I wended my way up the Walgreens greeting card aisle. I stopped dead in my tracks. A card featured a cartoon image of a white man with a mullet haircut. This cartoon character wore a baseball or seed cap and a sleeveless t-shirt, a so-called "guinea T," "dago T" or "wife-beater." The very names convey class and ethnic contempt, as the New York Times points out. "Is the vilification of working-class men fair?" The Times laments, in an op-ed entitled "Are We Really Still Calling This Shirt a 'Wife Beater'?" Over the sleeveless t-shirt, the character on the card was...

Dennis Quaid is taking heat for joining a $300 million federal public service campaign that reportedly will put a positive spin on the Trump administration’s handling of the COVID-19 emergency. Since news of the ad blitz first broke on Politico, it has been earning criticism –including for its choice of celebrities set to tape spots. “The Big Easy” star has publicly praised President Trump’s handling of the virus, and has already taped an ad with administration infectious-disease expert Anthony Fauci, Politico reported Friday. Surgeon General Jerome Adams has paired with gospel singer CeCe Winans. The Health and Human Services team...

COLUSA, Calif. — A Northern California high school teacher threatened to kick a student out of a virtual class if he didn’t remove a “Trump 2020” campaign flag from his camera view. The 16-year-old left the Zoom meeting for his Colusa High School chemistry class before the teacher could remove him, according to the boy’s mother, Tiffany. The teen was working from his bedroom where the political flag is pinned to the wall, his mother said. Another student in the classroom took a recording of the virtual classroom as the teacher counted to 15. This is the only reported video...

Supreme Court fight pushes Senate toward brink BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 09/26/20 01:02 PM EDT The burgeoning fight to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat is pouring fuel onto already simmering tensions in the Senate and threatening to fundamentally reshape the institution. Senators in both parties acknowledge the level of dysfunction in a chamber where the bulk of their time is spent processing nominations amid failures to break stalemates on pressing national issues such as coronavirus relief and police reform. “I’m praying to God that the better angels start flying with my colleagues. That’s all I can tell...

A new database is the first to comprehensively document Big Pharma’s abuse of the regulatory process — a tactic by drugmakers to prevent generic competition and extend their stranglehold over the market. In 2011, Elsa Dixler was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. That August, she was prescribed Revlimid, a drug that had come on the market six years earlier. By January 2012, she went into full remission, where she has remained since. So long as Revlimid retains its effectiveness, she will take it for the rest of her life. “I was able to go back to work, see my daughter receive...

Secularism Lives Loudly Within Biden The upcoming Supreme Court fight will expose it. With Sonia Sotomayor on her nomination in 2009 Joe Biden has said that he will only appoint “living” constitutionalists to the courts. Unless they find unstated rights in the Constitution, he won’t name them: “I would look to judges, potential nominees, they would have to acknowledge the fact that there are unenumerated rights that are nonetheless constitutional rights; they’re not mentioned by name in the Constitution.”In other words, his ideal judge is a left-wing activist willing to legislate from the bench according to whatever the liberal zeitgeist...

Former Vice President Joe Biden has a 6% lead over incumbent President Donald Trump in Minnesota, a new KARE 11/MPR News/Star Tribune Minnesota Poll demonstrates. When asked who they would vote for if the 2020 presidential election were held today, 48% of Minnesota voters said Biden while 42% chose Trump. Two percent chose other candidates and 8% were undecided. Besides political party, urban and rural areas marked the widest disparity. While 70% of Hennepin and Ramsey County residents support Biden,...

The two dozen tech geniuses who endorsed Joe Biden in a recent New York Times letter showed an obliviousness all too typical of the industry. Biden and running mate Kamala Harris “listen to experts before setting public policy,” they claim — which evidently means they’ll favor the tech industry’s preferences when it comes to immigration policy. The 24 winners of the Turing Award, aka the Nobel Prize of programming, don’t run the Big Tech companies. But they clearly join in the industry’s upset over H-1B visas, which normally allow for the recruitment of immigrants with specialized skills — until President...

WASHINGTON — Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court, has compiled an almost uniformly conservative voting record in cases touching on abortion, gun rights, discrimination and immigration. If she is confirmed, she would move the court slightly but firmly to the right, making compromise less likely and putting at risk the right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade. Judge Barrett’s judicial opinions, based on a substantial sample of the hundreds of cases that she has considered in her three years on the federal appeals court in Chicago, are marked by care, clarity and a commitment...

So, as a member of a congregation, I’ve been informed, some members are mailing tithes to the church, since service is via video. Those checks without the full church name, but just church initials (ie; SBC) are being forged and cashed. Sounds like a few thousand is missing at this point - just discovered. Don’t have more details but, you might want to see who’s been cashing your church tithes.

The president traveled to the Democratic stronghold of Miami-Dade County this week to persuade the Latin community to grant him four more years in office. Politically speaking, this in-your-face move demonstrates that the Trump Campaign feels it has a legitimate shot at this crucial voting bloc. It is antithetical to voting trends, so why would Trump’s political strategists suggest he make a push for the Hispanic vote?Let Us Count the Ways Undaunted by Miami-Dade’s electoral past, Mr. Trump went into the belly of the beast – a brash move that garnered a lot of free airtime. This key county...

“Work Out Your Own Salvation?” (Philippians 2:1-18) Last Sunday we began a series of four straight weeks with readings from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. Last week our theme from chapter 1 was “For Your Progress and Joy in the Faith.” Paul said that he was writing to the Philippians to help them make progress and find joy in the Christian faith. This week, we move into chapter 2, where Paul continues along those same lines. And we’ll begin our message today by looking at the part of our text where Paul tells the Philippians: “Work out your own salvation.”...

Towards Another Bloodshed in CanadaÂ’s Elderly Homes? Posted on September 26, 2020September 26, 2020 by covexit In the beginning of this fall season, everything points at an increasing number of outbreaks, infections, sick residents and deaths from COVID-19 in CanadaÂ’s elderly homes. Yes, there are measures that have been taken at the level of institutions offering care to the elderly but, with the growing number of outbreaks, these are already proving to be insufficient. The missing aspects in all the policies and measures seen so far are prophylaxis and early treatment. Experiences in France, the US, Australia and elsewhere...
