The father of the billionaires Charles G. and David H. Koch helped construct a major oil refinery in Nazi Germany that was personally approved by Adolf Hitler, according to a new history of the Kochs and other wealthy families. The book, "Dark Money," by Jane Mayer, traces the rise of the modern conservative movement through the activism and money of a handful of rich donors: among them Richard Mellon Scaife, an heir to the Mellon banking fortune, and Harry and Lynde Bradley, brothers who became wealthy in part from military contracts but poured millions into anti-government philanthropy. LaVoy Finicum, one of the Citizens for Constitutional Freedom members occupying the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, appeared before the media yesterday to say members of the group will travel 30 miles north to the town on Burns on Friday night for a community meeting. The meeting, at a location yet to be determined, will take place at 7pm and give the group from the refuge an opportunity to explain to the community why they are at the refuge and when they will leave. Finicum also led the media on a tour of buildings at the wildlife refuge to show...

Bought a 2007 Subaru Forester 5K cash, 150K miles earlier this year against my better judgement--hubs was insistent it was reliable. They USED to be reliable. I had an 88 Justy that you couldn't kill. BTW I live in upstate NY with its harsh winters. Seems they now have major engine problems. Something I've found out the hard way. Any recommendations on a new car?

In the commercial that President Obama released prior to his final State of the Union address, Obama said he would tell Congress how "optimistic" he is about America's future. Good. Politicians and the media are at their most dangerous when they try to scare us, telling us disaster is on the way unless we follow, and pay for, their latest schemes to "protect" us. I'm cautiously optimistic about the future, too, if only because our last 200 years have shown that despite politicians' attacks on open markets and individual freedom, people keep getting richer and living longer. When Obama talks...

Ka-ching! Wednesday's Powerball jackpot soared to $1.5 billion as get-rich-quick mania seized America this week. But you don't need to wait for the drawing to know who'll score the royal payoff. The biggest winner of the multistate numbers game is -- drumroll, please -- Uncle Sam. Powerball is a government-sponsored gambling racket in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The feds automatically skim 25 percent off the top of a lump-sum cash award. Additional state withholding taxes vary depending on residency status. Mega-winners are taxed at the highest federal income tax bracket (nearly 40 percent);...

In the spirit of Matthew 23 and Luke 11: ...Woe to you, President Obama, because you have been educated at some of the highest institutions of learning in the world, and have taught constitutional law, yet you neglect true justice, and the love and law of God. You love your legacy so much that you will say almost anything to get your legislation passed. Woe to you President Obama, teacher of constitutional law, you hypocrite! You travel over land and sea seeking solutions to problems that don't exist. Yet, as the real problems of our culture loom large and clear,...

During his annual -- and final -- State of the Union address last night, Obama did not name Republican 2016 candidates, but took clear, implied shots at them nevertheless, particularly front-runner Donald Trump, as he sought to shape the electoral battlefield for his Democrats. Look beyond his presidency, he argued that the country must not allow election-year fear and division to put economic and security progress at risk. "All the talk of America's economic decline is political hot air," Obama said in speech. "So is all the rhetoric you hear about our enemies getting stronger and America getting weaker."

The pension board of the United Methodist Church -- one of the largest Protestant denominations in the United States, with more than seven million members -- has placed five Israeli banks on a list of companies that it will not invest in for human rights reasons, the board said in a statement on Tuesday. It appeared to be the first time that a pension fund of a large American church had taken such a step regarding the Israeli banks, which help finance settlement construction in what most of the world considers illegally occupied Palestinian territories. Wine being prepared for export...

Chelsea Clinton made her way around New Hampshire today in attempt to convince voters that they should support her mother, Hillary Clinton, as the next president. Bernie Sanders, Clinton's chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, is practically tied with Clinton in voter polls. He now leads Clinton by a slim margin in Iowa for the first time.Until now, Chelsea Clinton has shied away from directly naming Sanders in her speeches. She took a shot at the Vermont senator when asked by a young voter how to best galvanize young Americans, who are excited about Sanders' candidacy. The youngest Clinton...

Hillary's Benghazi Stand-Down Order Exposed Benghazi film unlocks the cover-up. January 13, 2016 Kenneth R. Timmerman A preview by Benghazi security officer Kris "Tanto" Paronto of 13 Hours, the block-buster Michael Bay film that premieres on Thursday, raises dramatic new questions about the refusal by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to authorize a military rescue of the besieged U.S. diplomatic facility and the nearby CIA Annex on Sept 11-12, 2012. In a presentation at a conference organized by the Maryland Citizen Action Network last weekend, Paronto revealed that two AC-130H "Spectre" gunships were "on call" that night, both within...

Most of the top Linux distributions are of the "easier to use" variety. Some observers might dispute this, but the fact is that most people not working in IT or software development will gravitate toward the easiest experience when it comes to Linux. In this article, I'll share my top picks for best Linux distro for newcomers. These selections are chosen based on their ease of use, not their potential for "learning Linux." I hope to put to bed once and for all that myth that all who use Linux need to have a strong familiarity with how Linux works. After...

Iran has released two United States Navy patrol boats and 10 crew members who were described as "trespassing" in Iranian waters near a major naval base, state news media reported on Wednesday. The Pentagon and the State Department said that one of the boats had experienced mechanical problems en route to Bahrain from Kuwait on a routine mission on Tuesday, and the Iranians appeared to have accepted that explanation.

Economics: To the many reasons for investor jitters and stocks' bad start we can probably add the dumbbell ideas coming from one of the leading presidential candidates. In recent days and weeks, the Democratic nominee in waiting, Hillary Clinton, has said that she supports a 4% income-tax "surcharge" on millionaires, higher taxes on capital gains, "exit taxes" on corporations that move from the U.S. and other limits on investment and business that would have a devastating effect on capital markets and individual wealth. Is it any wonder that markets are suffering from dyspepsia? Clinton seems to think, along with others...

State Of The Union: After seven years in the White House, how does one measure Barack Obama's success as president? How about by the standards he set for himself in his first State of the Union address? Obama gave his eighth and final SOTU address after we went to press. But we're on safe ground predicting that he spent a good chunk of it praising himself. I saved the country from a second Great Depression! Saved the American auto industry! Extended health insurance to 19 million people! Took on climate change. Made the world a safer place! Those are all...
