popova said, adding that the case had been reported to the World Health Organization.

Gang 'triggerman' and attempted murderer Dyjuan Tatro leads Democrats' diversity and inclusion efforts The newest employee for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is a former gang member who remains on parole in New York, according to state records. Dyjuan Tatro, a former "triggerman" for an upstate New York gang, started this week as the campaign committee's senior adviser for diversity and inclusion. Tatro, who earned a bachelor's degree while behind bars, was released from federal prison in October 2017—but he is on parole in New York for drug and assault convictions that preceded his federal convictions, according to a database...

Biden signals he cares more about returning to a flawed deal than taking a stand against Iranian terror The former defense secretary Robert Gates famously wrote that Joe Biden "has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades." If the early days of his presidency are any indication, Biden is determined to prove him right. Out of the gate, the administration is demonstrating to the mullahs in Tehran that it so badly wants back into the flawed Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that it is willing to ignore Iran's terror attacks...

Winter storms since late January have induced full-fledged snow fatigue in cities in the South, Midwest and Northeast. Oklahoma CityOklahoma City kicked off its snow season with 0.2 inches five days before Halloween, tying Oct. 26, 1913, for their record earliest first measurable snow of the fall. As of Feb 18, the capital city was less than 3 inches from its snowiest season on record – 25.2 inches in 1947-48, fueled by five significant storms. Little RockIn four days from Valentine's Day through Feb 17, Little Rock picked up 20 inches of snow from two winter storms. They never before...

A fifth night of peaceful protests to denounce the imprisonment of a Spanish rap artist once more devolved into clashes between police and the members of fringe groups who set up street barricades and smashed storefront windows Saturday night in downtown Barcelona. Small groups made up mostly of young people began their nightly cat-and-mouse game with officers an hour after several thousand protesters gathered in the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, which also was where the worst violence took place during earlier demonstrations this week over rapper Pablo Hasél’s detention. Police were also pelted by rocks after a march in...

Several armed bystanders successfully stopped a shooting spree that left three dead, including the suspect, in a New Orleans suburb. The shooting happened at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the suburb of Metairie, Louisiana, around 2:50 p.m., according to a release from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto told reporters that a person went into the gun store and shooting range and fatally shot two people on Saturday. Several individuals engaged with the shooter inside the gun shop and in a parking lot outside.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - The Biden administration is not inviting Russia to join the G7 group of world leaders, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Friday, backing away from former President Donald Trump’s push for Moscow’s membership. Any invitation for Russia to join the G7 would be made in partnership with all of the group’s members, she told reporters, speaking aboard Air Force One.

Back in November I made brief mention of the case of Jodi Shaw, a student life coordinator at Smith College, the fancy women’s college in Massachusetts that counts among its alumna Nancy Reagan. Shaw, a Smith graduate herself who is a self-described liberal, got in trouble with the Smith College administration when she went public on YouTube with complaints about the blatantly racist so-called “anti-racism” programs and campus atmosphere that have been institutionalized at most colleges in recent months and years (see below). Her basic message:“I ask that Smith College stop reducing my personhood to a racial category. Stop telling me...

The number of new coronavirus cases is in steep decline, both in the U.S. and the UK. Here at home, the number of new reported cases per day is below 100,000 — down from almost three times that many early in the year. The daily number of new cases is about what it was in mid-to-late October, before the weather got cold. (All numbers cited are from Worldometer.)Unfortunately, the number of deaths per day attributed to the virus hasn’t declined as sharply. New deaths are averaging a little below 3,000, down from a peak of more than 4,000 in mid-January....

A veteran Bronx superintendent once praised by Chancellor Richard Carranza for her successes in the classroom claims her career was derailed by his “equity” agenda — forcing her to take a demotion in a desperate bid to preserve her pension, according to a $150 million lawsuit. Karen Ames, a 30-year Department of Education employee, says she was targeted by Carranza’s “Disrupt and Dismantle” campaign to oust or marginalize longtime employees because she is over 40, and Jewish. “The agenda of Chancellor Carranza and his senior leadership team was euphemistically touted as an ‘equity platform’ but in reality, it was a...

Seven people at a poultry farm in southern Russia have been infected with H5N8 bird flu, officials say, making it the first time that the highly pathogenic virus has been found in humans. There is no evidence of human-to-human transmission. “Today, I want to inform you about an important scientific discovery made by scientists at the Vector scientific center,” Anna Popova, the head of Russia’s consumer health watchdog, said on Saturday. “The first cases of human infection with [avian influenza A(H5N8)] have been laboratory confirmed.” The virus was found in seven employees at a poultry farm in southern Russia, where...

Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious diseases expert, said on Friday that racial disparities in COVID-19 vaccination are "very disturbing." Fauci made the remark during an interview on MSNBC's "The ReidOut." He and host Joy Reid were discussing data that showed white populations were getting vaccinated at higher rates than communities of color. "They're getting a double whammy against them. Not only do they have the propensity because of their jobs out in the community to get infected; they have the underlying conditions that make them more likely to get a serious outcome," Fauci said of the underserved populations. "The...

President Joe Biden on Friday rejected the “America First” policies that started no wars and brought about Middle East peace agreements, objectives that had not been achieved for decades under either political party. Biden’s G7 speech drew praise from foreign nations. “Biden gave exactly the speech that many Europeans wanted to hear – an America that pats you on the shoulders, that doesn’t criticize or demand,” Germany’s influential Der Spiegel magazine wrote. Biden assured the participants, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the United States is “determined to reengage with Europe,...

Barney Frank - "Banking Queen" w/ caption This is a parody of Rep. Barney Frank (D) and the song "Dancing Queen" by ABBA performed by Paul Shanklin with added captions. The parody of the self-described "left-handed gay Jew" has been featured on Rush Limbaugh's talk radio show. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Rep. Frank, but this is funny. Come on.
