As nobody else seems to celebrate Columbus Day, we might as well. So herewith some authentic Columbian music. This essay is adapted from my book A Song For The Season: For a 15th century Italian explorer long out of favor with America's cultural elite, Christopher Columbus sure has a hammerlock on the standard repertoire. Cole Porter put him in the verse to a famous song: As Dorothy Parker once said to her boyfriend 'Fare thee well' As Columbus announced When he knew he was bounced 'It was swell, Isabelle, swell...' In those days (1935) Dorothy Parker was famous for leaving...

Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott said he would sign a bill that would abolish Columbus Day and replace it with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” The bill to dump the traditional holiday passed through the state legislature in Montpelier on Wednesday and is now on the governor’s desk waiting for a signature, the Burlington Free Press reported. “I see no reason that I would not sign it,” Scott told the media, “but we’re reviewing the bill as we speak.” “I know it’s controversial from many standpoints, from many people, but you know, it’s just a day, and we’ll get through it,” Scott...

SANDUSKY, Ohio - The city of Sandusky will no longer recognize Columbus Day as an official holiday. Instead of having the day as a paid holiday, city workers will have off on Election Day. City officials said they decided to make the switch for two reasons. It prioritizes voting. The move also recognizes Columbus Day’s controversial origins. “What better way to celebrate the value of our employees and citizens than by removing barriers for them to participate in the greatest of American innovations, our democracy,” the city said on Facebook.

**SNIP** The post office will be closed so there will be no mail delivery Monday for the holiday. Those looking to send mail also won’t be able to, so anyone looking to mail something should be sure to get to the post office Saturday before it closes, their next chance will be Tuesday. The Department of Motor Vehicles offices in most states will be closed for the holiday as well. Some offices even closed early on the Friday ahead of Columbus Day. Schools aren’t required to close for the holiday, so those wondering whether they should head to the bus...

Just a couple of last thoughts on the Left’s attempt to deep-six Columbus Day because he was a white imperialist pig whose sole intent in taking to the high seas was to find some poor indigenous peoples to oppress. Because that’s just what white guys do.As I mentioned yesterday, the Salt Lake City Council unanimously decided to join the trendy observance of Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October, the same day as Columbus Day. Don’t worry, it won’t replace Columbus Day, which is a federal holiday, although they would if they could. Instead it will be...

The Los Angeles City Council voted 14-1 on Wednesday to officially mark the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day on the city’s calendar — a day to commemorate “indigenous, aboriginal and native people.” The day will remain a paid holiday for city employees, the Los Angeles Times reported. The vote followed a contentious hearing, during which some Italian-Americans said the switch would eradicate a key portion of their history, while others argued that city lawmakers needed to “dismantle a state-sponsored celebration of genocide indigenous peoples” and dismissed the idea of celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day on a different date...
  • Greenfield: The End of Columbus Day is the End of America

Monday, October 10, 2016 The End of Columbus Day is the End of America Posted by Daniel Greenfield Columbus may have outfoxed the Spanish court and his rivals, but he is falling victim to the court of political correctness. The explorer who discovered America has become controversial because the very idea of America has become controversial. There are counter-historical claims put forward by Muslim and Chinese scholars claiming that they discovered America first. And there are mobs of fake indigenous activists on every campus to whom the old Italian is as much of a villain as the bearded Uncle Sam....
