Airstrip One by Emmanuel Goldstein Antiwar.com December 8, 1999 James Bond and Big Oil. Here we go again. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH I am not by profession a film critic; in fact, I am singularly unsuited for this noble form of parasitism. But the latest James Bond film The World is not Enough, has me frothing at the mouth. I love the technological Gizmos, the unthinking English arrogance, the political incorrectness and the sarcastic humour. I do not mind the silly mistakes, like making the Azeris out as Christians near the beginning of the film. What is annoying me is ...

In theory, the US armed forces can fight two nearly simultaneous major theatre wars The US Department of Defense (DoD) is beginning to prepare for the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). Recent reviews have been based on the idea that the US armed forces are capable of fighting two nearly simultaneous major theatre wars (MTWs). This paradigm is still embraced by the White House and Secretary of Defense William Cohen. In October Cohen told the Senate Armed Services Committee: "If a theatre war had broken out during the Kosovo operation, Gen Hugh Shelton [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff] ...

He got big applause.Alan Keyes, the former State Department official, proclaimed that American taxpayers were worse off than serfs. He got huge cheers.Steve Forbes, who inherited millions, told us we could all be three times richer and more secure in our retirement years if instead of paying Social Security taxes, ...

The Old Cause by Joseph R. Stromberg Antiwar.com December 7 , 1999 Felix Morley: An Old-fashioned Republican FELIX MORLEY (1894-1981) Felix Morley served the cause we now call the Old Right for many years. His thought was a well-wrought synthesis of classical republicanism and classical liberalism. This led people to see him as a "conservative" – but let's not argue labels just now. Born in Pennsylvania in 1894 to English parents, Morley was an essayist, editor of the Washington Post (those were the days!), President of Haverford College (1940-45), radio commentator, and writer of books on politics and foreign ...

A response: To: djf DJF, I disagree wholeheartedly and vociferously with the idea that "the judiciary was meant to be independant". NOWHERE does the Constitution of the United States or it's attendant amendments say that. The judiciary is supposed to render it's verdicts within the bounds of the Constitution and its attendant amendments. It is NOT supposed to create law with such monstrosities as "consent decrees". CONGRESS makes all laws to be approved by the President and held within the bounds of the constitution by the judiciary. When the judiciary OR the administration operate outside the bounds of the ...

Baroness Thatcher last night fiercely attacked plans for a European defence structure, saying it would threaten Nato and could help to create a European superstate. Speaking in New York, the former Prime Minister exploited American concerns about a European defence identity and accused Tony Blair of reversing Britain's traditional hostility towards such ventures. Lady Thatcher was leading a carefully co-ordinated assault by Tory politicians and defence experts on the next stage of EU development, to be confirmed at the Helsinki summit this weekend. Taking the unusual step of attacking British Government policy from abroad, she put the drive towards ...

1702 GMT, 991207 Afghanistan/Russia/Chechnya – Taliban religious authorities urged Dec. 6 all Muslims to pray that Chechens defeat Russian forces. They claimed the world’s major powers and the United Nations are "silent" about the issue. 1429 GMT, 991207 China/Russia/Chechnya/United States – China said Dec. 7 that it backs Russia’s actions in Chechnya and called the issue "purely Russia’s internal affair." Meanwhile, U.S. President Bill Clinton said Dec. 6 that Russia will pay a heavy price for its invasion and he deplored the ultimatum to Grozny that its inhabitants flee or perish. 1413 GMT, 991207 Russia/Chechnya – The Russian migration service ...

Last Thursday the front page of the New York Times, above the fold, reported the following conclusion about the anti-WTO riots in Seattle: "The anarchists were organized. They usually are. My wife and I gained inside knowledge of such things when we observed, at close quarters, the student protest against America's involvement in the Persian Gulf in 1990-91. Complete with a mock cemetery and adjacent tent city, students at Indiana University's main campus in Bloomington spent weeks and months chanting "no blood for oil." We paid frequent visits to tent city and engaged protesting students in conversation, trying to find ...

'THIS report makes sobering reading." Thus begins a 300-page document titled "As Seen, As Told, Part II" that was released Monday by the Kosovo mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. True words. The OSCE report covers human-rights violations that occurred in Kosovo in the months following the June 12 entry into Pristina by the forces of KFOR, the 48,000-strong peacekeeping army that moved into Kosovo under the auspices of the United Nations Interim Administration. In other words, it covers what has happened in Kosovo since the forces for good assumed responsibility. The findings are not a ...

For Discussion Only While other candidates offer carefully rehearsed sound bites, presidential hopeful John McCain is running for president by running his mouth. (AFP) By Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, December 8, 1999; Page C1 EXETER, N.H. – On his campaign bus, where he chats up reporters for hours on end, John McCain was asked the other day how his presidential candidacy is faring. "We're going to take some setbacks, particularly with my proclivity to put my foot in my mouth fairly frequently," he replied. No one gave him an argument. In an age when candidates offer carefully ...

WASHINGTON Chelsea Clinton is set to take over some First Lady duties when her mother jumps into the New York Senate race early next year, well-placed sources said yesterday. The sheltered First Daughter is eager to assume some of Hillary Rodham Clinton's social responsibilities when her busy college schedule permits, said a White House aide who requested anonymity. "She's very anxious to fill in for her mother," the aide said. Hillary Clinton has said she will curtail her White House duties when she moves to New York next month. She plans a formal campaign announcement in January or February. Since ...

Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson told an Oklahoma City audience Tuesday night that President Clinton "has the morals of an alley cat" but is one of the most brilliant politicians ever. "The man is a genius, an absolute genius. He's managed to stymie the Congress," Robertson said Robertson answered questions ranging from his views on endorsing candidates from the pulpit to public financing of church schools during a program sponsored by the Citizens League of Central Oklahoma at the First United Methodist Church. Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, established the Christian Coalition in 1989. Despite some staff changes, ...

Behind the Headlines by Justin Raimondo Antiwar.com December 8, 1999 ALLIED VULTURES PICK AT IRAQ'S BONES Will they never leave Iraq in peace? From Operation Desert Storm, unleashed against Iraq by President George Bush, up to the present moment, the attack on Iraq has been relentless. As I write these words, a report of a U.S. sortie over Iraqi skies and a clash with Iraqi antiaircraft guns is hitting the wires, – yet another skirmish in the continuous low-level warfare that has plagued this unfortunate people for nearly a decade. The other day, they bombed the Al-Zanaziq elementary school, ...

As for Sheehy's Kosovo "scoop," it was likely fed to Sheehy by hillary clinton's operators in order to elevate the political stature of this habitually failed politico-wannabe (at the expense of her feckless husband, I would add). In other words, the first reason for hillary clinton's operators to feed Sheehy this material was to confirm (for the unwashed masses of New York) hillary clinton's putative "co-president" status. A second reason for giving Sheehy what could reasonably be viewed as negative information on hillary clinton--what would certainly be viewed by clinton detractors as negative--was to make Sheehy's hagiographic tome seem ...

Hillary bio could use a fact checker GENE LYONS Comes now pop-psych guru Gail Sheehy with Hillary's Choice, yet another book about the Clinton marriage. Your humble, obedient servant is thanked on the "acknowledgments" page and even given a promotion. (Sheehy calls me a "senior columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette," whatever that means. Shoot, I don't even work for the newspaper. She also calls me a "well-known Arkansas novelist" despite my never having published a single line of fiction.) She did accurately report every unpleasant thing I said. Even so, I had no intention of reading the fool thing, much ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - With the use of off-road vehicles growing swiftly, environmental groups are seeking a ban on the recreational use of ATVs, motorcycles and snowmobiles in national parks and in one-third of the national forests. The off-road vehicles crush plants, harm wildlife, pollute the air and disrupt the calm and quiet of nature, environmentalists said Tuesday. ``Our public lands have essentially become sacrifice zones for motorized cowboys to get their kicks,'' Russell Long, executive director of Bluewater Network, said in a telephone interview from the network's San Francisco headquarters. Bluewater and 66 other groups asked the National Park Service ...

Demonstrating his new "responsible leadership" role, the Rev. Al Sharpton got himself arrested the other night to protest the mayor's homeless policies. The plan was to gather and spend the night in City Hall Park. But the police warned all present that that no permits had been issued, and thus the convocation was illegal. Sharpton and nine others forced the issue by trying to open up a vinyl tent -- against city regulations. Sharpton complained, "We're standing in the middle of municipal opulence, a park they spent $28 million to renovate, at a time they could have been putting money ...

(Bear in mind that this a Canadian article.) Last week's protests against the World Trade Organization were an unqualified triumph for the opponents of global free trade. In the Battle of Seattle, the protesters won a glorious propaganda victory. Seldom has so much misinformation been spread so successfully by so few. Now that the din of battle has subsided, let's take a closer look at a few of the myths propagated in Seattle. The WTO and expanding world trade are impoverishing the Third World. Nonsense. The developing societies that have done best -- Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and now ...

'Dirty' war in Panama Congressional investigators say China to wreak havoc in Central America By Charles Smith © 1999 WorldNetDaily.com Amid widespread concerns and administration denials following President Clinton's surprise admission that Communist China soon will be "running the (Panama) Canal," a previously unreported secret congressional investigation reveals that America will soon face a new "dirty" war in Panama involving China, Cuba and Russia. Speaking on the imminent transfer of the canal to the government of Panama, per the controversial 1978 Carter-Torrijos treaties, Clinton said last week, "I think the Chinese will in fact be bending over backwards to make ...
