There are a number of polls out that have Donald Trump surging in Iowa at the last minute. I do believe Trump is probably ahead, but I am aware of several of the campaigns' internal polls and none of them have anything but Cruz and Trump clustered together very closely. The problem with polling Iowa is that a caucus is not a primary. With a primary, voters go to a polling booth, click the name of the candidate who they support, and leave. With a caucus, often not even in the same location as where voters go to vote in...

Chinese markets saw steep losses in late trade on Tuesday as investors worried about oil prices, and despite an injection of liquidity into the mainland market by the central bank. The benchmark Shanghai Composite closed down 6.42% at 2,749.79. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 2.48% to 18,860.8 points in afternoon trade. Elsewhere, markets in Asia followed US stocks lower as further falls in the price of oil continued to unsettle investors.

"....That $100,000 gift from Trump to the Boehner-allied super PAC was twice as big as his next-biggest contributions. [Trump's] given $50,000 .. to Karl Rove's American Crossroads (2010) [and $50,000 to] the pro-Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Kentuckians for Strong Leadership (2013)..."

DES MOINES, Iowa -- More than 40 years ago, a scheduling quirk vaulted Iowa to the front of the presidential nominating process, and ever since most White House hopefuls have devoted enormous time and money to a state that otherwise would get little attention. Here's how the caucuses work and a little history about the event: HOW IT STARTED For most of Iowa's history, activists have gathered in the winter to deal with politics, but no one outside the state paid attention until 1972, when Democrats established their caucuses in January. That made the party's presidential preference vote the first...

New Hampshire Republicans can do their party a critical service on Feb. 9 by voting for an experienced political figure with a record of results, and thus dealing a blow to the divisive, demagogic candidates running on nativism and other political simplicities. The Globe urges them to support John Kasich, whose record as governor of Ohio shows him to be a pragmatic, fiscally responsible executive, but one who is also concerned with helping the poor. His success in that important swing state, and his record as a moderate conservative who is willing to compromise in pursuit of results, suggests he...

With voting in Iowa a week away, there is panic in Washington DC over what looks like the need to choose between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz In the good old days, we used to sit by the fire and complain about the liberal Republican establishment that favoured moderates like Gerald Ford over conservative heroes like Ronald Reagan. We live in much more complex times now. Today, as fears grow that we might have to make a binary choice between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, it is becoming clear that this is really a tale of two establishments. Facing what...

Hillary Clinton on Monday night conceded she should have apologized sooner for the handling of her private email server while she was serving as secretary of State, saying she should have responded faster. "I had no intention of doing anything other than having a convenient way of communicating and it turned out to be not so convenient," the Democratic presidential front-runner said at CNN's Democratic town hall in Des Moines, Iowa. "So again we've answered every question and we will continue to do so. But maybe being faster - trying to scramble around to find out what all of this...

A record amount of snow has fallen this January in Moscow as the Agency of the city news "Moscow" learned from the Director General of the Moscow's and Moscow Region's Meteobureau Mr. Alexey Lyakhov. "An analysis of our last 50 years' records allows us to say that this January is the most snowy since the January of 1970 with its 100 cm of snow (39 3/8 inches). This January's total snowfall has already risen to 104 cm (41 inch) and the month isn't over yet, so the total can grow more. The 50 years average is 40-45 cm (15 3/4-17...

... And before Cruz's campaign event -- he addressed the media and KWWL's Shirley Descorbeth asked him about this. "Senator...last week Governor Terry Branstad said Iowans shouldn't vote for you...you're against mandates. What's your response to this?" Cruz said, "I'll tell you what I'm hearing from the women and men of Iowa. It's not that we need a deal maker to surrender more on our principles...its rather we want and deserve a consistent conservative." While addressing supporters -- he was more direct. "So , I think there should be no subsidies, no mandates...no nothing. It should be a fair and...

The most controversial episode, as far as China is concerned, is one in season 16, where the Simpsons fly to China to help a relative adopt a baby. This involves the family passing through Tiananmen Square, where they see signs saying: "On this site, in 1989, nothing happened", and later encounter a tank - both references to the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. Homer also makes fun of Mao Zedong's embalmed body - whom he likens to "a little angel who killed 50 million people" and poses as a Buddha to enter an orphanage. China's authorities were also unlikely to be amused...

"Although as a pastor I cannot officially endorse a candidate, I want you to know I would not be here this morning if I were not absolutely convinced that Donald Trump would make a great president of the United States. ... Most Americans know we are in a mess, and as they look at Donald Trump they believe he is the one leader who can reverse the downward death spiral of this nation we love so dearly."

Monday on CNN's Democratic presidential town hall, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States was "not only shameful and offensive," but also "dangerous."

The new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Budget and Economic Outlook is out today. The entire document is 226 pages long, plus an Excel sheet full of useful charts. It:s well worth a read, but I wanted to pull out perhaps the most important table in the whole document. It's in Appendix B, Table 1: "How Selected Economic Changes Might Affect CBO's Baseline Budget Projections." Here is the snippet: This chart says that for every 0.1 percentage points of higher economic growth, tax revenues will be $286 billion higher (without raising taxes) and spending will be $41 billion lower over the...

Many smart people thought U.S. oil production would fall off a cliff along with the crash in crude prices.

In reality, it hasn't even come close to killing American production. The U.S. pumped 9.35 million barrels of oil a day in October, according to the latest government statistics available. That's up from 9.13 million barrels in October 2014.

FENNIMORE (WKOW) -- Despite polls showing billionaire businessman Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential race in Iowa, Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) feels Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has an edge in the Hawkeye State. Iowa voters will caucus next Monday night in a race seen as pivotal to Sen. Cruz's chances for the GOP nomination. In past month, Trump has gone from trailing Sen. Cruz to leading him by six points in an average of recent polls. But Gov. Walker agrees with many experts who believe Cruz still has an advantage, because of the ground game he's set up in Iowa...

The Zika virus is likely to spread across nearly all of the Americas, the World Health Organization has warned. The infection, which causes symptoms including mild fever, conjunctivitis and headache, has already been found in 21 countries in the Caribbean, North and South America. It has been linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains and some countries have advised women not to get pregnant. No treatment or vaccine is available. The virus was first detected in 1947 in monkeys in Africa. There have since been small, short-lived outbreaks in people on the continent, parts of Asia and...
