A businessman drove himself to the hospital after a stranger slashed his throat Sunday afternoon in Petersburg. Bill Sizemore said he was visiting the future site of his planned mini-golf and go-kart business on South Crater Road when he saw a man standing in the woods nearby. Sizemore, who prides himself on helping those in need, went to check on the man. "When I get to about within 15 feet of him, I ask him, if he's OK," Sizemore said. "As I reach over, walk over and start pointing to the lake, he reaches behind me and cuts me, cuts...

The veneration of relics is so obviously just a late medieval corruption of the faith, right? Actually, it comes from the Bible and the first Christians. A speck of bone, their childhood shoes, even a drop of blood? If anything is distinctive of the devotional practices of the Catholic Church compared to Protestant Christians, it’s the Church's practices surrounding relics. Relics are the remains of those recognized as saints, whether it is a part of their body (first degree relic), something they owned (second degree relic), or even, though less impressive, objects that have touched a first or second degree...

Bullfighter Ivan Fandiño was gored to death Saturday afternoon by a bull of the stockbreeding ranch of Baltasar Iban in the French city of Aire Sur L’Adour, the communications department of the Basque matador told EFE. Fandiño, 36, was feinting the bull with his cape when he tripped, and as he fell defenseless to the ground, the animal gored him in the side. He was taken immediately to the infirmary, and from there to a hospital in Mont de Marsa, where nothing could be done to save his life. Spain’s king and queen expressed their sorrow for the death of...

Protestants claim the Bible is the only rule of faith, meaning that it contains all of the material one needs for theology and that this material is sufficiently clear that one does not need apostolic tradition or the Church’s magisterium (teaching authority) to help one understand it. In the Protestant view, the whole of Christian truth is found within the Bible’s pages. Anything extraneous to the Bible is simply non-authoritative, unnecessary, or wrong—and may well hinder one in coming to God. Catholics, on the other hand, recognize that the Bible does not endorse this view and that, in fact, it...

The House Intelligence Committee is the foremost oversight network with responsibility over the most sensitive and secretive government intelligence, including covert anti-terrorism activity. The Majority Chairman (Nunes) and Minority Chair (Schiff) sit on the CIA oversight team known as the “Intelligence Gang of Eight“: 2017 Congressional Intelligence Oversight “Gang of Eight” I am sure most of you are familiar with the above Intelligence Gang Of Eight. They are responsible for the security oversight for the United States as the they are the House Intelligence Committee. You will recognize them from their work investigating imaginary issues surrounding President Trump. While they...

Husbands Day JENNIFER ROBACK MORSE Father's Day is a day for honoring fathers. But I would like to take a step back and honor men as husbands. In our enlightened, liberated era, we have a tendency to overlook men as husbands, since the father is so often not the husband of the mother. But without some kind of connection between the man and the woman, there is quite literally, no child. I'd like to make the case that the most important thing fathers can do for their children is to love their mother. And likewise, among the many things...

Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” host Chuck Todd said the presidency of Donald Trump was in “peril.” Todd said,” President Trump has been in office for less than five months, and it’s fair to say that his presidency is now in some peril. News organizations led by The Washington Post reported this week that Mr. Trump is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

A Davis woman has been sentenced to five years of probation for breaking windows and leaving bacon at a mosque near Sacramento. The Sacramento Bee reports that 30-year-old Lauren Kirk-Coehlo was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in April. The graduate of UC Berkeley had been jailed since her arrest in mid-February. She admitted vandalizing the Davis Islamic Center in January, destroying six windows and two bicycles. Kirk-Coehlo had faced up to six years in prison after also admitting to a hate-crime allegation. The staggering level of government debt carrying negative yields, after falling from its peak a year ago, is back on the rise. A slew of factors converged in May to send the global total to $9.5 trillion of sovereign debt — a situation where governments effectively are getting paid to borrow money, according to Fitch Ratings. The total represented a 10.5 percent increase from April. Prominent investors have warned of the dangers of so much negative-yielding debt. Janus Henderson's Bill Gross has called it a "supernova" that will "explode," while Deutsche Bank CEO John Cryan has cautioned about "fatal consequences"...

Marine Le Pen, President of France’s Front National has emerged victorious from the second round of voting in her northern French constituency of Pas-de-Calais, exit polls are indicating this evening. Beating President Emmanuel Macron’s candidate, Anne Roquet, Le Pen will have succeeded in her personal gamble of winning a parliamentary seat following defeat in the French presidential race, an outcome which had raised questions about her leadership of the nationalist movement founded by her father, Jean Marie Le Pen. Le Pen, will enter the Assemblée nationale for the first time during the next parliament, and promises to be a thorn...

And that number includes many non-Muslims. In this case, many Muslims didn’t show up because Muslim organizations refused to endorse the march, due to the involvement of the German Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Sunni Muslims generally consider Ahmadiyyas as heretics or apostates. But this is not the first time that attendance at a Muslim rally against terrorism has been decidedly underwhelming. In July 2016, a much smaller than anticipated crowd showed up at a Muslims Against ISIS rally in Washington, D.C. There are thousands of Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan, but only 100 showed up for a rally against ISIS and “Islamophobia”...

A new report by a United Nations expert, and submitted to the U.N. Human Rights Council, blames Israel in part for Palestinian men beating their wives — offering more fuel to those in the Trump administration seeking to leave the council over its anti-Israel bias. The document, first reported by U.N. Watch, which monitors the international body, was written by Dubravka Šimonović — the Special Rapporteur on violence against women — who filed dual reports based on her trips to the region in 2016. The report in question focuses on the “causes and consequences” of violence against women in the...

At the 3 minute, 14 second mark in the video, there's a well-done car commercial featuring the ways father's protect their kids. I can't vouch for the rest of the commercials in the video; some are interesting and some are not (e.g., The first video features infidelity) But the one featuring a father protecting his son is worth the watch.

National Go Fishing Day is observed annually on June 18th. This is a day to take time from your daily routine to find a stream, pond, lake or river, bait your hook, cast your line and catch a fish or two. The practice of catching (or attempting to catch) fish with a hook is known as angling. Catch and release (returning the fish to the water to continue its life) is sometimes expected or required by law. For others, this is a preferred form of fishing. Hobbyists with knowledge of habitat, foraging behavior and migration hone their fishing techniques for...
