Thomas Sowell has written some very good books. Most notably "Migrations and Cultures" and "Conquest and Cultures." One of the many ground- breaking themes that run through these books is the figure of the half- educated ideological intellectual and the harm they have had on various third world societies. The pattern becomes all too familiar. A bright boy or girl learns how to read and is then taught about how their "people" have been oppressed by this or that group or class. This half educated student, full of resentment, then becomes the champion of the class, race, creed, or whatever ...

PHOENIX, June 16 - Responding to the comments this writer made in his speech at the June 15 WHTT luncheon meeting in Phoenix, and during the subsequent Q&A (see S99-109, Item 2, June 15), a TIM reader, a member of the Guards who had served with the U.S. troops in Bosnia and Macedonia, provided some additional information about the American casualties in NATO's war on Serbia which the Clinton administration has been covering up. He quoted a member of the U.S. Special Forces (SF) who had just returned from Yugoslavia after the first six weeks of the war, that over ...

Both G. Gordon and Ron Smith on Monday of this week read a statement that , if I recall correctly, had been published in a South Carolina newspaper as a letter to the editor. The author was Pat Conroy, popular author and an avowed liberal. In the letter, Conroy apologizes profusely for his past support of Sick Willie. He goes into detail about his own education at The Citadel and what it taught him about honor and duty. I am surprised that I cannot find the letter posted here on FreeRepublic. Has anyone else seen it? I'd appreciate any leads ...

Girl Died From Slash With a Fork, Jury is Told By Tim Bryant Of The Post-Dispatch A medical examiner testified Tuesday that 13-year-old Crystal Brooks of St. Louis died when someone slashed her throat with a kitchen fork. He said it appears that the murder weapon was a fork investigators found with the defendant, Martiez Davis, who is on trial for murder in St. Louis Circuit Court. Investigators believe Davis got the fork from a restaurant where he worked. Photos of Crystal's wounds brought one juror to tears Tuesday morning, so St. Louis Circuit Judge Henry Autrey halted the trial ...

There are some traditions and fixed lessons of history which require our faith, our will, and our determination to practice and never abandon if we hope to endure as a free people. One of these is MacArthur’s truism that “in war there can be no substitute for victory.” Or as Cardinal Spellman added, “only absolute victory is peace.” Certainly, it would be foolish to risk our boys lives and discharge our citizens fortunes for anything less than absolute victory. But strangely this sensible winning tradition continues its vacation from the minds of America’s new world order planners. Not that ...

I just saw a live report on the Bill O'Reilly Show by David Lee Miller (in Pristina, Kosovo) who was dodging bullets to make his report. He had this strange, apprehensive look on his face and was explaining to O'Reilly that just previous to his broadcast snipers (origin unknown)had been firing shots indiscrimately and luckily for him his cameraman did not have the lights on him so he wasn't a good target. David Lee Miller said that in Pristina the people both Serbs, KLA and Albanians were taking their anger out on the "American journalists" because they represent NATO.He said ...

"The Constitution will set out as a moderate aristocracy then degenerate into either a monarchy or tyrannical aristocracy. It will most probably vibrate some years between the two, and then terminate in the one or the other." -George Mason, 1787 Mason sought to keep the Union from swallowing the sovereign States, and thus he supported selection of Senators by the State Legislatures and vowed "he never would agree to abolish the State governments or render them absolutely insignificant." Oddly enough, in 1913, the 17th Amendment to the federal Constitution abolished election of national Senators by the State Legislatures. The entire ...

One of the biggest con jobs in American political history has been that which the Democratic Party has perpetrated on the American people. To justify the existence of the socialistic welfare state, along with the $1.7 trillion in taxation needed to fund it, Democrats proclaim, "We love the poor, the needy, and the disadvantaged." And whenever anyone opposes some Democratic social welfare program, he is immediately hit with the following accusation: "You're a racist, and you hate the poor." And now Republicans are jumping onto the "help the poor" bandwagon with what they are terming "compassionate conservatism." It's not yet ...

So: Now that Hillary has all but announced that she intends to run for the NYS Senate, and her most serious opponant, Rudy Giuliani, appears highly motivated to run against her, what has Rudy done to be sure we New Yorkers will prefer him at election time? He's declared that he wants to cut the speed limit within the five boroughs of New York City IN HALF, from it's current 30 miles per hour to 15 MPH! I wonder if he believes New Yorkers will be happy about this, or if he has decided to punish New Yorkers for ...

Can anyone imagine Abraham Lincoln suggesting during the campaign of 1860 that as President he would have no "litmus test" on slavery for his nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court? Of course not. It is unimaginable that Mr. Lincoln would have nominated someone who was pro-slavery, or whose views on that momentous issue were unknown to him. The Great Emancipator would have asked any potential nominee whether the infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision upholding slavery had been constitutionally decided. Abortion, like slavery in the last century, is the preeminent moral issue of our time. Does anyone suppose that the ...

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Middle-aged women who said their sex drives were stuck in park after they underwent hysterectomies found that a testosterone-laced skin patch increased their libidos, according to a new study. Women naturally produce the male sex hormone, which controls sexual desire, but that stops when the ovaries are removed. ``About 43 percent of the 14 million women who have had hysterectomies reported sexual dysfunction after their surgeries — a decrease in sex drive, a decrease in sexual pleasure, an inability to have an orgasm and sometimes depression,'' said the study's primary author, Dr. Glenn Braunstein of ...

East Coast Conference on School-to-Work Richmond, Virginia August 28, 1998 STW vs. FTC: School-to-Work Versus Freedom-to-Choose The Competing Visions for Education By Robert Holland Enormous wealth and power are arrayed on the side of systematic School-to-Work -- this is a battle of David vs. Goliath -- but I have faith that good everyday people are going to help ensure that common sense and liberty ultimately triumph. But it's not going to be easy. The School-to-Work mentality is pervasive, and becoming more so as it spreads to one school system after another. You know the buzzwords (or if you don't you ...

ANOTHER HONOR FOR JANE FONDA: At its national convention in Washington, DC, next week, the American Association of University Women will bestow its new Speaking Out for Justice Award on the famous actress and aerobics queen. She is being hailed, the AAUW says, as "a committed activist who champions the environment, human rights, and the empowerment of women and girls." To judge from the AAUW's two-page biography of its honoree, Fonda has also championed anti-gang efforts in California, rural villagers in Tanzania, student theatrical work in Georgia, and open-space preservation in Montana. The bio mentions the Oscar she won ...

Two Forms of ID and your fingerprint. vanity Dose anyone find it alarming that banks are now requiring non-deposit account holders to submit a fingerprint in order to cash a check? It seems like two forms of ID are not enough. I tried searching on the net for information about this and only came up with a website that sells the equipment. I can not believe that there is no outrage on what seems to be yet another Orwellian encroachment of our liberty. I mean, even if you have two forms of ID, a bank will REFUSE to pay on ...
