I've had doubts about Chief Justice John Roberts for a couple of years now -- doubts that were unfortunately confirmed Thursday by his decision upholding ObamaCare. In October 2010, Canisius College in Buffalo, NY hosted Chief Justice Roberts as part of the Raichle Lecture Series. The Raichle Lectures are sponsored by the college's pre-law center, and the college deserves credit for booking some real heavy hitters -- past guests have included Supreme Court Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, and O'Connor, and other notable figures like Rudy Giuliani. I was excited about the opportunity to see the head of one of the three...

1) Consume in small, frequent amounts. Between 20-200mg per hour may be an optimal dose for cognitive function. 2) Play to your cognitive strengths while wired. Caffeine may increase the speed with which you work, may decrease attentional lapses, and may even benefit recall - but is less likely to benefit more complex cognitive functions, and may even hurt others. Plan accordingly (and preferably prior to consuming caffeine!) 3) Play to caffeine's strengths. Caffeine's effects can be maximized or minimized depending on what else is in your system at the time. (Definitely add sugar. Grapefruit juice may prolong the effects...

Fireworks are a high point for any Independence Day celebration, but pets can become distressed by the additional noise and commotion. In fact, animal shelters across the nation are accustomed to receiving “July 4th” dogs—dogs who run off during the fireworks celebration and are rescued by animal control officers or good samaritans. "Pets are family members, and it’s understandable that we want to include them in our holiday plans," said Jeff Ingerson, Animal Control Officer. "However, most pets will be more comfortable staying at home. Spare your furry friends the stress of fireworks, crowds and fanfare on the Fourth of...

The Obama Administration’s Department of Justice informed House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) that it would not honor any request for enforcement of it’s finding that Attorney General Eric Holder is in contempt of Congress for his refusal to hand over copies of DOJ correspondence. “The President’s declaration of Executive Privilege has already ruled that Congress is not entitled to these documents,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole asserted. “This preemptively exonerates Attorney General Holder and vetoes any action Mr. Boehner might contemplate taking in his effort to obtain this information.” Cole called Congress’ efforts to secure DOJ correspondence on Operation Fast...

Investors who find Treasury yields too meager can choose from a long menu of meatier government bond yields abroad. But finding the right combination of risk and return is getting trickier. Most investors hold a sizable chunk of government debt in their bond portfolios, for safety more than the income the bonds generate. Not long ago, that slice consisted of one kind of bond: U.S. Treasurys. But the relationship between yields and risk in government bonds has taken an odd turn. As a result, even cautious investors should consider branching out from the U.S. to places like Australia and Mexico....

I'd appreciate suggestions for online streaming TV and movie providers (other than biggies like Netflix or those from specific cable systems). I've watched a Hulu at times and I think it is legit, but Google turns up a lot of garbage that really looks questionable, or sites that ask for personal information that feel like scams. I'm not a huge TV watcher so it's not worth inviting viruses and malware or putting up with time limits and poor quality feeds. I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee for a service or site that would allow me to watch classic TV...

Dennis Miller, with his typical comic wit, once asked me, “Why can’t Muslim terrorists be just like us, wanting to live and just get laid”? I responded by saying, “Are you kidding me? They die to get laid.” Take Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, the Muslim terrorist who was recently convicted for acquiring materials to build weapons of mass destruction, intended to destroy reservoirs and dams in Colorado and California, nuclear power plants, nightclubs in Dallas and even the home of former President George W. Bush. Outwardly, Khalid was a lover, not a savage. “I met my language partner Sarah Rice Stender...

In addition to having the title of Assistant Chef, he’s also a White House Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives - a job that has put him in the spotlight as a spokesperson and earned him a spot on People Magazines 100 Most Beautiful People and Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business 2011. “This is now our 4th season,” Kass says. “We have a lot of corn. All of the summer stuff. The cucumbers are going bananas. We have beans and squash and lots of tomatoes. We have lots of potatoes, sweet potatoes. The strawberries are coming. The...

Justice Roberts` holding that Obamacare`s individual mandate is constitutional as a tax is not only an incoherent stretching of Congress` taxing authority, but defies the very limits of Congress` delegated powers which were carefully enumerated in our Constitution and subjoined to Art. I, § 8, cl.1 by our Founding Fathers ___ Obamacare being absent in the enumeration! The Roberts ruling is immediately exposed for its absurdity when it is analyzed. First, let us confirm beyond the shadow of doubt that Congress` taxing powers under imposts, duties, excises and direct taxes, whatever they may be, are limited by other provisions in...

Con Edison has authorized a strike if necessary; its contract expires at midnight Saturday. The second heat wave of the summer will again test the power grid in our area just as a deadline comes for a possible Con Edison strike. Temperatures reached 98 degrees at LaGuardia Airport Friday, while Newark, N.J. saw 97 and Central Park hit 93. A mix of sun and clouds continues Saturday and temperatures will linger in the muggy low- to mid-90s. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon. Con Edison and its workers are in the middle of contract negotiations, with the...

Democratic convention changes renew concerns about financial risk to backersBy Joseph Weber Published June 30, 2012 FoxNews.com The decision this week by the host committee of the Democratic National Convention to scrap a major event has sparked new concerns about the committee’s financial situation -- including a $10 million line of credit and a utility company’s connection to the deal. Stimulus-backed Duke Energy Corp. last year agreed to guarantee the line of credit for the party affair. This decision was a big help for the organizers, as the credit line was required by the Democratic National Committee. But it also...

While we were all debating the cost to our liberty due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), we were ignoring the cost to our pockets. If there ever was a reason for bipartisan rage about this law, it should be on the twenty - yes, twenty - hidden new taxes of this law. Making matters even more relevant is that seven of these taxes are levied on all citizens regardless of income. Hence, Mr. Obama’s promise not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $250,000 is just another falsehood associated with this legislation.

The story of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s severely diminished prospects for becoming a real force in Chicago politics essentially begins and ends at 312, a restaurant across the street from City Hall. That’s where the Democratic congressman and a top aide sat at a sidewalk table on a sunny day in August 2005. They barely touched their lunches, working their cellphones for the latest news on then-Mayor Richard M. Daley’s announcement that federal agents had questioned him. Jackson ultimately balked at challenging Daley, but a little more than three years later, he was at 312 again. This time, the...

"Barclays agreed to pay a whopping $453million in fines to the U.S. Justice Department and the UK's Financial Services Authority."

Efforts to postpone state cigarette taxes for roll-your-own cigarettes have failed. Smokers cannot legally buy roll-your-own cigarettes unless the carton has a state tax stamp, starting Sunday. The Washington State Supreme Court issued a stay on the Franklin County Superior Court preliminary injunction Friday. And Dana Henne of Pasco, a roll-your-own cigarette consumer; Gary Alexander of Sammamish, owner of 1/2 Price Smokes stores in Tacoma and Kennewick; and RYO Machine LLC, an Ohio-based manufacturer with about 2,000 of the machines nationwide, did not post the $200,000 bond or security required for the preliminary injunction to go into effect. If tax...

SCIENTISTS have captured the moment a giant solar flare from a distant star scorched one of its orbiting planets, blasting the upper atmosphere away. NASA's Swift Telescope detected a huge X-ray flare from the star 63 light years from Earth and then the Hubble recorded the pictures as it ripped into an orbiting gas giant known as "HD 189733b". While the planet managed to survive the experience, scientists calculated it received three million times as many X-rays as Earth receives during a solar flare. At least 900 tonnes of gas was ejected from the planet's atmosphere per second at a...

Pluto and its partner moon Charon are helping scientists figure out where to look for planets that circle two parent stars. The frozen duo, which orbits about 40 times as far away from the sun as Earth, balance a brood of at least three smaller moons, Nix, Hydra and a newly discovered body, designated P4, that flies between the two. The whole system takes up less room than the span between Earth and our moon, providing a delicate orbital ballet that has implications for finding planets around dual-star systems beyond the solar system. New Horizons probe will test computer simulations...

First Amendment: The bizarre ObamaCare decision leaves unresolved the separate issue of whether government can define what a church is and what it can do. Will the courts also redefine the "free exercise" of religion? For now, ObamaCare remains largely intact and so does its attempt to rewrite the First Amendment by prohibiting the free exercise of religion through its mandate that religious institutions provide contraceptive coverage in violation of their church teachings and religious consciences. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty says it will move forward with litigation challenging a requirement from the federal health care law that employers...
