The National Mood Has Darkened By David S. Broder Wednesday, June 30, 1999; Page A31 As we approach another Independence Day national birthday, Americans are worried that their country is backsliding. Despite the best economy in most people's memory, a spate of public opinion polling affirms that most voters are deeply concerned about the moral climate and are searching for ways to restore what they see as lost values. Presidential candidates of all stripes are picking up the same signals and trying to respond as best they can. In almost identical phrases, they lament the weakening of family ties and ...

Paris, Wednesday, June 30, 1999As Others Speak Out Against China, Britain Keeps QuietBy Jonathan Mirsky LONDON - Once again we learn that the silence of the lambs is nothing compared to the tabby cat-like behavior of the British lion when the Chinese dragon roars. Recently, there have been four examples. Of these, the most shaming is Britain's decision not to condemn China's ''reinterpretation'' of a controversial ruling by the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong. China's move undermines Hong Kong's rule of law. The court's decision to uphold the right of mainland children with a Hong Kong parent ...

There have been many credible stories about Bill Clinton's use of cocaine: L.D. Brown, Sharlene Wilson, Sally Perdue, his own brother ("he's got a nose like a vacuum cleaner), Dr. Sam Houston and others. Whether he is still using cocaine in the oval office I cannot say. Remember that Clinton told the New York Times about a week before the 1996 election that he never used mind-altering drugs. Drugs, however, go a long way to explaining his pathological behavior. Perhaps an investigative reporter should contact Dr. James Y. Suen who is the Chairman of the department of Otholaryngology (ear, nose, ...

The Clinton Doctrine is still barely more than a glimmer in a proud papa's eye, born as it was in the usual existential fashion of this White House on June 20, in the moment, on television. "Mr. President," asked CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "is there, in your mind, a Clinton Doctrine?" You bet, said legacy-minded he: "While there may well be a great deal of ethnic and religious conflict in the world . . . whether within or beyond the borders of a country, if the world community has the power to stop it, we ought to stop genocide and ...

As Special Counsel Law Expires, Power Will Shift to Reno By Roberto Suro Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, June 30, 1999; Page A06 At midnight tonight, the independent counsel law that empowered Kenneth W. Starr's five-year investigation of President Clinton will expire, and responsibility for investigating the White House will revert to the Justice Department. Under new regulations, Attorney General Janet Reno will exercise considerably more direct control over politically sensitive probes than any of her recent predecessors. The regulations, which the Justice Department released in draft form yesterday, give Reno sole authority to appoint and remove special counsels for ...

Everybody -- let's wake up here. I could very well be posting this incorrectly. With the new format, I'm not sure where to go to post a reply. If so, forgive me. This so-called "deadbeat dads" issue is the reason we are completely losing our privacy. Maybe I'm in the wrong section, but I'm amazed I haven't seen more posts about the tagalong to the welfare reform law that now permits ... no MANDATES ... that all financial information about us from our jobs, banks, etc. be tagged to our SSN's and turned over to Big Brother. All this is ...

GOP Tries To Deny Clinton Credit WASHINGTON (AP) -- Standing by a huge map showing Chicago almost within range of North Korean missiles, Republicans sought Tuesday to remind Americans that legislation for a missile defense shield started as a GOP initiative. With President Clinton expected to sign the bill shortly, Republican leaders gathered outside the Capitol to credit President Reagan with getting the project moving in the early 1980s with his idea of arraying missiles to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles. ``We usher in a new era of American security,'' House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said about the program ...

Forbes Raises Campaign Funds WASHINGTON (AP) -- Publisher Steve Forbes, who spent $37.5 million of his own money for his first run for the White House, wants others to write most of the checks this time. Through $1,000-a-plate dinners and ``Dear friend'' letters seeking as little as $25, the Republican presidential candidate is trying to build a network of contributors to prove his 2000 campaign ``is bigger than one person'' -- and one person's money. Aides say he's already raised $2.5 million. ``It's very important to demonstrate that people are willing to invest their time, their resources, their efforts ...

A VOLUNTARY national identity card system is again being considered by ministers as Jack Straw admitted yesterday that travellers faced a summer of chaos over the backlog of unprocessed passport applications. Home Office officials confirmed last night that the ID card scheme proposed by the last Government was being looked at as a long-term solution to the passport problem. A spokesman said: "We are considering the potential benefits and drawbacks of such a system. Obviously the way an ID card could be used as a passport would be an advantage - under an EU directive, national ID cards are valid ...

A LITTLE less than four years ago, a high-ranking Chinese officer issued a thinly veiled threat to the United States. In a conversation with a recently retired American official, the chief of military intelligence for the People’s Liberation Army declared that China would use any means necessary to prevent Taiwan from becoming an independent state. If the United States interfered, it would find itself in a direct confrontation, perhaps even a nuclear showdown. And this was a test Washington was destined to lose: when push came to shove, the Chinese officer coolly informed his interlocutor, the United States would ...

Posted for information and discussion only; not for commercial use. Sometimes something smells so bad everybody wants to do something about it. Imagine, if you can, these political odd couples: Henry Hyde and Barney Frank, Bob Barr and Bill Delahunt. They got together the other day to work on eradicating a really bad stink. The Hyde/Frank/Barr/Delahunt coalition went after the rape of the Constitution that allows the feds to seize the property of the innocent in the name of making war on drugs. They persuaded the House to strip the feds of this power, which the feds have brazenly ...

*** Kosovo's Lessons Called Ambiguous PAUL MANN/ WASHINGTON Technologically, NATO's air war against Yugoslavia emphasized the immediate need for an EA-6B Prowler replacement, and heralds a future of ever-increasing reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles and precision ordnance like the satellite-guided Joint Direct Attack Munition, military experts say. Strategically, the war has furnished strong evidence of the continuing usefulness of long-range bombers, including the B-2, B-1 and B-52, they agree. But that is not viewed as the harbinger of a new B-3; rather, the valuable role UAVs played in the conflict is considered a major step toward expanded use of ...

[Reader note: This article is so powerful I felt it must be spread across the vast world we call Internet. My personal reaction to it was sheer AWE...both in its amazing factual content and the fact that most of us have never heard most of this in any history class. I would venture to add a subtitle to the already given title - 'THE UNSUNG FOUNDERS' - meaning most of what we know applies to the more well-known men involved, and until this article we never knew how so many humble patriots suffered for their beliefs, and consequently for OUR ...
