Enzi is one of the GOP leaders in the negotiations, and Gibbs says his recent comments indicate the Republicans are stepping away from bipartisanship . . . . . (Watch Video)

Chad Harris is an entrepeneur. As such, health insurance was always expensive for him because he never had group insurance through an employer. (after all he's his own employer) It could cost well over a $1000 monthly for his family. One day he was on a business trip when his wife was discussing the difficulties of getting health insurance with her doctor Dr. Sam Sannoufi, MD. Her doctor came up with an idea. The doctor would provide a menu of basic medical care for her and her family for $599 for the whole year and the whole family. It would...

Until 1929, Jews had lived in the city for Three Millennia. - August 27, 2009 - Wall Street Journal - "....Yet another wrenching exile and return, now rarely remembered, occurred 80 years ago this week. On Aug. 23-24, 1929, the Jewish community of Hebron was exiled following a horrific pogrom. The tragedy is known as Tarpat, an acronym for its date in the Hebrew calendar. - Until 1929, Jews had lived in Hebron for three millennia. There, according to Jewish tradition, Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah to bury Sarah. It was the first parcel of land owned by the...

AMD's 'Bulldozer' core design will incorporate some kind of simultaneous multithreading (SMT) technology, it has emerged. But it's not going to be like Intel's HyperThreading the smaller chip maker has insisted. This week, AMD showed off its 'Magny Cours' chip architecture, a design that crams in six of the cores found on its 'Istanbul' chips, each with 512KB of their own L2 cache and 6MB of shared L3 cache. An architecture roadmap revealed at the Hot Chips conference shows the 45nm processor - out next year in its initial form - will soon evolve into a 12-core beast with 12MB...

CHICAGO (AP) — Ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says in a new book that White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel wanted his help in arranging to leave the Obama administration after two years to reclaim his seat in Congress. Blagojevich writes in "The Governor" that Emanuel spoke with him about whether it was possible to appoint a "placeholder" to the congressional seat Emanuel was giving up so that he could win back the seat in 2010 and continue his efforts to become speaker some day.

More thought-barf from HuffPo, natch. All the Dead Teddy attention in Massachusetts must have the two time winner of "Who Wants To Marry A Multi-Millionaire" in a mood for some attention-getting antics. The truth is that the threat we face is not an abstract concern for the future. It is already upon us and its effects are being felt worldwide, right now. Scientists project that the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer of 2013. Not in 2050, but four years from now. "Danger, Will Robinson! Floaty the Polar Bear will be here in four years!" The "scientists" have been...

My worst fears about national health care have now been realized.

One rule of thumb I generally observe while traveling abroad: Always know what something is before putting it in your mouth. Recently, I broke that rule--and ended up regretting it. I ate whale meat. I didn't mean to. It just sort of happened during an otherwise routine company enkai--office party--at a hole-in-the-wall izakaya called Andy's Shin Hinomoto under the Yurakucho railroad tracks in central Tokyo. I ordered a beer and sat down next to my co-workers, just as the waitress was bringing out plates of food: generous cuts of sashimi, deep-fried chicken nuggets, a sautéed mushroom salad and--what the heck...

Never before in the two hundred and thirty three year history of the Republic have we faced as great a threat to our individual freedoms as that which is Obama. He has sought not only to co-opt a huge segment of the economic capacity of this nation through the government seizure of the banking and automotive industry, but now he and his fellow leaches on the national wealth seek to annex an even larger segment of the nation’s identity. The proposed government takeover of the health care system represents a direct threat to the individual sovereignty of each and every...

CALGARY -- China has used its significant financial firepower to once again wiggle its way into Canada's oil sands, home to the largest source of crude outside Saudi Arabia. PetroChina International Investment Company Ltd. has struck a deal to buy a 60% working interest in Athabasca Oil Sands Corp.'s MacKay River and Dover oil sands projects for $1.9-billion, as well as "certain financing arrangements" for AOSC. "Oil sands projects are very capital-intensive long-term investments and difficult to fully finance in the traditional equity market," said Bill Gallacher, AOSC's chairman said in a statement. "AOSC therefore decided to look for joint...

A story in the Independent on Sunday suggests that while the Obama administration was opposed to the release of the convicted mass murderer, it made clear that it was open to compromise - such as house arrest in Scotland - rather than implacably opposed, period. "US officials had “very reluctantly” backed a proposal to move Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi from Greenock Prison into some kind of high-security accommodation elsewhere in Scotland, senior government sources on both sides of the Atlantic confirmed."

NYC Pay Toilet Project Is Slow Going NEW YORK (CBS) ― Nineteen months after New York City trumpeted automated public toilets, only two are up and running. Last summer, the city promised four more by the end of 2008. The eventual goal is 20. The New York Times says the two pioneer potties — in Corona, Queens, and Manhattan's Madison Square Park — have proved popular. Users pay 25 cents. A machine dispenses toilet paper, and the contraption cleans itself with disinfectant after each use. David Yagnesak, vice president for operations at Cemusa North America, says that besides plumbing hookups,...

Eleno Oviedo can tell you a thing or two about torture. Oviedo spent 26 years as a political prisoner in Cuba’s hellish prisons. As Oviedo recalled in an interview with this columnist, he and other Cuban prisoners of conscience suffered beatings, extreme temperatures and isolation with very little food or medical care. They received threats of violence. And the Cuban authorities constitute a credible threat. Beatings were routine, and Oviedo said he heard “more than 300 times prisoners being executed” by firing squad. Many of the prisoners cried “Viva Cristo Rey,” as a final act of defiance and profession of...
