Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf signed another renewal of the state’s disaster declaration tied to the coronavirus pandemic, even as state lawmakers hope to curtail some of his broad powers in emergencies. On Friday, Wolf signed a 90-day extension of the disaster emergency, his fourth renewal of the proclamation. He signed the first order on March 6, the day the first COVID-19 cases were reported in Pennsylvania. After infections, hospitalizations and deaths spiked in November and December, the state is seeing fewer new cases and fewer people are requiring treatment in hospitals. Still, the Wolf administration said this week there is...

As Texans struggle through a prolonged cold snap that has left many homes dark and now flooded with burst water pipes, attention turns to the state-managed power grid and the relative merits of fossil fuels versus green energy. On Thursday, Texas Public Policy Foundation Vice President Chuck DeVore said Texas residents have a lot of "digging out" to do, but once that's done, it's time to consider the "resiliency" of power sources, in addition to reliability. “And as far as what to do in the future, I think that we need to assign a value to grid reliability and resiliency,"...

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine no longer needs to be kept at ultra-freezing temperatures and can be safely stored inside normal medical freezers — making distribution easier, the firm said in a report Friday. The makers of the shots, including the German biotechnology firm BioNTech, have discovered the doses can remain at between 5 and -13 degrees Fahrenheit without spoiling — instead of -94 degrees like previously thought, according to the Financial Times.
  • GameStop hearing proves politicians will put hedge funds ahead of the American people

The GameStop hearing on Capitol Hill was a chance for elective leaders to challenge Wall Street hedge funds on the ethics of taking large short positions on struggling stocks. However, viewers of the highly anticipated hearing were left with plenty of questions and few answers. In fact, the only clear answer from Thursday’s hearing was the majority of politicians on Capitol Hill seem to favor the elites on Wall Street over working class Americans. ...While committee members seemed to completely dismiss the idea that Melvin Capital and other hedge funds conducted an illegal naked short on GameStop, one person who did...

Explanation: After a 203 day interplanetary voyage, and seven minutes of terror, Perseverance has landed on Mars. Confirmation of the successful landing at Jezero crater was announced from mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California at 12:55 pm PST on February 18. The car-sized Mars rover's Front Left Hazard Avoidance Camera acquired this initial low resolution image shortly after touchdown on mission Sol 0. A protective cover is still on the camera, but the shadow of Perseverance, now the most ambitious rover sent to the Red Planet, is visible cast across the martian surface.

Not long after I posted a reply to another post, that in considering what The Republic of Texas is looking to in reference to Governor Abbott and the winter storms disaster declarations, power grid woes and plans to repair / restructure, the word "nuclear" fairly popped into my mind. I wasn't thinking about it. I was musing as to why my stomach was growling after such a bodacious and filling breakfast. And whether I should take a nap before that. How to build a sleet/snowman with a plastic coffee container and whether if it formerly contained a "robust, bold roast",...

More than 90% of Philadelphians surveyed in a new poll from a coalition of community-based groups say they support redistributing money from police toward social, health, and housing programs. The polarizing phrase “defund the police” became a hallmark of protests over the 2020 police killings of Black men and women George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Walter Wallace Jr. But the community-based organization set out with their poll to quantify public support for redirecting police funding to other city services and better understand where people wanted to see investment.

IRVING, Texas - Irving police are investigating what led a former staffer of Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne to commit suicide outside her home Wednesday afternoon. The congresswoman and others were inside the home at the time. Police said they heard a single gunshot, then saw the man lying on the ground outside, and called 911. Van Duyne released a statement Thursday acknowledging she’s known the man for years, and he’s been to her home several times for holiday parties and get-togethers. But why he did this is still unknown.

You are used to ignoring the lying, outrage-seeking, politically manipulative media. But this time, they are spinning lies directly about you. They are exploiting the awful travesty of some people’s inexcusable violence to delegitimize and shame every responsible citizen who took reasonable and lawful means to raise legitimate questions about election integrity. Perhaps you hope you can offer some perspective, tell your side of things. But it’s too late. The media spin is overwhelmingly effective. Nobody will listen, they have made up their minds. They sincerely believe the lies, the disinformation, the emotional manipulation. They sincerely believe you are a...

Hilarious mix-up may have highlighted a potential issue with the vaccine roll-outLiverpool Echo Political Editor Liam Thorp on an amusing vaccine mix-up and the potentially important issue it has brought to light When I received a text saying it was time for my first Covid-19 vaccine I was really surprised - but what came next was frankly surreal. I'm 32 years old with no underlying health conditions, and while I could be described as on the chunky side, I wouldn't have thought of myself as clinically obese (even after lockdown). So I was not expecting to be invited for...

In 2000 when the program was first launched, 6.6 percent of Germany’s electricity came from renewable sources such as solar and wind. In 2019, almost two decades later, the share reached 41.1 percent. That’s where the good news end. In 2000, Germany had an installed capacity of 121 gigawatts with 577 terawatt-hours generated, which is 54 percent as much as it theoretically could have done (that is, 54 percent was its capacity factor). But in 2019, the country only produced a meager 5 percent more (607 TWh). During the twenty-year period, the Germans also paid a hefty price for the...

The U.S. government is acknowledging for the first time that right-wing extremists were responsible for the majority of fatal domestic terrorist attacks last year, according to an internal report circulated by the Department of Homeland Security last week and obtained by Yahoo News. A review of last year’s domestic terrorist incidents by a DHS fusion center — which shares threat-related information between federal, state and local partners — found that although civil unrest and antigovernment violence were associated with “non-affiliated, right-wing and left-wing actors, right-wing [domestic violent extremists] were responsible for the majority of fatal attacks in the Homeland in...

Big Data Poll Director Richard Baris slammed a CNBC economic survey arguing that President Joe Biden won an initial approval rating that topped the first ratings of the last four presidents. CNBC’s recent All-America Economic Survey of 1,000 people claimed that Biden’s leftist agenda won him a whopping 62 percent initial approval rating for his “handling of the economy and for uniting the country.” The result supposedly topped the “first ratings of the last four presidents.” In addition, Biden’s initial rating was “18 points higher than Trump’s.” Baris summed up Biden’s numbers in one sentence: “At this point, there’s no...

On CBS’s Magnum PI (S3 E8 February 12 2021), a twelve-year-old steals his father’s gun from a bedside table and accidentally shoots his ten-year-old brother. The message is parents should be afraid of guns in the home even if the parent is at home. But this again greatly exaggerates the dangers of guns in the home. In 2019, there were 37 accidental gun deaths for children under eleven years of age. Past research has shown that most of those involve shots from adult males, most in the mid to late 20s, who also have criminal records and are very likely...
