A 5-year-old Pennsylvania girl who told another girl she was going to shoot her with a pink Hello Kitty toy gun that blows soapy bubbles has been suspended from kindergarten. Her family has hired an attorney to fight the punishment, which initially was 10 days for issuing a 'terroristic threat.' But her punishment was reduced to two days after her mother met with school officials and had the incident dropped to 'threatening to harm another student,' which apparently carries a lesser punishment.

As a society, our first task must be to care for our children -- to shield them from harm and give them the tools they need not only to pursue their dreams, but to help build this country. That is how we will be judged. And in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, it's clear we have a long way to go. That's why, last month, I asked Vice President Biden to lead an effort to come up with concrete steps we can take right now to keep our kids safe, help prevent mass shootings, and reduce the broader...

The annual Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg is banning assault weapons this year. Reed Exhibitions puts on the annual event and made the decision not to include tactical rifles less than a month before the show, much to the chagrin of those who plan to attend. “I think a man ought to be able to have what he wants. If he want an assault rifle for some reason, to hunt with or just target shoot or whatever, I think he should have it without a whole lot of hassle,” said Dennis Hackler, a gun owner. Hackler said heading...

The head of the Bayit Yehudi, Naftali Bennett, defended the #14 man on the party's Knesset list, Jeremy Gimpel, who came under attack as an extremist in TV's leftist Channel 2 at week's end. "I am proud of Jeremy Gimpel and of my entire list," Bennett told Channel 2's Dana Weiss in a Saturday night interview. The channel's Friday night newscast, a special weekly edition which sums up the week's events, featured an attack on Gimpel by ultra-leftist pundit Amnon Abramovich. Abramovich showed viewers a Youtube video of Gimpel speaking before a Christian group and raising the theoretical possibility that...

The 50-50 joint venture by affiliates of Enbridge and Enterprise Products Partners has completed a reversal of 500 miles of the Seaway system, increasing the flow between Cushing, Okla., and Houston to 400,000 barrels per day from 150,000 bpd. Today was a beautiful sunny day in Central PA. I started my day by going to Mechanicsburg Sportsmen Association to do a little shooting. It was a great time and like always the people at MSA were friendly. A couple of other members and I helped a new member to learn to shoot. It was the first time she went shooting. I have to say she has guts. She is single and doesn't know anyone in the area since she recently moved her. She went to the range with the intent of teaching herself. She got a lot more from...

... After fifth grade, he found, student assessment becomes a matter of “a teacher’s subjective assessment of the student’s performance,” and is further removed from the guidance of objective test results. Teachers, he says, tend to assess students on non-cognitive, “socio-emotional skills.” This has had a significant impact on boys’ later achievement because, while objective test scores are important, it is teacher-assigned grades that determine a child’s future with class placement, high school graduation and college admissibility. Eliminating the factor of “non-cognitive skills…almost eliminates the estimated gender gap in reading grades,” Cornwell found. He said he found it “surprising” that...

In a startling follow-up to his spate of new gun laws which were passed last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced his new 'Gun-Snitch' program in which both adults and children will have a chance to turn in the name or names of potentially violent gun criminals for money. Cuomo announced a new 1-800 number (1-800-RAT-CALL) which you can call 24/7 to provide the New York State Police with the name and address of any person you know has a gun. Children are encouraged to call and accuse their parents as well as other family members and friends....

SPANISH house prices could drop by a further 50% and may not recover for the next 15 years, according to experts. The Costa del Sol is among the worst affected areas in the country, with the total fall in values predicted to be as much as 75% in some areas. There are 800,000 used homes on the Spanish property market, with another 300,000 having been foreclosed by the banks and a further 150,000 in foreclosure proceedings. What’s more, developers have 700,000 completed units not on the market and another 250,000 still under construction. “The market is broken,” said Fernando Rodriguez...

The Bread of Life Mission, which has served the homeless community in Pioneer Square for more than 70 years, said the city has directed them to stop feeding the hungry in downtown parks. On the third Saturday of every month for the past three years, volunteers for the mission have handed out meals at places such as City Hall Park. The offering was in addition to the three meals a day they serve inside their building at 97 South Main Street. "It was a service we were offering free of charge to be a blessing to the homeless," said Executive...

I’m a pretty big fan of irony and juxtaposition. It doesn’t get any better than a pro-gun rally at the Ohio Statehouse during the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Weekend. Guns Across America is doing just that in several state capitols tomorrow. According to the Facebook event page for Ohio, the group’s intent is to have a peaceful demonstration to stop any and all future gun control legislation. Because nothing says peaceful demonstration like walking around downtown Columbus with an assault weapon strapped to your back. The organizers of the group are being very careful about public perception. There are...

President Obama’s motorcade sported “Taxation Without Representation” license plates for the first time on Saturday. As part of the National Day of Service kicking of a weekend of inaugural events, the president has traveled to the Burrville Elementary School in Northeast Washington to participate in a City Year service project. Three vans in Obama’s motorcade were outfitted with the unique D.C. license plates as the president traveled to the school, according to a White House pool reporter. The reporter said other vehicles in the motorcade had Maryland, Virginia or U.S. government plates. The White House decision earlier this week to...
