City of Sandusky makes Election Day paid holiday, eliminates Columbus Day

SANDUSKY, Ohio - The city of Sandusky will no longer recognize Columbus Day as an official holiday.

Instead of having the day as a paid holiday, city workers will have off on Election Day.

City officials said they decided to make the switch for two reasons. It prioritizes voting. The move also recognizes Columbus Day’s controversial origins.

“What better way to celebrate the value of our employees and citizens than by removing barriers for them to participate in the greatest of American innovations, our democracy,” the city said on Facebook.

I wonder if they realize that “dusky” means dark-skinned?

My prediction: It will cause a DECREASE in voting on election day. It’ll also lead to lots of people calling in sick or taking a vacation day the Monday before. Early November!! What a wonderful time for a four-day weekend and to shop for Thanksgiving/holidays/winter.

I worked the polls that day. We assumed we’d be real crowded around lunch. Nope. People took extra time at lunch “to vote”, did other stuff, and voted real early or after work.

But what about "Indigenous Peoples' Day"? Liberal cities can't make Columbus Day both that and this.

(Not that lowly city councils can really even overturn a federal holiday to begin with.)

Uh, all youse know that Columbus Day is an Italian holiday, right? Cuz’ Chris Columbus was an Italian.

So now they’re takin’ away OUR holiday!? That don’t fly right with the Italian community. So me and Vito and the other goombahs are gonna pay a little social call on the mayor of Sandusky right there in his office, and yeah, we’re gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.

We don’t think Hizzoner ever had his gums massaged with a tire iron before, do you, paisan? Not to the tune of the Godfather theme, anyway. Right in the old pastafazool!

I want to see them fight over making Columbus Day Meme Holiday A (Indigenous Peoples' Day) vs. Meme Holiday B (Election Day).

Actually, a good thing. Now people that have jobs will be more likely to go vote Republican!

“”Veteran’s Day on Nov 11 and Thanksgiving on Nov 28””

Thanksgiving is not always on 11/28.

It would have been fine 10 years ago bc people would get hammered and then forget to vote.

Instead, today we've got to BAN BALLOT HARVESTING, because this part -- the holiday -- is meant to aid Election Day ballot harvesting.

We need to march!

Take the canoli if you don’t want to ride in the trunk. Seriously though, Columbus was one of the most visionary, courageous and determined explorers of all time. Yes, there were incidents of native abuses but oft times that went both ways. I recall Cook rode in to object to his ship getting ripped off and got killed for his trouble.

Leave Columbus day alone or visit Jersey one way, capiche?

I live in South Carolina and in 1992 our city dedicated a statue to Cristoforo Colombo on the 500th anniversary of his landing. The ceremony was picketed by “activists” from our local black college for its “insensitivity to first arriving peoples”. They wore black waiter uniforms & black sneakers with red laces.

Police ran them off & told them to get a life. So when is Columbus OH going to change its name?

Way back in 1992? Just wow they are ever out there looking to be offended by the slightest or made up thing. The “Social Justice Warriors” before the term was coined. Bastards tried to trap and hurt me more than once at conservative rallies. They are the Hitler Brownshirts of our time.

The Left’s not about ideology any more. It’s about power and dominating others.

Marxism-Leninism was once summed up in Russian: “Kto-kogo” (pronounced k-tah k’vah). Means who-whom or who rules over whom.

It’s not about anything else.
