A little over a hundred years ago, Emperor Karl of Austria, his wife Zita and their small children were forced to leave their last refuge in Austria for Swiss exile. Two abortive attempts to regain the Austrian throne led to their exile and his death in Madeira. Over the following decades the imperial exiles made the best of things, with the heir, Archduke Otto, trying first to catalyse resistance to Hitler on Austria’s part, and then with more success to ensure that the victorious Allies would treat Austria as a victim rather than a perpetrator. Austria was fortunate: after 1955...

VIDEO Jeff Daniels appeared on MSNBC recently to channel the Atticus Finch role he is playing in the Broadway play "To Kill A Mockingbird" in order to obsess like Captain Ahab over his White Whale which in reality is the Big Bad Orange Whale known as Donald Trump. From his apocalyptic vision of the future if Trump is either re-elected or not removed from office via the impeachment process, it is obvious that Dumber than Dumb Daniels might go the Heaven's Gate route to the Mother Ship.

Troops based around Beijing sympathized with Tiananmen Square student demonstrators and comingled with them: For that reason the Chinese Communist Party used force by prevailing on the loyalty of Army units much further away. These troops could rely on nothing other than the words of the CCP, which described striking students as lawless brigands and dangerous, armed traitors. A MILLION people were in Tiananmen Square and China used 300,000 troops to put down the uprising. The firing went on for 48 hours, in total. ALL credible death estimates run into the thousands, but some even go over 10,000. Today, Google...

[Catholic/Orthodox] Pope Francis Slams Traditional Catholics During Visit to Romania Voices anti-populist themes, claims traditionalists are 'safeguarding ashes' Pope Francis is again slamming traditional Catholics, this time during his recent trip to Romania. The pontiff made a visit to the Romanian cities of Bucharest, Bacau, Sumuleu-Ciuc and Blaj from May 31–June 2. "I am happy to find myself in this, your ţara frumoasă [beautiful land], twenty years after the visit of Saint John Paul II," Francis said. Francis observed that his visit coincides with Romania's holding, for the first time, the presidency of the Council of Europe, a thematic political observation close to...

Emily Bonilla is worried her district in metro Orlando will be undercounted during next spring’s once-in-a-decade head count of everybody in the United States because of who lives there: new arrivals, immigrants, the poor, renters and rural residents who sometimes regard government with suspicion. “We’re growing so fast that I know we have more people in the area than the data is stating. This area already is undercounted,” said Bonilla, a county commissioner in one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the U.S. With the 2020 census count less than a year away, a new report says undercounting certain populations...

LONDON (Reuters) - A giant inflatable blimp depicting Donald Trump as a sneering baby in a diaper flew outside the British parliament in London on Tuesday ahead of what is expected to be one of the city’s largest protests against a foreign leader. The six-meter (20 foot) high blimp was raised in Parliament Square at 0900 GMT. It is due to be airborne when Trump holds talks with the outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May nearby in Downing Street. Trump and his wife Melania arrived on Monday for a three-day state visit - a pomp-laden affair that involved a banquet...

by Robert Peterson She was six years old when I first met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sand castle or something and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea. "Hello," she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child. "I'm building," she said. "I see that. What is it?" I asked, not really caring. "Oh, I don't know, I just like...

[Catholic Caucus] Scicluna Stonewalls Maltese Catholic Lay Organization Won’t respond to calls to condemn priest’s pro-homosexual statements MDINA, Malta (ChurchMilitant.com) - Repeated requests to condemn the actions of a Maltese pro-LGBT priest have gone unanswered by Abp. Charles Scicluna, prompting one group to publish a full-page letter in protest. As reported by Church Militant in April, the Catholic lay group Pro Malta Christiana (PMC) first expressed dismay that a Catholic priest would appear on state television to state homosexuality is "part of God's plan" and homosexual relations are perfectly normal "so long as they are based on clear love." The statements were made...

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) announced his candidacy a few weeks ago. He made an appearance on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" and one of the issues that came up was last week's tragic shooting in Virginia Beach. Naturally, Bennet argued for stricter gun control laws. What's shocking, however, is his blame game. Bennet infer Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is responsible for what took place because he fails to bring gun control bills before the Republican-dominated Senate. "I think the president can make a difference. The House of Representatives have passed background checks to close the internet loophole....

Former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of the anti-Trump dossier of salacious and unverified claims about the president’s ties to Russia, has agreed to be questioned by investigators from the United States, according to a report in Britain. The Times (UK) cited sources close to Steele on Tuesday in reporting that the 54-year-old is set to be interviewed in London within weeks. The development comes as attention has returned to the dossier authored by Steele -- especially since its more sensational claims were not substantiated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose report found no evidence of collusion between the...

Jeremy Corbyn this afternoon delivered a firebrand speech to anti-Donald Trump protesters in London - obliquely accusing the President of 'creating a sense of hate' and fostering racism. In an extraordinary speech for a politician who could one day have to work with Mr Trump, the Labour leader did not mention the President by name but played on familiar themes of his critics in a high-energy speech. Mr Corbyn also sprung to the defence of London Mayor Sadiq Khan one day after he was called a 'stone cold loser' by Mr Trump - and suggested the President had 'created a...

Posted on June 3, 2019 by Msgr. Charles Pope O Tempus! Time Belongs to God, Not to Us The ancient Greeks had at least three different words for time: Chronos is close to what we call “clock time.” It answers the question of where we are on the scale used to note sequential time. For example, 3:00 PM refers to an agreed point in the middle of the afternoon. Aeon refers to the fullness of time or to “the ages.” It is akin to our notion of eternity, not as an inordinately long time but as a comprehensive experience of...

Hongkongers gathered in record numbers, organisers said on Tuesday night, to mourn those who lost their lives in a bloody crackdown on democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989. The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China said well over 180,000 had attended the annual candlelight vigil, contrasting with last year’s 115,000. Police put the figure at 37,000 on Tuesday night and 17,000 in 2018. Public opposition to the government’s controversial extradition bill was expected to boost the turnout on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy which left hundreds, possibly more than 1,000, dead.
