Rep. Rashida Tlaib's (D-MI) profanity-laced start to her congressional career continued on Twitter on Tuesday. But instead of swearing at President Trump, this time she cursed at the Detroit Police Department. In her trite message, she told the police to get rid of their facial recognition tactics, and shared a Vice News story about Sen. Bernie Sanders being the first 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to endorse a nationwide ban of the practice. .@detroitpolice You should probably rethink this whole facial recognition bulls**t.https://t.co/ZvHEEQxzWB— Rashida Tlaib (@RashidaTlaib) August 20, 2019 Some of the criticisms of facial recognition software is that has been...

Posted on August 20, 2019August 20, 2019 by Msgr. Charles Pope The Double Loss of Being Good for Nothing In the Office of Readings for this past Sunday (20th Sunday of the Year), we read St. John Chrysostom’s meditation on what it means that we are “the salt of the earth.” I would like to ponder his teaching in three stages. The DignityDo not think, he says, that you are destined for easy struggles or unimportant tasks. You are the salt of the earth (Mat 5:13). What do these words imply? Did the disciples restore what had already turned rotten?...

The rule, which went into effect in May, bans Title X family planning providers from referring patients for abortion care and also requires facilities to financially and physically separate Title X services from abortion services, meaning abortion care must be billed separately and conducted in a separate physical space from the program’s family planning services. “We’ve always known that absent some sort of legal relief or legal action to block the administration from implementing its unlawful rule, that providers would be facing the choice that we see today,” said Jessica Marcella, president of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health...

There is a lot spoken and written about the wine industry’s inability to truly connect with more consumers about what wine is all about and why there is so much to discover if only people took the time to look. But why should they? Are they ever going to change the habits of a lifetime and not just see wine for what essentially it is. An alcoholic drink to enjoy with friends or on your own. That’s where Paul Mabray start his conversations about wine. If wine is truly going to connect with its target audience it needs to really...

The news first reported by Bloomberg on the weekend piqued the interest of economists worldwide. German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, the report said, had for the first time mulled the possibility of putting together an emergency stimulus package to prop up the economy, should a full-blown recession beset the nation. This in itself revealed a fundamental change in thinking and philosophy as for a decade or so Scholz’ predecessor, Wolfgang Schäuble, had been an unwavering supporter of a policy that just wouldn’t accept any fresh borrowing. His balanced budget policy had even made inroads into the German language, with lawmakers...

Welp, this was predictable. A former Planned Parenthood president who was unexpectedly fired because she wanted the "health care" organization to focus less on abortion and more on health care is now a professor at The George Washington University. Zara Kupus of Young America's Foundation publication, The New Guard, reports that Leana Wen will start her new position this fall. "Honored to join exceptional colleagues @GWpublichealth @GW_Workforce to train future generations of public health leaders who are dedicated to achieving health equity and fighting for social justice," Wen tweeted. According to Zupus, Wen will "serve as a distinguished fellow in...

What's the deal with Greenland? Why would POTUS suddenly bring it into focus? Patrick Mack gets to the backgound that explains POTUS's actions. First note that Greenland is really Iceland and Iceland is really more green. It is said the Vikings switched the names to mislead others exploring lands on the periphery of the Artic. Note from history that Greenland, an inhabitable wasteland except for research stations and military bases, was claimed by both the United States and Denmark and the UN assuaged a slab of UN gobbledegook by making it seem as if Denmark had this or that and...

Some day, hopefully long after I’ve shuffled off this mortal coil, I hope you’ll remember that I was the one who tried to warn you about this impending apocalypse. And now it’s at our doors. The socialist vegan hordes who are diligently (and successfully) working to get rid of all the cows and pigs so they can save the planet have a new target in their sights. Chickens. More specifically, they want to replace all of the eggs we eat with “eggs made from plants.†And they’re not joking. The work is already in progress. (Fox Business Network) Impossible Foods’...

Lori Carpentier, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Michigan says the decision to leave Title X will effect more than 42,000 people in Michigan. In 2017, Planned Parenthood of Michigan received $4.3 million from Title X funding, Carpentier says. The withdrawal will cut approximately 20% of the agency's fiscal budget. Carpentier says that Planned Parenthood has been the backbone of Title X since the Nixon administration created the program. “We are 1 of 30 recipients of the grant but we take care of about 70% of the patients in the program,” said Carpentier. As for how Planned Parenthood of...

The Jussie Smollett story has been declared not fit for jokes. “It’s a straight-up tragedy,” declares the co-creator of a Comedy Central show, South Side, set in Chicago. Bashir Salahuddin, a former Jimmy Fallon writer, says “The whole situation is unfortunate. Particularly for the city, there’s bigger problems for them to handle.” Yes, well, there are bigger problems than fake crimes, which is why causing hundreds of hours of police work to be wasted on a fictitious attack staged for the purposes of ego gratification and publicity ought to be punished both criminally and socially. Instead, Smollett was let off...

British journalist and TV personality Piers Morgan in a recent interview with Turning Point UK published on Monday said that he believes “liberals have become unbearable,” and he said this speaking “as a liberal” himself. “Populism is rising because liberals have become unbearable, and I speak as a liberal, OK?” said the “Good Morning Britain” co-anchor. “In my core, I’m probably more liberal than not, although fundamentally, I see myself as a journalist,” he continued, “and I’d like to see both sides of things, and I can argue both, but liberals have become utterly, pathetically illiberal, and it’s a massive...

Because LGBTQ Americans living in poverty often experience unacceptable homophobia and transphobia, many become homeless. A majority of homeless LGBTQ people end up on the streets before they turn 18, and one in four is homeless before turning 16.

Yesterday, Ed Morrissey talked about a report in Politico where the current crop of Democratic candidates (along with President Trump) who are above the age of 70 were described as “super-agers†who are unlikely to die in office. These remarkably “privileged†people (that’s the word they used in the report) tend to have better health care, a comfortable financial situation and better odds to far outstrip the current life expectancy for their respective genders. Great news for them, right? But now we learn that when Barack Obama was deciding on a VP pick back in 2008, Joe Biden told him that...

It’s hard for Americans to understand why so many Chinese students attending school in Western countries have turned out in recent days to express support for the Chinese government in its current conflict with Hong Kong protesters. The Chinese students have tried to shout down demonstrators at pro-democracy rallies in the United States, Canada, Australia and United Kingdom. I don’t agree with the students’ pro-Beijing sentiments on Hong Kong, but I think I understand them. They remind me of myself when I first came to the U.S. to study in 2009. Soon after arriving, I saw protests in front of...

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday called the U.S. Electoral College “a scam” that negatively affects minorities. “We’re coming to you live from the Electoral College,” the New York Democrat said in a video on Instagram, which featured her driving along a sparsely populated highway in what appears to be a desert somewhere in the western part of the country. “Many votes here, as you can see. Very efficient way to choose leadership of the country. I mean I can’t think of any other way, can you?” The freshman congresswoman went on to cite a New York magazine story...

In Utah, where Planned Parenthood has been the state's only Title X grantee since the 1980s, clinics had already been doing "some belt-tightening" ahead of the expected loss of funds, Karrie Galloway, CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, said. "We have made the commitment that we're not going to do any knee-jerk reactions," Galloway said. Her organization receives about $2 million in grants each year from Title X, which serves just under 37,000 patients at seven of the eight Planned Parenthood sites in Utah, Galloway said. But the clinics may not be able to continue offering free care to...

Yesterday we talked about an Associated Press report claiming that the United States has been in secret discussions with some of the most senior members of the Venezuelan socialist party. The suggestion was that we were offering some of these thugs assurances that they wouldn’t be prosecuted for anything if they turned their backs on dictator Nicolas Maduro and hastened his exit from office. Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, both Maduro and President Trump are confirming that the story is true. (AP) President Donald Trump said Tuesday his government is talking to “various representatives” of...

The California legislature has been batting around Assembly Bill 392 for most of the year without getting across the finish line. The legislation was crafted in response to “deadly shootings of unarmed black men†in the state and it had originally been billed as one of the toughest use of force laws regulating police activity in the country. But negotiations with law enforcement officials resulted in some changes being made to the language (without which it wouldn’t have passed) and activists are saying it’s too watered down to be effective. (Including some complaints from a very curious choice of people...

The Danish royal family was “surprised” after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was “absurd.” Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland. "Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be...
