Barack Obama health care speech live blog Toby Harnden September 10th, 2009 9.02pm Ends bang on 9pm with very resounding finish. Presents health care reform as a moral imperative and test of America’s character. His argument for liberalism and the goodness of government. This is what speech will be remembered for rather than the specifics. “We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it. I still believe we can act even when it’s hard. I still believe we can replace acrimony with civility, and gridlock with progress. I still believe we can do great things,...

“The new President has been bruised along the way as poll numbers are falling and he has seen his message hijacked as town meetings have exploded with wild and false rumors of 'death panels' deciding when a human life should end,” Brian Williams declared at the top of Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, in adopting as fact the liberal presumption that conservatives, not liberals, are guilty of the misrepresentations. In advance of President Obama's prime time speech before Congress to push his health care agenda, Williams began his September 9 newscast for the Eastern and Central time zones:

When I was a kid, I loved the show Family Ties. In one episode, the Keaton's got involved in an impassioned town debate over the issue of book banning. The episode climaxed with a town hall debate in which citizens spoke their mind. One by one, speakers spoke, and the father, Steven Keaton, kept finding that people were taking his points. By the time it was his turn, all his points had been made. So, Steven stood up and said, "I think now is a good time for a round up of what we heard tonight". That's how I felt...

AFP: President Barack Obama Wednesday demanded Congress act now on health reform, warning more Americans would die if Washington again does nothing to expand care and cut the costs of insurance. PRESIDENT OBAMA: Everyone in this room knows what will happen if we do nothing. Our deficit will grow. More families will go bankrupt. More businesses will close. More Americans will lose their coverage when they are sick and need it most. And more will die as a result. We know these things to be true.

Sept. 9, 2009 | What a difference a month makes! When my last controversial column posted on Salon in the second week of August, most Democrats seemed frozen in suspended animation, not daring to criticize the Obama administration's bungling of healthcare reform lest it give aid and comfort to the GOP. Well, that ice dam sure broke with a roar. Dissident Democrats found their voices, and by late August even the liberal lemmings of the mainstream media, from CBS to CNN, had dramatically altered their tone of reportage, from priggish disdain of the town hall insurgency to frank admission of...

LOS ANGELES – Ellen DeGeneres is dancing her way onto "American Idol," replacing Paula Abdul as the show's fourth judge. In a Wednesday release from Fox and the show's producers, DeGeneres described herself as a longtime fan of the hit singing contest. Abdul, who announced she was quitting the show amid a contract dispute, had been replaced by a succession of guest judges as "American Idol" started next season's auditions. DeGeneres, host of a daytime talk show, wasn't among them. She will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season starting in January.

Hussein told senior citizens "trust me". (They can trust these deviants to trust them - to handle them like they do their millions of unwanted babies.) Judges Greer and Whitemoore paved the way in the Terri Schiavo case. It is now permissible to kill conscious people and cover it up with a euphemism. I wrote about that a few years back at Table Of Wisdom .com in a column titled “Greer & Whitemoore Saved Social Security”. With many seniors receiving more in benefits than they ever paid into SS - while the country is going bankrupt from the program -...

A Republican state lawmaker from Southern California resigned Wednesday amid growing outrage over a videotape that caught him bragging in graphic detail about having sex with a female lobbyist and another woman. Assemblyman Mike Duvall, whose votes on family-oriented legislation received high marks from conservative groups, said in a statement the furor over his comments had begun to divert attention from the work his fellow lawmakers were trying to finish during the final week of their session. Duvall is married and has two adult children.

With the massive increases in federal spending, inflation is one of the risks that await us. To protect us from the political demagoguery that will accompany that inflation, let's now decide what is and what is not inflation. One price or several prices rising is not inflation. Increases in money supply are what constitute inflation, and a general rise in prices is the symptom. As the late Nobel laureate professor Milton Friedman said, "Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon, in the sense that it cannot occur without a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in...

NEW YORK — The New York Police Department revised a highly touted report on the threat of homegrown terrorism in response to complaints that it was an insult to law-abiding, observant Muslims. A coalition of Muslim groups on Wednesday applauded the two-page clarification tucked into "Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat" — a study first circulated in law enforcement circles and on the Internet in 2007. The new wording says the NYPD "understands that it is a tiny minority of Muslims who subscribe to al-Qaida's ideology of war and terror." The clarification also calls the city's Muslim community "our...

Item: "President Obama and top Democratic congressional leaders are pushing hard for health care bills that would result in federal government funding of abortion on demand!" warns the National Right-to-Life Committee. Item: A television ad broadcast by the Family Research Council shows an older couple — Harry and Louise on Medicare — sitting at their kitchen table and worrying about how to afford a needed operation. "They won't pay for my surgery, but we're forced to pay for abortions," says the older man. Item: House Minority Leader John Boehner asserts that House Democrats' health bill "will result in federally mandated...

Until the self-avowed Communist and 9/11 conspiracy loon Van Jones actually resigned as an Obama administration czar in the deep of night during the Labor Day weekend, The New York Times and other mainstream media pretended that he did not exist. Bernie Goldberg, the media commentator for Fox News, offered two good explanations on the O'Reilly Factor last night for this example of journalistic malpractice, aside from the usual, day-to-day left-wing media bias. The first was that the media were just trying to protect their man -- Barack Obama. Nothing that could seriously undermine the Anointed One's mission to save...
