PICTURE this: Three successful and respected policy wonks, one a magazine writer, one a consultant, one a think-tanker, all with six-figure incomes, are eating lunch in Washington. They're happily married, love their kids, and have the satisfaction of feeling they have spent their professional lives in consideration of important issues. Inevitably, the subject turns to the Internet boom. And within five minutes, all three of these guys find themselves agreeing that they had taken a wrong turn in their lives. They should never have gone to Washington and worked in and around government. They should never have decided to ...

Russia, France mend fences after Kosovo MOSCOW, July 3 (AFP) - Russia and France made a show of patching up differences Friday over the war in Yugoslavia during a brief visit here by Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who met with several of the major players on the political scene. President Boris Yeltsin at the outset showed he was willing to reconcile, asserting that Russia has a "privileged relationship" with France as he greeted Jospin for talks at the Kremlin. Yeltsin described Jospin, who was making his second official visit to Russia, as the representative of a "friendly country" but he ...

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Taking on one of the most troublesome and contentious issues in American education, school officials and educators around the nation have begun discussing why the academic achievement of black middle-class and upper-income students lags behind whites of comparable socioeconomic status. On some tests, black students from middle-class or wealthier families have done no better than white students who live in poverty. And some especially puzzling data have suggested that at higher achievement levels, the gap between black and white performance is wider than at lower levels. School officials and black education experts are increasingly troubled by the ...

ABC Radio report tonight states that US Secret Service officers will now be required to swear an oath and sign a paper requiring them to keep private things they witness in the course of their duties. The head of the USSS was included in a sound bite about how sad he was that the previous "gentleman's agreement" had to be reduced to paper. Now here's the part that will make you laugh your arse off. ABC Radio's Mark Knowler said it was caused by the flap over 4 USSS agents publishing a book in 1997 about JFK's womanizing. Yeah right. Kennedy was ...

Saturday, July 3, 1999 Published at 17:04 GMT 18:04 UK Passing time with the president. What would you say to him? By UN Correspondent Mark Devenport I didn't sleep very well last Sunday night. I went to bed knowing that the next morning I would have to interview the president of the United States. The venue was the plush home of a rich Democrat supporter the president was visiting in Connecticut. After driving up from New York we set up our cameras and shortly after eleven o'clock we heard the sound of helicopters. Within minutes Bill Clinton was walking towards ...

WALLINGFORD, Connecticut -- Some Connecticut gun enthusiasts are up in arms about a new law signed this week by Gov. John Rowland that gives police the right to seize firearms from the home of a person whom authorities believe may be considering a criminal act. It's considered to be the first law in the nation that allows confiscation of a gun before the owner commits an act of violence. "For them just to come in and blatantly want to take your guns, I believe it's wrong," said one gun owner at the Blue Trail gun range. "The Constitution is ...

Indianapolis Star - July 3, 1999 (From wire reports section.) U.N. APPROVES MEASURES TO SLOW POPULATION GROWTH The U.N. General Assembly adopted new proposals Friday to curb the world’s population growth - including calls for giving women greater access to abortions and adolescents to sex education. The plan was approved despite reservations from a few conservative countries and the Vatican. But women’s groups praised the agreement, calling a giant advance beyond what was agreed to at the 1994 U.N. population conference in Cairo because it compels governments to take action to increase and improve access to reproductive health care. The ...

I always thought the Constitution guaranteed us the right of freedom of religion. Perhaps I am mistaken and cannot read the following words:::: Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Besides other groups, the Christian Coalition has sponsored the disallowal of freedom of religious worship for false religions. Once a precedent is set, will that satisfy those wanting other "false" ...

***STATE TRIES TO COVER FOR CLINTON REMARKS*** DAMAGE CONTROL went into overdrive at the State Department Friday in an attempt to gloss over remarks by President Clinton that would have implied U.S. support for Palestinian refugees returning to their homes in what is now Israel. Clinton, at a news conference with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Washingon Thursday, said he would like to see Palestinians free to live whererever they want. Given a choice many Palestinians would return to their homes or the homes of families in what was then Palestine. Hundreds of thousands fled in 1948, expecting to go ...

U.S. glosses over Clinton remarks on Palestinians WASHINGTON, July 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Friday glossed over remarks by U.S. President Bill Clinton that could have implied U.S. support for Palestinian refugees returning to their homes in what is now Israel. Clinton, at a news conference with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Washington on Thursday, said he would like to see Palestinians free to live wherever they want. Guest Opinion We added oil to the fire in Kosovo So Sandy Grady thinks it's a shame that no one will give Bill Clinton a parade for his victory in Kosovo (column, June 24). Let's take a closer look at Bill's triumph: By the admission of the Clinton administration, the number of Kosovar Albanians killed in 1997 and 1998 was under 2,000. Between January and the start of the bombing, German courts were unable to find evidence of atrocities against Albanians solely because of ethnicity; any violence was related to the low-grade civil war between federal Yugoslavian forces and ...
