LUKE, Chapter 1
1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

GILLIAM VAN DER GOUWEN, 1728
“Gabriel Appears to Zacharias”
Thanks, Dan.
Ah, yes, #15. The look on Zach’s face is priceless. Gilliam captured the moment very well.
I like Gilliam van der Gouwen’s take. I sure as heck would look startled!
It’s crystal clear from the text and the context that Zechariah was alone with the Angel, who all those other people so many artists added? (The local PTB? Other Biblical figures out of time and space? Or?)
In retrospect, had the subject occurred to me, I should have expected it, human nature being what it is: fallible, malicious, self-serving....
Good Morning!
Once again, Tissot SHINES! :-)
...and that's just the nice humans!
He is irrepressible. And he is in on every upcoming event.
From stained glass windows to sculptures to paintings to prints..great display of art!
Many favorites but worth of note is #1 by Jacopo della Quercia, contemporary of Donatello. It is one of the panels of the Baptismal Font of the Baptistery of Siena, each panel sculpted by a different artist. It is of gilded bronze, magnificent in details and composition.
#24 from the remarkable frescoes in the Tornabuoni Chapel in Florence. Ghirlandaio at his very best. It is also an important historical document as it depicts the fashion and the figures of notables of that Florentine time.
#40 is a limestone relief, so beautiful. Many thanks.
Indeed! :-)
“...he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born”
I have just loved this part for so many years now, it truly brings me joy to know.
And indeed he was, as we know from The Visitation, John the Baptist knew the unborn Jesus Christ, both in their mother’s wombs:
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
but lifted up the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy,
according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
"...windows to sculptures to paintings to prints...." Sometimes I group them by type, and other times they're random, as today--although it begins and ends with reliefs.
The difference between Christians and all others is that we admit our sin and trust in Jesus to pay for and remove it.
How joyous, too, for Mary, that Elizabeth provided that (much-needed, I expect) second confirmation of Gabriel’s announcement. For Mary’s third confirmation, the text implies, she hung around to see that Elizabeth’s child was both alive and male. And, of course, her fourth was Joseph’s dream. God overwhelmed her with confirmations! (Not to mention the fifth, the unexpected journey to Bethlehem to fulfill prophecy.)
If we take the case of the Ghirlandaio painting, contrary to what the artist might have had in mind, the owner of the Tornabuoni Chapel told him to include the Florentine nobles. Politics played a part in the project and execution of a painting, commissioned by the Church and aristocracy. They held the purse.
Had I known that, I’d have faced a dilemma: whether to include a masterful painting with an obvious defect. Routinely, I reject works which include extraneous figures: “The Holy Family with Donors (or Saint Anthony).”
Including it provides insight to the politics of the day. I think that’s important.
I don’t, respectfully. I’m here only to provide insight into God’s Word. Ultimately, nothing else has any importance at all.
Wow, thanks for the links. I plan on checking out the ones I missed.
