Barack and Michelle Obama, speaking to People Magazine, of all disappointments, shared the disheartening news that they have experienced what they called racism. Barack, for example, apparently has had trouble, before he was president, hailing a cab in Chicago, to which an immediate thought might occur to anyone who has been to Chicago: Who hasn't?

Also, Barack, at a black-tie event, when he, too, was in festive livery, apparently was asked by another guest if he would get them a cup of coffee.

For her recollection, Michelle came up with a visit to a Target store as first lady. She said she was asked by another shopper to get something off a shelf.

The Obamas seemed to have conjured up stereotypes from about 1922. They are intimating that, because they are black, they were deemed to be subservient. I imagine the readers of People Magazine are supposed to hear the word "fetch" when Obama was asked to get somebody a cup of coffee.

How this is supposed to help heal racial enmity is beyond my comprehension.

I've worn a red polo in a target and been asked for help. it happens I think and is no big deal.

In Mrs. Obama’s case a short older woman asked a tall Mrs. Obama for help reaching for a high object. I did not realize asking was racism, I though helping others was Christian or even just human.

When I visit a store in my work clothes (I wear shirt and tie), I'm constantly asked by other shoppers to get something off a shelf or tell them what aisle this or that is located in.

That's because they think I work there because I'm the only one in the store (other than the workers) who is not dressed like a slob.

If it's taking something off a shelf, I'm usually pretty helpful as it's usually a short old lady who just can't reach. But if they are asking me what section to find the canned sardines, I will often have fun with that. I'll tell them confidently that they can find those in aisle 12, three shelves from the bottom, just between the canned peaches and the Hamburger Helper.

At a restaurant one time, a diner thought I was on the waitstaff and flagged me down as I was passing by to get refills on their drinks and I cheerfully told them I'd be right back with them. I then went to the waiter and pointed the woman out to him and noted it was her birthday today. Within 5 minutes, the entire waitstaff gathered around her to sing Happy Birthday.

Instead of being offended, have some fun! Life is way too short.

Me too. I dress pretty casual at my office. Sometimes during lunch I go to Target, Staples or a supermarket. I usually walk into these stores swinging my keys on a chain around my forefinger.

Folks on numerous occasions have mistaken me for an employee (maybe a floor manager) of those stores.

There's no way in hell the secret service would have any "civilians" in that store, let alone wander up the moose's aisle. Even the manager was probably booted. Same thing happened at Disney world before. The whole park was shut down and cleared out.

Rule #12 from Saul Alinsky's, "Rules for Radicals" which he devotes to Lucifer:

* RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)

Going after the current establishment to show racism is endemic to every fiber...
