Bobby Jindal: Birth control should be over the counter
Washington Examiner ^ | 12/14/2012 | Coronal

Posted on 12/14/2012 1:59:00 PM PST by Coronal

Bobby Jindal wants you to be able to get your contraceptives over the counter, and that’s just the first step. “Democrats have wrongly accused Republicans of being against birth control and against allowing people to use it,” the Louisiana governor writes in the Wall Street Journal today. “That’s hogwash.”

Won’t speak to the safety of the drug as OTC.

From a funding perspective it makes perfect sense. OTC drugs aren’t usually covered by insurance and thus it would be an individuals decision and no one who morally objects would have to pay for it.

Last time I looked, you COULD get contraceptives over the counter.

And the best contraceptive is free. Don't even need to go the drug store for it.

I’m surprised that Jindal would say this given that he is Catholic.

I have to agree with Bobby on this one. Adverse effects are few and far between.

Are you talking about the proverbial aspirin between the knees?

Some types of birth control pills are abortificients.

And most of them are dangerous. The statistics are have long been known, but of course the media and the medical associations refuse to report them, since that would be politically incorrect.

Not a good idea to start spreading them around any more than they already are.

Jindal is NOT talking about abortion pills.

The problem is birth control drugs are big medicine, with lots of possible side effect and interactions. They’re actually exactly the kind of drug that should be prescription only. Yeah it would end a political football, but at a huge human cost.

Every Christian, except for truly faithful Catholics, has it wrong on The Pill.
It sometimes acts as an abortifacient, ie abortion-murder.
And now Jindal has revealed himself to be something other than what he professes
to be. He loses my support.

Close, but aspirin is not free.

I’m talking about abstinence. It works every time it’s tried. No unplanned pregnancies, no STD’s, no problem.

RE: I’m surprised that Jindal would say this given that he is Catholic.

Well, for one, there are more non-catholics than Catholics in this country. He is indirectly saying Catholics won’t use the power of government to force people to conform to their own belief ( unlike one President I know ).

Have to agree with Jindal here. This is a pretty obvious limited government federalist solution that would have completely destroyed the democrat argument.

Knee jerk remarks like that do no good to “faithful Catholics”.

There ARE other medicinal benefits to the Pill, ya know.

I think Cicero was referring to Birth Control Pills...which are not exactly 100% safe...and their use can lead to other health problems later in life.

They should not be given over-the-counter. And, I doubt if a BCP maker would want to risk liability by having BCP OTC.

And, the prupose of many BCPs is to prevent a fertilized egg from remaining in the womb...in general terms. I am sure that part troubles some people

Yes, many birth control pills in fact do not prevent conception. They merely prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. That is why the Catholic Church is against birth control pills.

Are you accepting that The Pill can sometimes act as an abortifacient? If you could answer that question first, let’s go to the next point, if you don’t object.
