Americans are divided over the “No Kings” protests, which were held across the country on Saturday, according to new polling.
The demonstrations — which coincided with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary parade in Washington, D.C. — were a response to what organizers called the president’s authoritarian actions.
About 2,100 individual protests were held, which, in total, were attended by around 5 million people, according to an estimate from the American Civil Liberties Union, which helped organize the demonstrations.
“Today’s protests are a resounding message that people across the nation will not be intimidated by President Trump’s fear tactics,” Deirdre Schifeling, ACLU’s chief political & advocacy officer, said in a statement. “Americans are brave, democracy-loving people and will not sit idly by as the Trump administration feeds our Constitution into the shredder.”
The White House, meanwhile, went on the offensive, criticizing the mass gatherings.
“The so-called No Kings protests have been a complete and utter failure with minuscule attendance,” Steven Cheung, the White House director of communications, wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It is sad Democrats and liberals would rather support criminals and illegals instead of celebrating the 250th anniversary of our great U.S. Army and Flag Day.”
What the YouGov poll found
A plurality of respondents, 49%, said they either strongly approve (38%) or somewhat approve (11%) of the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, 35% said they either strongly disapprove (26%) or somewhat disapprove (9%). Sixteen percent said they were not sure.
Unsurprisingly, the results largely broke along partisan lines, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
The vast majority of Democrats, 80%, said they strongly or somewhat favor the “No Kings” demonstrations. In contrast, more than two-thirds of Republicans, 68%, said they strongly or somewhat opposed the protests.
Independents fell somewhere in the middle, with 47% in favor and 31% opposed.
The survey comes three days after a similar YouGov poll, which asked the same question ahead of the “No Kings” protests.
In the earlier poll, 45% of respondents said they approved of the planned demonstrations, while 37% said they opposed them — indicating support ticked up slightly over time.
How’s this for a coincidence? The King of England’s Birthday was celebrated last Saturday, too! (His actual birthday is in November, but the King’s birthday is celebrated on a Saturday in June by long-standing custom so that the weather is decent.
77 million vs 5 million.....envision that...
The King had to be watching the news going “hey what did I ever do to those people?”
Those *protests* are protesting against democrats and leftists fantasies.
We have no king. Trump never named himself one.
No Trump supporter ever said they wanted him to become one.
Their whole protest was based on some delusion about reality they have. The claim about Trump being a king is totally fabricated. It’s protesting against a nonexistent issue.
Nothing but a teachers union rally that wants to take on Trumps presidency by any means possible. Mostly middle aged white school teachers off for the summer and retired school teachers, all rounded up and bussed in using your tax dollars. In Memphis they held it at a strip mall largely unoccupied with buildings that could obscure the fourteen busses from public view. Pretty stupid holding a “spontaneous home grown” political protest with 400 middle aged angry white women in a mostly black city. Even the loyal media had a hard time covering it.
A yougov poll is about as reliable as a magic 8-ball.
Pennlive is a rat op like the rest of them.
‘No Kings’ protests just more flat earth & moon cheese people.
How heavy did they oversample Dims. It was the lamest protest ever.
The protest was too vague and lacked any real meaning.
They gave me an idea to have No Queens Either protests at drag queen story hours.
EC
They couldn’t call it “No Queens” , LOL
OVER 300 MILLION IN USA.
5 MILLION PROTESTED “NO KINGS”
Less than 2 %
NOT IMPRESSED
I was in NYC on protest day...not far from one of the advertised locations...saw a smattering of NYPD around and only saw two “protestors” (young ladies) who bellied up to a bar for lunchtime drinks and food (I guess the struggle makes one thirsty and hungry). Only reason I knew they were part of the protest is they had a sign (obviously created for them) which they hid while in the pub, and one was wearing a shirt in support of abortion. I know NYC is a big place and I likely didn’t see all the activity, but it was very limited from my perspective, for what its worth.
The good news is that these childless cat ladies will not reproduce. The bad news is that they will still be around for the next few decades.
And that’s if you really believe 5 million...I think we’re being gaslit...again.
The thing was a stupid response to losing the election. It is this year’s pink P-hat stroll.
Speaking of protest. What to think of the military parade when the soldiers did the FU shuffle? I find that the most disturbing. Undermines confidence
