I’ve created a new award, “The Dumbest Tweet of the Week,” on my weekly podcast. A recent winner is Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), an aspiring presidential nominee. Gillibrand has come under attack from voices ranging from Dr. Alveda King to the Washington Post opinion page for equating historical racism with people’s wanting to protect the life of the unborn. That illogical snap in her synaptic transmission, as ridiculous as it might have been, is not what earned her the award for Twitter lunacy. Gillibrand’s winning entry was this: “Here’s an idea: If you win 13-0 — the most goals for...

What a colossal waste of time Wednesday was for the American taxpayer and former White House communications director Hope Hicks. President Trump's former right-hand lady testified before the House Judiciary Committee behind closed doors relating to special counsel Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, but apparently, she declined to answer a variety of questions related to her tenure in the White House. This was expected and it was not exactly clear what the House Judiciary Committee was expecting to get out of Hicks and her team of lawyers besides one or two quotes they could use for...

WASHINGTON (AP) — A World War I memorial in the shape of a 40-foot-tall cross can continue to stand on public land in Maryland, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The justices, in ruling 7-2 in favor of the cross’ backers, concluded that the nearly 100-year-old memorial’s presence on a grassy highway median doesn’t violate the First Amendment’s establishment clause, which prohibits the government from favoring one religion over others. The case had been closely watched because it involves the place of religious symbols in public life. Defenders of the cross in Bladensburg had argued that a ruling against them could...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday said she had "no criticism" of former Vice President Joe Biden invoking his past working relationships with two segregationist senators as an example of "civility." “What I think is most important for all the candidates is authenticity, they are who they are, they’ve lived a life and they have grown from their experiences, and I think that’s what he’s trying to tell us," Pelosi told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. “I have no criticism of what he believes is his story to tell the American people, that he will work with anyone to get a...

he Boston Tea Party famously saw the destruction of the almost 300 chests worth of tea, tossed into the harbor by “Indians” on December 16, 1773. Initial reports described “the total destruction of the Teas aboard the Ships Dartmouth, William, & Eleanor and the Beaver”—the four ships bringing the East India Company’s tea to Boston in 1773. Passed down ever since, the story of the tea’s universal destruction and Bostonians unanimous approval of it has been a founding myth of the American Revolution.[1] But this is not quite accurate. The William never joined the other vessels in Boston Harbor. It...

I don't know if this kind of question is allowed on Free Republic, but given that we have lots of people who have created wealth for themselves on here, I am wondering about something. I came into $2000 unexpectedly and thought I would use it to learn how to invest in the stock market as an independent investor. Thankfully, if it went away tomorrow I would be fine. I opened up an account on a low-cost online brokerage. This brokerage has investment ratings--- A, B, C, D, etc. I am wondering if these have any value or are they bupkus?...

A video by an Iranian activist shows a crowd in the Islamic Republic cheering as a women was dragged across a road and beaten. Her crime, according to the activist, Masih Alinejad, was dancing and not wearing the Islamic hijab required by law for any female older than 13, DailyMail.com reported. Robert Spencer, director of the website Jihad Watch, commented the woman is among the “real feminists, who are taking actual risks to stand up for women’s rights.” “Meanwhile, Leftist feminists in the West are donning the hijab, the symbol of oppression against which these Iranian women are rebelling, in...

What Wall Street knows as an incontrovertible truth is this: Fear is a bargain. And right now, there’s so much fear floating around the market that gold is back on everyone’s radar, with incredible bargains. Gold is trading at over $1,342 an ounce right now. So imagine buying it for $2-$3 an ounce instead. When Wall Street goes bargain hunting, it’s looking for discount gold. One way it does so is by targeting junior miners with major upside, setting short-term price targets that make these undervalued global gold assets ground zero for investors who are fleeing the next potential economic...

As record numbers demonstrate in the streets of Hong Kong to protest a proposed extradition law and the mainland Chinese government, a Christian song penned in 1974 has become an "unofficial anthem." Christian groups in the autonomous territory in southeastern China of approximately 7.4 million people — a former British colony — have been singing "Sing Hallelujah To The Lord" by Linda Stassen-Benjamin while protesting and marching in the streets. The song, which is catchy and simple in melody, is popular around the world and has been translated into many languages. The demonstrators have also been protesting against police brutality....

Well-known theologian John Piper has shared advice for husbands dealing with a quarrelsome wife and offered the reminder that “God is able to make out of a quarrelsome wife a helpful and prudent wife.” In a recent podcast, Piper responded to a reader who asked the pastor to bring “wisdom and clarity” to Bible verses about quarrelsome wives — as the theme is brought up five times throughout Scripture. Piper first emphasized that if a man reads verses like Proverbs 21:9 — “It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a...

The United States Supreme Court has ruled that a 40-foot tall cross erected on public property in Maryland does not violate the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. In a decision released Thursday morning, the high court ruled in American Legion v. American Humanist Association that a cross in Bladensburg meant to honor World War I soldiers did not have to removed, overturning a lower court decision. Justice Samuel Alito authored most of the multi-part majority opinion, being joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Brett Kavanaugh joined. Justice Clarence Thomas filed a concurring opinion,...

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a large cross in Maryland known as the "Peace Cross" is not in violation of the Constitution's Establishment Clause and can remain in place. The American Legion had built 40-foot tall cross in a memorial park for World War I veterans in Maryland, and a state commission later took over responsibility for the park, including caring for the cross. But non-Christian residents argued that the government’s care of the cross is in violation of the Constitution’s separation of church and state. The justices were split in their rulings, with Justices Samuel Alito, Stephen Breyer,...

"The Pentagon has released new color photos as proof that Iran was behind last week's attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman," ABC News reported. Hours before that attack, Iranians launched surface-to-air missile at a U.S. drone monitoring the tankers. The missile missed. In response, 1,000 American troops are being dispatched to the region for the declared purpose of defending American forces already there. Reacting to these charges and U.S. military moves and threats, Iran has said it will resume (did it ever stop?) the enrichment of uranium by next week, which it had pledged not to...
