The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. While this may be business as usual for Brazil's beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror.

1942: While Japanese reinforcements depart Truk to join the fighting on Guadalcanal, American P-40 Warhawks with the 49th Fighter Group shoot down 15 Japanese fighters and bombers attempting to target the air base in Darwin, Australia. 1944: When Gen. George S. Patton’s Third Army reaches the Seine River, Adolf Hitler orders Gen. Hans Speidel to destroy all bridges in Paris – which Speidel ignores, as well as another order days later to target Paris with V-1 buzz bombs and V-2 rockets. Speidel’s garrison will surrender in two days and the 28th Infantry Division will parade through the streets of Paris,...

Don’t drink the water in Newark. The only thing worse than the crime and corruption in the New Jersey city that gave the nation Cory Booker is its drinking water. First, they found lead in the water in schools and then in people’s homes. In some homes the lead content in the water is four times higher than the federal limit. And Cory Booker, the Senator from New Jersey, running to run the country, is blaming racism. "Newark's water emergency demands our federal government's immediate attention. Everyone deserves clean, safe water - it's shameful that our national crisis of lead-contaminated...

Andrew Yang, the 44-year old entrepreneur who's never run for any political office in his life, currently sits at 3% -- 5th place in the sprawling Democratic field. Only Joe Biden and three high-profile senators are ahead of him.How is this possible? Yang's campaign is all about fear -- fear of the near future where automation and artificial intelligence wreak havoc on the American economy. You might think this downer of a message would attract few votes. But Yang delivers the message with a unique style that has won him converts. And he's been successful enough in fundraising and polling...

Kenyan academics are working gruelling 12-hour shifts writing essays for hundreds of thousands of British and American students, a MailOnline investigation reveals. Slaving away in 'essay factories' in Nairobi, the highly educated experts earn as little as a dollar an hour while their millionaire bosses cream off the profits – and cheating Western teenagers take the credit. The essays are delivered anonymously by email, on time and free from plagiarism, with higher prices charged for a 2:1 or a First. Politicians have called the companies a 'cancer' that is 'undermining our universities brick by brick'. For the first time, MailOnline...

A 5,000-year-old monument has reappeared in Spain after being submerged at the bottom of a reservoir for 50 years. The megalithic site features 144 granite blocks which stand more than six-foot tall and has been dubbed 'Spanish Stonehenge'. Its similarity to the UNESCO World heritage site in Wiltshire is striking, but the Iberian version is made of smaller rocks. It was thought to be condemned to the history books in the 1960s when a Spanish general ordered the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Peraleda de la Mata, near Cáceres in Extremadura.

China said Friday it will impose new tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods and resume duties on American autos. The Chinese State Council said it decided to slap tariffs ranging from 5% to 10% on $75 billion U.S. goods in two batches effective on Sept. 1 and Dec. 15. That happens to be when President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on Chinese goods are to take effect. It also said a 25% tariff will be imposed on U.S. cars and a 5% on auto parts and components, which will go into effect on Dec.15. China had paused these tariffs...

If Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone were a real progressive, he would supply drug addicts with free heroin, fentanyl and methadone at his proposed safe injection sites. It is only what a truly concerned and caring liberal would do, even if it is illegal. Otherwise drug users, looking for a safe place to shoot up — which Curtatone wants to provide — would face an awkward BYOD ( Bring Your Own Drugs) situation. The mayor, who hopes to e

Every year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recalculates its benchmarks for employment calculations. It’s not every year, however, when those revisions chop a half-million jobs out of its previous estimates. In its preliminary calculations, the new benchmark does just that — although it remains to be seen whether those benchmarks will hold up for their final implementation next February: Each year, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey employment estimates are benchmarked to comprehensive counts of employment for the month of March. These counts are derived from state unemployment insurance (UI) tax records that nearly all employers are required to...

As usual, the Fed did NOTHING! It is incredible that they can “speak†without knowing or asking what I am doing, which will be announced shortly. We have a very strong dollar and a very weak Fed. I will work “brilliantly†with both, and the U.S. will do great.. ....My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powel or Chairman Xi? https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1164910399910817797andhttps://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1164910401584291848Â

Earlier this week, my colleague, the wise and empathetic Carly Pildis, wrote a thoughtful and powerful piece about the political future of American Jews. In it, she argues that the Democratic Party, notwithstanding a handful of problematic and relatively inconsequential congresswomen, is still the most safe and welcoming space for Jews, while the president is guilty of rhetoric that is downright anti-Semitic. It is in the spirit of Carly’s call for dialogue that does not shy away from unpleasant assertions that I would like to offer two observations about the political future of American Jews. The first has to do...

Appearing Thursday on the Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) said New York Times politics editor Tom Wright-Piersanti should be fired for his past racist and antisemitic tweets. Zeldin made the plea as part of his comments on how the far-left “The Squad” remain unchecked by the House Democrat leadership for their repeated antisemitism and anti-Israel positions. “An editor from the New York Times is scrubbing his [Twitter] account, this guy Tom Wright-Piersanti, because he was self-describing himself as an antisemite and he was going after Jews and others,” remarked Zeldin, who is Jewish, before adding that...

Trailing badly in the polls and in fund-raising for 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio hopes that an hour on CNN Sunday before the nation’s voters can change his standing. He’s entrenched toward the rear in fund-raising totals. He rejects the validity of the various polls showing him at zero percent. And he also acknowledges that he will probably not qualify for the third Democratic presidential debate next month. Yet Mayor Bill de Blasio refuses to “accept the premise” of questions about the wisdom of his continued candidacy, even as other candidates who shared his political standing, like Gov. Jay Inslee...

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. - A shoplifting incident took a troubling turn recently in New Jersey. Police said three women participated in the crime and they made a mistake that helped authorities track two of them down. One of them walked in with a child and left them in the store after committing the crime. The owner of Bambi Baby shared his surveillance video with WCBS, which showed the three women as they walked in with three children just after 5 p.m. Friday. One of the women spent several minutes attempting to collapse a stroller before leaving with it, but she accidentally...

Earlier this week, Elizabeth earned plaudits from her most devoted fans -- denizens of elite coastal newsrooms -- for apologizing to Native Americans at a forum she attended. The Massachusetts Senator acknowledged that she'd made "mistakes" and caused "harm," but failed to detail what, specifically, those harmful mistakes actually were. Her campaign also memory-holed her disastrous DNA stunt video, which had been hailed by some in the press as brilliant when it was first released, only to slide into the "problematic" column when (once again) genuine Native Americans strongly objected to the nature of her supposed "proof." Out: This dodgy...

A classic dividing line between people has to do with pets: are you a dog or cat person? Many people prefer one over the other, while some like both, and some like neither. Then there are those who despise one or other. Mike Leach doesn’t understand the cat haters. The Washington State Cougars head coach, who is known to opine on random subjects, tweeted Tuesday about his lack of understanding regarding cat hate.

Okay—let’s look at the positives of this story. A Business Insider reporter, Hayley Peterson, tried to buy a gun at Walmart to test “the placement, selection, marketing, and security of firearms in Walmart's stores, and to learn more about the retailer's processes governing gun sales.” In other words, she wanted to make sure that background checks work. So, she’s going to try and buy a gun, which is something that tens of millions of Americans have already done. And she walked into a Walmart—a family-owned business that’s anathema to the Left. After the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, Walmart...
