When I was small and my dad was so sick and couldn't work, the government gave us food stamps and commodity cheese. When you are hungry, giving back a little freedom didn't seem like much. The government gave me a free education through high school and they only asked a pinch of freedom in return. I got the best end of that bargain.I let the government finance my college education so I could be a productive member of society. They even gave money to the school I went to so I didn't have to borrow so much. I gave some freedom ...

HATCH SUBJECT OF JUDICIAL WATCH LAWSUITS CONCERNING HIS INVOLVEMENT IN BCCI AND MICROSOFT CASES (Washington, D.C.) Senator Orrin Hatch, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has steadfastly refused to call for the resignation of Attorney General Janet Reno, claiming that he doesn't like to "ruin people's careers" and "the decision should be made by the President." In a recent Republican Party Presidential debate in Arizona, Senator Hatch also staunchly defended the Reno Justice Department's decision and case to break up Microsoft. Senator Hatch's defense of Attorney General Reno and his attacks on Microsoft are, unfortunately, easily explained, and are the ...

A 13-year-old named Jesse Dirkhising was killed on Sept. 26 in Rogers, Ark. Why didn't you know that? The police affidavit describing the circumstances of Jesse's death is stomach-turning. Rather than sicken you, let me quote instead from the much less graphic story that moved on the national wire of the Associated Press. ''According to police, Davis Carpenter Jr., 38, and Joshua Brown, 22, drugged and blindfolded Jesse Dirkhising, gagged him with underwear, and strapped him to a mattress face-down with duct tape and belts. Then the boy was repeatedly raped and sodomized with various objects before he suffocated ...

New York Press - New York's Premier Alternative Newspaper. Arts, Eats, Music, Food, Movies and Opinion New York Press Godfrey Cheshire Film vol 12 no 49 American Holocaust American Holocaust What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever seen? When I was a kid, the low-budget nuclear-horror drama Panic in the Year Zero took the prize; it gave me nightmares for weeks. In the 80s, the 10-hour expanse of Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah proved as haunting as it was horrifying; its images are with me still. But I have to say, now, that the single most disturbing movie I’ve ever ...

Monday's Republican presidential debate in Phoenix was nothing to write home about, with a few notable exceptions that struck at some key issues and policy differences that divide the GOP and voters in general. By its very nature, a debate between a large field of candidates, four of whom (Gary Bauer, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, Steve Forbes and Alan Keyes) stand no chance of being nominated, let alone being elected, is far too unwieldy to explore substantive issues with the level of detail that they deserve. Still, marginal candidates serve an important purpose in a competitive campaign because they ...

SERBIAN UNITY CONGRESS December 8, 1999 The Honorable Trent Lott, Majority Leader, United States Senate, Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Senator Lott: The release on December 6, 1999 by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) of two reports on human rights in Kosovo make horrifying reading. Before the NATO campaign the Serbian Unity Congress was in the forefront of reconciliation efforts that, has they been heeded, might have avoided the immense human suffering catalogued so painfully in these reports. The SUC believes that those responsible for crimes committed during the period covered by Part I of the ...

Republican presidential contender George W. Bush ran into the ideal one-person focus group Tuesday afternoon at Bedford Town Hall. "I’m trying to make up my mind between you and Senator McCain. Can you help me?’’ asked Marion Houck, a 41-year-old homemaker and mother of two whose husband liked the Arizona senator when he met him recently. "Obviously, I’m glad I’m in the finals. That’s a good start," Bush shot back playfully. "I’m not going to tear down John McCain. He’s a good man. I think I would be a better leader than Senator McCain. I’ve been in a position of ...

(CBS) In Bettendorf, Iowa, the ground war between Planned Parenthood and its Right to Life opponents has been fierce. Now, however, the dispute has moved to a street called - ironically -- Happy Joe Drive. CBS News Correspondent Jacqueline Adams reports. The five-year battle has not been violent, but metal detectors are on the way and Planned Parenthood officials say they have spent more for security than they used to spend to build a clinic like this. Although it took three federal injunctions to defeat the opposition, leaders are thrilled with Friday's grand opening. "The Quad cities of Iowa ...

Keyes' Electability, The Maryland Record Let's start with this bit of good press, from the Washington Times. From Inside Politics, Washington Times, 2/23/99: Liberals for Keyes? Who was the most impressive speaker at last month's Conservative Political Action Conference in Arlington? Well, according to liberal group People for the American Way, the man who really got the CPAC crowd going was former ambassador Alan Keyes. Mr. Keyes' "ability to propel that crowd into a frenzy was nothing short of remarkable," PFAW reported Sunday in its monthly on-line newsletter "Right-Wing Watch." PFAW reported that Mr. Keyes -- who sought the GOP ...

By Patrick Goodenough CNS London Bureau Chief 09 December, 1999 London (CNSNews.com) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin's belligerent statements in response to Western condemnation of the military campaign in Chechnya should "not be taken very seriously," the European Union's new foreign affairs and defense co-ordinator, Javier Solana, said Thursday. Solana, a former secretary-general of NATO, was reacting to remarks attributed to Yeltsin during the first day of a visit to China, in which he reminded the West - and President Clinton in particular - that Russia was a nuclear power. "Clinton allowed himself to pressurize Russia," a Russian news agency ...
