Let the Central Government have what the States want to give them. The power of each State would increase. The leverage that individual Congressmen have would increase. The people would actually have their interests served. Washington insider elitists would throw themselves out of windows in despair. Conservatism would trump Socialism in one fell swoop!

Not for commercial use. Solely to be used for the educational purposes of research and open discussion. Saying he supports whistleblowers, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson tried over the weekend to justify the firing of an Energy Department security official who sought to brief Congress on lax security at one of the nation's nuclear facilities. In a report that appeared four weeks ago, that official, Edward McCallum, told the American Spectator's Kenneth Timmerman that security at Colorado's Rocky Flats nuclear weapons facility had been drastically reduced as part of former Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary's "openess initiative". (Providence-AP) -- Providence police say an 83-year-old man who shot a burglary suspect last night will not face criminal charges. The police investigative unit said Carlton Eddy Breitenstein was acting in self-defense when he gunned for an apparent intruder in his home. Police said they caught the suspect as he fled and took him to Rhode Island Hospital. The suspect, who police did not name, was in guarded condition and in police custody this morning. Detectives are investigating whether the intruder had assaulted Breitsenstein and might be responsible for other break-ins. Police said the intruder will face criminal charges

One of the most bizarre bills making its way through Congress is the Visclosky steel quota bill (H.R. 975). It passed the House on March 17 (289 to 141) and is scheduled for a Senate vote today. If truth-in-labeling applied to legislation, H.R. 975 would be named the Steel Lottery Act of 1999. The annual cost to American households per steel job saved would exceed $800,000. But steel workers would receive less than 20 percent of this huge sum; lucky firms would collect more than 80 percent of the jackpot. H.R. 975 would augment an array of import relief ...

Law and OdorLaw and Odor       Government (itself) and proponents of governmentalism regularly proclaim that "America is a nation of laws, not of men. And thank God for that. That is what makes America great!"       A considerable amount of (and ongoing) reading of the words of the Founding Fathers has yet to turn up so much as a single instance of that sentiment having ever been expressed by any of them (either in their personal writings or in their "official" - formal - proclamations). Or, for that matter, by any of the various social philosophers ...

FINAL Page 003 (Copyright Newark Morning Ledger Co., 1999) The esteemed Rutgers University anthropologist Lionel Tiger has done a lot of groundbreaking work in his field. It was he, for example, who first observed and named the phenomenon that has come to be known as "male bonding." But he was also involved in a groundbreaking event in another field, the TV talk show. Through no fault of his own, he sparked what may have been the first major on-camera riot. The phenomenon would later be perfected by ...

Back in the 1950s, the Republican Party was very dumb indeed. It was mostly isolationist, opposed to civil rights and civil liberties, still fighting Social Security, in thrall to the demagogue Joseph McCarthy and xenophobic to boot. In time, the party changed and -- a bit troubling to me -- I found myself more and more in agreement with it. Now, though, I have very good news indeed. The Good Ol' Days are back. The GOP is again as dumb as a post. I say "good news" because nothing cheers a columnist like really stupid politicians. They are like rain ...

    Daily Telegraph | June 22, 1999 | Michael Fleet
MORE than 400 people stormed Stonehenge at dawn yesterday as the summer solstice was greeted by battles with riot police. About a dozen travellers climbed the stones while Druids and other worshippers who had permission to enter the site were kept from their planned celebration of the solstice. Police, English Heritage and Druids' representatives were scathing of the crowd who "hijacked" a ceremony that took months to plan. Some of those involved in the disturbances were at the City of London riot on Friday, and an Internet website had encouraged people to try to reach the stones. Bricks and ...

Exercise daily, eat wisely, die anyway By Anne Fennell Well, it’s official. The Big Five Food Bullies have spoken and the Unitary Dietary Guidelines are in place. The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Dietetic Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institutes of Health don’t have any surprises up their sleeves. They also don’t have a clue about how people eat. Or even why they eat. For the record, here’s the lowdown: No more than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat No more than 30 percent of total calories from all types of fat 55 percent ...

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia - President Clinton on Monday lauded Slovenia as an example of what a democratic Balkans could become and urged Serbia to follow Slovenia's lead and "reject the murderous rule" of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. In the capital of the first Yugoslav republic to break with Milosevic, Clinton called on "all the people of every part of Europe" to choose democracy and respect for human rights over the politics of ethnic hatred. "We want Serbia to be a part of the new Europe," Clinton said. "But Serbia must reject the murderous rule of Mr. Milosevic and choose the ...

RZE, Yugoslavia -- The 22-year-old woman, married four months ago, said she was taken from this small southern village by Serbian forces, held for a day in the local police station, beaten, then threatened with death. But she was not, she said, raped. Her husband, Behan Thaqi, thinks differently. "I am 100 percent certain that they raped her," said Thaqi, 34, a farmer imprisoned by the Serbs for supplying weapons to the Kosovo Liberation Army, the Albanian guerrillas who fought Serbian forces. "I know that when women get in their hands, there is no chance to escape." Thaqi says his ...

(Brian Garrigan / ABCNEWS.com) EssayBy Heather Maher ABCNEWS.com June 22 — For the briefest while this past spring, America enjoyed the kind of national group hug that other countries, usually Scandinavian, seem to excel at in times of high crisis.      Aghast at Columbine, the nation huddled, held town hall meetings and wrote letters to the editor, lamented a culture of violence, and resolved to ...

HOW DAVY CROCKETT LEARNED ABOUT LIMITED GOVERNMENT In 1884, Edward Ellis, the famous American frontiersman, war hero, and congressman from Tennesee, wrote a book The Life of Colonel David Crockett. In that book he relates how it was that Congressman Davy Crockett learned the vital importance of heeding the Constitution and the dangers of disregarding its restraints. One day the House of Representatives took up a bill to appropriate money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in support of the bill. Crockett arose just as the bill was about ...
