A canal boat user accidentally drained 200-year-old waterway - causing £3m worth of damage - after leaving locks open. Water ended up gushing down the Shropshire Union Canal, washing away the banks and leaving a huge gaping hole in the waterway. Trees along the canal were torn from their roots, hundreds of fish died The affected stretch had to be closed, meaning boats could not travel along that bit of the canal. About 15 boats were stranded and more than 10,000 fish were rescued, but many more died when they were washed on to dry land.

"Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15 and your AK-47," said Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke, a former El Paso congressman, during last week's Democratic presidential debate. To some, his remarks sounded like a spontaneous outpouring of emotion. But within minutes of the debate ending, his campaign was marketing pre-printed tee-shirts bearing his carefully rehearsed sound bite. The framers of America's Constitution enshrined the right to keep and bear arms as the Second Amendment in its Bill of Rights because guns were the most tangible guarantee of power in the hands of the people. This is precisely why progressive Democrats,...

Charles Pope Love of the World Fuels the Fear of Death – A Meditation on a Teaching of St. Cyprian On this Feast of St. Cyprian, a classic writing by St. Cyprian comes to mind. It is a meditation on the fundamental human struggle to be free of undue attachment to this world and to have God (and the things waiting for us in Heaven) as our highest priority. In this meditation, St. Cyprian has in mind the Book of James and the Epistle of St. John. Yes, surely these dramatic...

Why Trump Will Win: 'The Evidence of Things Unseen' COMMENTARY .By Frank MieleSeptember 16, 2019 Why Trump Will Win: 'The Evidence of Things Unseen'AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster The New Testament tells us that “faith is … the evidence of things unseen.” If that is true in politics, then the faith of Trump supporters that he will be reelected is based on what was unseen and unheard on the Democrat debate stage in Houston on Thursday — namely, the thriving economy and the many other accomplishments of this administration. Admittedly, being a Trump supporter sometimes tests your faith. When the polls consistently...

New York City schools will excuse absences for students who wish to participate in “climate strikes” taking place at various locales on September 20. Those Interested will need parental permission, and “younger” students must be accompanied by a parent, according to a school district tweet. “We applaud our students when they raise their voices in a safe and respectful manner on issues that matter to them,” another district tweet read. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio joined the Twitter fun in praising students for their activism, and invoked the ever-shrinking amount of time humans have to prevent Earth’s destruction: “We have...

FNC Video In coverage of the Andrew McCabe investigation, there seems to be a lot of adding two plus two and coming up with five. The New York Times and Washington Post have reported that a grand jury met on Thursday in connection with a probe involving McCabe, the FBI’s former deputy director. As I write this column on Friday evening, no indictment has been returned against McCabe. From this, and what seems to be some hopeful speculation about “hints of the case’s weakness” that could possibly have caused grand jurors to “balk,” the Times and the Post suggest that...

Ric Ocasek, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer whose popular new-wave band, The Cars, left a profound impact on rock music, was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday, a police spokesman said. Ocasek was 75. Ocasek's estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova, found him unresponsive Sunday afternoon at his home in Manhattan's Gramercy Park neighborhood, sources told the New York Post, adding that he apparently died of natural causes. The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut album was a smash hit, boosted by singles including "Just What I Needed." The album helped lead the way for new wave's...

James Murdoch has opened up about his professional break from the family business and his new charity in a revealing interview with the New Yorker. The younger of Rupert Murdoch's two sons found himself out of work when Fox merged with Disney earlier this year, but also $2 billion richer thanks to his shares in the company. This seems to have caused some friction between father and son however, and when asked if he had recently spoken to his former boss, Murdoch said: 'There are periods of time when we do not.' He was similarly laconic when asked if he...

A wise man once wrote that 'wisdom is vindicated by her children.' (Matthew 11:19) Or, to put it another way, that we can judge who is truly wise by how their actions work out. If we accept that axiom, then the wisdom of electing our president should be becoming increasingly obvious. Undeniable, really. A case in point: Back in the 1970s, the economy of the Western world was held up for ransom by a few relatively unstable Middle Eastern nations. This, because they, by an act of nature, owned much of the energy upon which the modern world depends. Since...

"The IAA2019 is a huge fail," tweeted former Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann. "It's a sad shadow of what it used to be." Nearly two-thirds of the world's car producers were absent. And word on the German street is that Daimler and Volkswagen Group seriously considered pulling out of the show months before its opening. When pressured by the German car association, they remained. But, in the end, an awe-dropping 24 brands were absent and the number of exhibitors fell 20 percent. And to cap it off, the head of the German car lobby, which hosts the show, abruptly resigned. Even...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem (Old Testament) Daniel 8 Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat 8 In the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, I, Daniel, had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me. 2 In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa in the province of Elam; in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal. 3 I looked up, and there before me was a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up...

Beyond the US, the Top Five countries for beefs with the Pope ROME - Responding to a mini-fracas set off by his recent declaration that he considers it “an honor when Americans are attacking me,” Pope Francis told reporters during an inflight news conference Tuesday that the U.S. is not his only source of heartburn.“Criticism comes not only from the Americans, they’re coming from all over,” Francis said. The comment got me thinking: If we take the U.S. off the table, what are the other countries where criticism of this pope seems most robust?Let’s stipulate two points at the outset.First, Francis...
