Here is the story of what happened. Last night, my wife was driving to Wal-Mart to get another vacuum cleaner, ours had died on us. I asked her to pick up some beer on the way home. Well driving home she had it in the front seat. There was a DUI traffic stop on her way home. The cops pulled her to the side and said that she needed to put the beer in the trunk and that is her warning or she would get a ticket. This sounds so stupid to me. Does anyone know if this is true...

HUNDREDS of Borneo tribes men armed with blowpipes are blockading roads in protest against companies they accuse of destroying their rainforests to grow oil palms for “green” biofuel, cooking oil, soap and margarine. The confrontation is taking place in the endangered forests of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, where members of the Penan tribe have existed for centuries as nomadic hunter-gatherers living on fish, wild animals and plants. “This is a last resort,” said See Chee How, a lawyer fighting land rights cases for indigenous people. “There have been allegations of rape by loggers, the rivers are being polluted and...

Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce,` and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given...
  • Diamond Principal of Healthcare

Diamond Principal of Healthcare In the gemological world, the diamond is defined by the four C’s - cut, clarity, color, and caret weight. It is the hardest material known to man. For the sake of argument, let’s change this up a bit and redefine the four C’s as compassion, courage, conviction, and common sense. When applied to the world of healthcare, here also you will find some of the hardest moral decisions known to man. Let’s consider three very old teaching fables: 1) the Lifeboat Theory, 2) the Serenity Prayer, and 3) an Engineer’s Rules of Problem Solving. You will...

Al Gore and Bill Clinton — ghosts of Democratic victories past who are increasingly showing up to buck up the faithful as President Obama goes through his first real trials in office — were the star guests at the Tennessee Democratic Party’s annual Jackson Day dinner. . . Clinton, who made a bit of political history by actually arriving early for this event, gave a typically rambling, discursive lecture on, among other things, the history of American politics since 1968 and the history of health care reform from 1994 on, accompanied by a corrective lesson explaining how the failure of...

JERUSALEM – Just days before his White House appointment, Van Jones, Obama's environmental adviser, used a forum at a major youth convention to push for what can easily be interpreted as a communist or socialist agenda. As WND previously reported, Van Jones, special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation to the White House Council on Environmental Quality, is an admitted black nationalist and radical communist. Jones' appointment was announced on March 10. Two weeks before he started his White House job, however, Jones delivered the keynote address at Power Shift '09, which was billed as the largest youth summit...

Health Care for Americans Now (HCAN) an Acorn affiliated group had scheduled a protest today at St. Anthony's Hospital supporting Obamacare. About ten Tea Party Movement Patriots went to counter protest. The other side never showed up. We spent about an hour and a half waving flags, showing our signs, waving to passerbys, and generally had a great time. We had decided that we have gotten so much bad press and smears from the left about being unruly mobsters that we should wave and smile and show folks we were regular, friendly people standing up for America. Seemed to work...

THE remains of Flying Officer Michael Herbert and Pilot Officer Robert Carver have arrived on home soil after they set off to fight in Vietnam almost 40 years ago. They were ceremonially received by family, friends and current and former members of 2 Squadron after arriving at the RAAF Base Richmond, northwest of Sydney, at 10.40am today. Their final journey home, aboard a RAAF Hercules transport aircraft, came almost four decades after their Canberra bomber went missing over thick jungle on a hillside in remote Quang Nam province, near the border with Laos

During his interview with Chris Wallace today, former Vice President Dick Cheney was asked about the effect of Attorney General Holder's investigation of the CIA and enhanced interrorgation techniques: Well, you think, for example, in the intelligence arena. We ask those people to do some very difficult things. Sometimes, that put their own lives at risk. They do so at the direction of the president, and they do so with the -- in this case, we had specific legal authority from the Justice Department. Find the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF-pRo_Z2MEAs Madison stated in Federalist No. 45: Powers delegated to the Federal government are few and definedPowers remaining in the State governments are numerous and indefinite Too many in representatives (and citizens) do not understand the authority granted unto congress; this authority is defined in the Constitution with the 18 enumerated powers (Article 1 Section 8). Really starting at the beginning of the 1900s legislators, presidents, bureaucrats, and justices have bastardized the meaning, intent, and interpretation...

I was thinking about Keith Hennessey’s post of Thursday on the implications of the OMB forecast on unemployment. The OMB forecast says that in the fourth quarter of 2010, the unemployment rate will be 9.7%. Inspired by Hennessey’s work, I decided to write a small spreadsheet. My goal: what does the forecast say about the number of jobs created? Here’s a screen cap of the spreadsheet: Let me explain each column. The source of this data is the Current Population Survey from BLS. Data projected is italicized. The two bold numbers for unemployment rates are the projections from the OMB...

Discussions on the design of the new system are already underway. The United Nations' Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System -- a body I chaired and which included economists, former and current government officials, financial sector participants, central bankers, and business leaders from Asia, Europe, the United States, Africa, and Latin America -- has argued that a new global reserve currency system may be the most important reform to ensure the long-term health of the world's economy; it also suggested how to design an orderly transition from the dollar-based system. In its interim report...

The U.S. Department of Health is proposing a major reduction in reimbursement for cancer treatments. Recently the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced they're planning on cutting reimbursement rates for radiation cancer treatment -- in some cases by 44 percent. "The radiation oncology community was shocked," said Dr. Robert Miller with Wellspring Oncology Cancer Center. "At the time our cost have gone up higher and higher, they were going to cut the reimbursement by almost in half." Last year Wellspring spent more than $2 million to by a TomoTherapy machine. It targets only cancer cells while leaving healthy cells...

Remnants of Iraq Air Force Are FoundBy ROD NORDLAND Published: August 30, 2009 BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials have discovered that they may have a real air force, after all. The Defense Ministry revealed Sunday that it had recently learned that Iraq owns 19 MIG-21 and MIG-23 jet fighters, which are in storage in Serbia. Ministry officials are negotiating with the Serbs to restore and return the aircraft. The Serbian government has tentatively promised to make two of the aircraft available “for immediate use,” according to a news release from the ministry. The rest would be restored on a rush basis,...
